Fifth Years: Lesson 2

Professor Killian Borisyuk was pretty good at knowing about the houses and the founders now that he had some time to teach and to experience it himself. It seemed like basic knowledge, but it was stuff that would be found in the OWL regardless. The two houses that Killian was going over today - he knew that he belonged in neither of them. After all, he bore no qualities of either. His girlfriend, on the other hand, was possible. But, it was hard to see unless he had seen her sorted himself. Maybe he could take the hat and stick it on her head to see which house. But the likelihood that he would be allowed to do that would be very slim to none. Killian was behind his desk with his hands clasped together on the wooden top, waiting for the fifth years to arrive. He cleared his throat to gain the attention of the fifth years once they had entered and settled. He motioned toward the door and it closed. "Notes out if you want to take them. If not, then it is on you because this will be on your OWLs."

It was like Killian to get straight to the point. "I will be going over two founders this week. Godric Gryffindor and Helga Hufflepuff. So, let's start with Gryffindor. According to the history books, we actually know where Godric used to live, which was called 'wild moor', or to be more specific, in the West Country that is now known as Godric's Hollow. Gryffindor was an accomplished dueler during his life, and fought against muggle discrimination. His views were much more reasonable with the right of all that possessed magical abilities to attend Hogwarts. As some of you may know already, this created a power struggle among the four founders, and a set of dominoes were knocked over, which I will go over next lesson." Killian did not hide the fact that he disliked the founder that Gryffindor collided with. He was sure that he would need to hold his tongue as he spoke about Slytherin, but even he had a hard time controlling his mouth.

Killian leaned back in his chair and folded his arms across his chest. "Gryffindor used to own the Sorting Hat, the very one that we see every year, as well as a sword that was goblin made decorated with rubies. The colors of Gryffindor are red and gold with the emblem of a lion, which many believe stand for bravery. I suppose that would be accurate because you'd have to be brave or foolish to go near one of those cats but I digress. Much like the Scotland counterpart, we also have house ghosts. While Nearly Headless Nick serves as the Gryffindor ghost for Scotland, we have Lady Helena the Brave. She looks like she is in her 20s and is a noble of some sort. If you want to know more about her and her history, you will likely find her roaming the castle."

Killian let the students that were taking notes to catch up before he moved on to the next founder. "So, the next one is Helga Hufflepuff. Hufflepuff, as you know, is represented by yellow and black, as well as a badger." Yet another animal that didn't match the values or seemed misleading. "Hufflepuff is known to be a caring woman, as it is reflected in the traits of kindness and willingness to work hard that are involved in her students. Although, I think this is misleading with her animal symbol because if anyone came across a badger, they are highly aggressive. Whether or not this is a hidden trait of Hufflepuffs, I am not sure since I never knew them personally." He went to Durmstrang so he truly didn't know any of the houses and their traits until he came here to teach.

"It is said that Hufflepuff came from 'valley abroad', which likely means Wales. She was also famous for her ability to charm food. Many of her recipes are used to this day in the kitchens that you eat every day. Hufflepuff was also kind enough to harbor house elves at Hogwarts, giving them a much better lifestyle than most have. This must have been unheard of back in her days. Hufflepuff and Ravenclaw were also written down to be great friends. So, if you are a Hufflepuff with a best friend in Ravenclaw and vice versa, congratulations, you are repeating the past. Now, the Scotland school has a Hufflepuff ghost named 'Fat Friar'. Now, this school has a Hufflepuff ghost named Evan Faire. From what I know, he has a large heart, looks thin and meek. If you meet a ghost that resembles him, then that is our Hufflepuff House Ghost." Killian gave a small shrug of his shoulders. He snapped toward the door where it opened, signaling the end of the lecture. "Next time, we will be going over Ravenclaw and Slytherin, so get ready for another lengthy lecture. Homework is on the board. Class dismissed." He pulled out his wand and tapped the blackboard, where a piece of chalk wrote their assignments. Killian would be giving similar homework for both lessons but whatever. Students might want the higher grades, who knows.
Assignment: RP the lesson.
Extra credit: If you are in Gryffindor/Hufflepuff, then write a small essay if you think the hat made the right choice. If you are not, then you can write about either a person you know, or if you think you should have been in Gryffindor/Hufflepuff and why. Worth 5 EC points.

Callie walked into the history of magic classroom and took her usual spot in the room. She was rather curious to learn about the founders, it just was something that she had always thought would be cool to learn about. Something that was interesting and did actually have a somewhat impact on her. Or had had. She was beyond her sorting now obviously. But it didn’t stop her being interested in what the founders were. She took her quill and notes and was a little pretty pleased that they’d be covering gryffindor and hufflepuff her house and the house she thought if not for Hufflepuff she might’ve ended up in. Callie took notes from what the professor was saying, there was more to gryffindor, but she was much more interested - for obvious reasons -with hufflepuff. Eventually the lesson was wrapped up and she took a note of the homework before heading out of the room.

Enoch walked into the history of magic classroom and took his spot in the room. The founders he was sure would be interesting enough, or should be interesting enough but he also really doubted that it would be. Especially as the professor told them which they were covering first. He had his notes in front of him and his quill in hand and was writing down what the professor was saying. Bits and pieces though not a whole lot, sinc ehe didn’t really need to know that much about these other founders. He only cared a little more about the founder of his house and really not that much more. Eventually the lesson was wrapped up and Enoch headed out of the class at the very least he didn’t have any homework.

