Eric thought this had to be the record for the earliest detention in the school year. He would be impressed if it wasn't so annoying. He had to admit that it was a smart move for the headmaster to set the detention during the start of year feast, but it was annoying that he now also had to miss out on it. Felt a bit like he was in detention himself, which was a familiar feeling. Eric knew the headmaster had spoken to the two girls about the food fight last year and had informed them of their punishment, so it wasn't like Eric needed to lecture them or whatever. That was good, as he wasn't sure if he could bring himself to even pretend to care about a little food fight. Sure, it wasn't great. But no one got hurt and the kids had had fun. He understood that the headmaster couldn't let it escalate to the whole school, but it wasn't that big a deal either.

The detention would be held in an abandoned classroom where a bunch of old desks were stored. Desks that had been drawn and scribbled on over time. There was probably graffiti on some of these that was older than Eric was. At the very least, older than the girls in detention were. They were going to clean it up without using magic, and Eric had to supervise. He had grabbed himself a chair and had grabbed one of Minnie's books to read. She always liked it when he made an effort to enjoy the things she did, though he struggled to focus on reading for too long. As the girls came in, Eric nodded at them. "Alright. Here's the deal. The two of you will scrub stuff kids have drawn or written over the years off these desks and make them ready for use again. There's a bucket and some sponges and other stuff over there. When the time's up there'll be some sandwiches, since you're missing the feast. I'm here to supervise, that's all. Any questions?" He asked, glancing over at the desk. It suddenly occurred to him that it was pretty likely he had defaced at least one of these in his time. He'd written rude crap on a lot of desks over the years.

Callie, the teacher's pet, in detention. It wasn't her first time, but it was her first one at Hogwarts, and it stung all the more not just because she was missing the feast, but because she'd completely forgotten it was coming. The holidays had been hectic and the food fight seemed such a long time ago that it might as well have never happened. Alas, Professor Alcott-Ward hadn't forgotten, and now she was standing in the abandoned classroom with a bucket and a sponge. A sponge! The graffiti on the tables looked years old. Even with the other cleaning supplies, it was going to take a lot of elbow grease to remove it. "Are we allowed to talk?" she asked. That would make it all a bit more bearable, at least. Not that Callie regretted what she'd done. Ha! Teo's face had been totally worth it.

Despite everything Veronica had done during her time at Hogwarts, the trouble she had caused and the scenes she had made, she’d never found herself in detention. It wasn’t an exaggeration to say that she was protected from a lot of consequences, certainly in her last couple of years since her father became her head of house. Was it fair? No, and it hadn’t occurred to her until recently how that make some of her actions be perceived to others, she never meant to take advantage of her privileged position, she always expected her father to punish her, he just never did.

Veronica was a little surprised that she was being made to miss the feast, but she knew when she got involved in the food fight she knew there would be consequences, but she would take her punishment on the chin and move on. She felt like she had grown up a lot during the holidays and she wouldn’t do what she did at the feast now, but she still had to pay for her actions. Veronica listened to the caretaker as he explained how their detention would work, she wasn’t sure why they had to do a task that magic could accomplish in second, surely there was something more productive they could do? Veronica shook her head softly, she wouldn’t focus too much on what or why, she would just do what was asked of her.

The collection of old desks looked gross but Veronica was resigned to her fate, she didn’t listen to see what Eric said about being able to talk, she’d figure it out by if Calliope started talking to her or not. Veronica just grabbed a sponge and got to work.

Eric leaned back in his chair and grabbed his book, shrugging at the girl's question. "I don't care, go ahead." He told her. "It's just an hour of scrubbing, then you get some sandwiches and can head to bed." He opened his book. "Just don't talk sh- crap about the professors because I probably have to do something about that, and I don't feel like it." He told them. Then he paused. "I'll make an exception for Waldgrave." He muttered, only half joking.
