Name Etymology
Eluned is a Welsh name meaning 'Idol'. Eluned was named after a famous Welsh witch from the 18th century, known for her charity work aimed at supporting those suffering the long-lasting effects of dark curses. Anne, meaning 'Grace', was her mother's middle name.
Nicknames
Ned, Loony, Loonhead, Lou, Ellie. She prefers 'Ned' over 'Ellie'. Her name is often mispronounced 'A-loon-ed', hence the Loonhead nickname, which she doesn't mind - in fact, she finds it quite funny.

| "Who? I don't know. Maybe," said Eluned, who had forgotten all about the girl in the petting zoo. Presently, she was preoccupied straining to see over the shoulder of the boy in front. What she needed was a little fold-up step stool - or a piggy-back. She was about to ask Ten if she could hop on when the headmaster called the redhead's name. Ned reached after her back dramatically, as if Ten were embarking on an adventure from which she might never return. "Goodbye! I love you!" Over the last few months, Ned had thought long and hard about what she'd do if she was separated from Ten. She wasn't above grovelling on her hands and knees, but Mervyn said it only made so much difference; the hat saw deep into your soul, saw all the little bits of you that you stuffed behind your mind's furniture and tried to forget about, and it was never wrong. Still, Ned hoped her soul was the same colour as Ten's. There was nowhere else she wanted to be. "Strangewayes, Eluned." Ned puffed out her cheeks and strode up to the stool. Confidence. Believe it'll happen, and it will. Granted, this attitude didn't usually help her, and often resulted in injury, but it was all she had. | Eluned was born in Rhymney Valley, Wales, near the picturesque village of Llanbradach. But the first few years of her life were anything but picturesque. The Strangewayes family operates under a peculiar set of rules - rules which make it difficult to lead a healthy life and even harder to leave. These rules predestined Eluned to spend the rest of her life in the Strangewayes Manor, a perplexing old house rumoured to eventually drive its inhabitants mad. Little Ned was happy enough, thanks to her mother's love and the house's endless curiosities, but she would soon feel the ache of tethered wings. One night, her mother made a heart-breaking decision: exploiting a loophole, she took Eluned to New Zealand and left her in the care of her eldest son, Mervyn. |

| 2052-2055 (aged 4-7) Eluned adapted quickly to her new family and freedom, and soon she had all but forgotten her years in the Strangewayes Manor. Now she lived in a small house on the edge of Obsidian Harbour with her brother Mervyn and his best friend Leda. As the local daycare centre had not yet opened, Ned spent a lot of time at the Hog's Head, where Mervyn worked overtime to afford to look after her. She did not mind. People-watching provided her adequate entertainment until she was old enough to talk, and then she happily regaled customers with her made-up stories. They delighted in hearing them, and Ned's confidence bloomed. During the holidays, Leda's cousin Wendall often came to stay, and with his help and encouragement Ned turned her several stories into scripts, and her scripts into amateur films. The gory nature of these films raised a few eyebrows, but Mervyn never stifled her creativity. |

As soon as Ned was old enough to leave the house unsupervised, she was off. But she was not completely alone; just down the street lived Leda's niece, a red-haired girl by the name of Amortentia Layton-King. Amortentia, known to her friends and family as Ten, had an adventurous spirit to rival Eluned's, and together the pair intended to conquer the world - or at least Obsidian Harbour. The two were already friends, but embarking on adventures without their guardians strengthened their bond and made them inseparable. During these years, Mervyn married Leda Layton, and in an odd turn of events, Amortentia became Eluned's niece.