Teddy was still getting used to the lectures being delivered by someone who wasn't Professor Moncrieffe and their very different styles of teaching history. He listened to Professor Borisyuk talk about the Hogwarts founders and a lot of it Teddy knew already from being at school for the last four and a half years. He took some notes but hoped for a bit more of a challenge next week. At the end of the lesson he packed up and left the classroom.

Yes the sorting hat made the right choice putting me in Gryffindor, I'm brave, loyal and pretty great, just like Godric himself.

The semester had started without too much drama- which was perfectly fine with her, Elodie liked to keep to herself and she liked the peace. She was vaguely aware of some drama around the castle, but she did her best to keep out of it. If anyone wanted her company, they were welcome to it, but she didn't think herself so important as to try and force herself on anyone else.

Content with how her day was going, Elodie walked to class with a slight spring to her step. She took her place, turning her attention to the Professor. The man still fascinated her, and she was glad to have the lecture as an excuse to watch him. She kept notes, of course, doing her best to pay attention. Part of her wanted his approval, while another part was certain she was no more than a blip on his existence. But that was fine- she was much better as an observer, she'd have no idea what to do if the Professor - or anyone, for that matter, noticed her.

Before she knew it class had ended. She wrapped up her notes and grabbed her things, hurrying out before she could be accused of lingering too long.

Dominic's first week had gone quite smoothly and he was happy with all of the classes that he was taking. Some of it was boring, but the hufflepuff just tried his best to stay positive that he would get through it all. After all, he had the support of his professors if he really needed the help and so he didn't see any reason to stress about it, even though he was in his OWL year and his grades at the end of the year may determine where he’d be after he graduated school. But it was all going to be okay - Dominic just had to stay positive. He headed to his classes feeling a little tense.

Dominic entered the History of Magic classroom and took a seat amongst his classmates. The professor was lecturing them about two finders - Godric Gryffindor and Helga Hufflepuff. Helga was perhaps one of the best people in history, because she accepted anyone no matter who they were. He was proud to be part of her house, and it just made him love his house even more. Soon enough, the lesson came to an end and Dominic left with a whole lot of notes to remember for the exam at the end of the year.

The werewolf was having one interesting term already. Dante Styx had more relatives now, and his immediate family was not completely pure. He did hope that it meant that he was off the hook, though he had a feeling that since his mother favored him so much, it would not be the case. He wondered what he did to deserve to be favored as much. Dante was a hyper boy, and always into trouble. He shook his head, as he walked out of the dungeons, ready for his next lesson.

Dante walked in the History of Magic classroom and sat down in his seat. Professor Borisyuk started the lesson with two of the founders. Gryffindor, who had a lot more said about him than he thought was necessary, then Hufflepuff. Slytherin and Ravencaw must be later. He did think that the house ghosts here at the castle sounded cool. He had yet to see one except one ghost. The Rider since he did not tell his name to anyone. Dante thought that was weird. He heard the dismissal, and the homework. He got up and left the classroom to see if he could think of anything to write. It was hard to think about Hufflepuff when his ex was in there.

Marley quickly made her way to her history of magic classroom. She quickly took her usual spot and took out the things she needed for the lesson. The Hufflepuff wondered what they'd be learning today. History was one of her favourite subjects, and she was getting used to being taught by a different professor. Marley moved her attention towards the professor as the professor started off with the lesson. It seemed they were learning about the founders of Hogwarts, which Marley didn't seem to mind. She made sure to make as many notes as she possibly could. She also nodded her head along from time to time throughout the lesson to show the professor that she was understanding the content that was being given.

It wasn't long before the lesson had come to an end and they were dismissed. Marley made sure to make note of the homework that was given, as she didn't want to forget. The Hufflepuff quickly packed up her things as well as tidied up her area. She says a quick and appreciative thanks and goodbye to the professor before heading out of the classroom with her friends and the rest of her classmates.

Yes, I believe the sorting hat did infact place me in the correct house, which is Hufflepuff. I believe I do hold the traits that Hufflepuff stands for. Which is hardworking, loyal, kind and friendly!

Millie headed into the History of Magic classroom and sat in the front with her textbook in front of her. As the professor lectured, she made notes on the two houses they were going over today, Gryffindor and Hufflepuff. She measured Veronica up against the traits and nodded - she was pretty sure it was the only house for her sister. She agreed about the house animals, since badgers actually were quite vicious and she didn’t think they really fit the motif that Hufflepuffs usually embodied. Not that she fully agreed with that, since Geo was fierce and she had been a Hufflepuff too. When the class ended she made notes on the homework and then stuffed them into her bag as she left.

Veronica stiffled a yawn on her way into Professor Borisyuk’s classroom, it was most likely premptive because she knew they were in for a boring lecture. The professor had pretty much told them as such, the whole semester for history would be boring and lecture heavy and she wasn’t sure any of it was even relevant to them. They were learning about the history of a school in another country, yes it had influenced their own but really not that much. The castle was different, as was the history, the only thing they shared was the name of the houses. Why did any of it matter. She did take notes, reluctantly, because she refused to fail her O.W.Ls, she’d never live it down at home. She listened to the lecture and took notes, and when it was finally over she packed up and left.
