WEREWOLVES IN OUR WORLD
Ministry of Magic officials are trying to determine the identity of the person or creature that murdered a woman in her own home, where her body was left undiscovered for three days.
Olive Layton, mother of two and self-employed potioneer was found in the basement of her home in Marton, New Zealand in the early hours of the morning on 2nd October. Officials were only alerted to the investigation when her fiance found the woman, who once worked as a professor at Hogwarts New Zealand, and a full scale enquiry is now underway to unearth what exactly happened to the former potions mentor. The 30 year old local had many clients and many friends, according to sources, and while it was clear there had been foul play at hand, it seems there is more than meets the eye.
During an inspection of the basement, it was uncovered that this was not the work of standard charms or dark magic. There was distinct evidence that points directly to this being the result of Werewolf activity, and we advise that additional safety measures are taken from immediate effect, until the suspect can be contained. At this time it remains unclear to the motivates of such an attack, but all members of the wizarding community should remain vigilant and report anything suspicious to your nearest Auror or Law Enforcement Squad.
While it is uncommon for attacks like this to occur, it is not impossible. Wolfsbane potions are brewed especially for those who require its calming properties through the phase of a full moon, and when taken successfully, they are effective enough to control the inhibitions of a Werewolf. Werewolves are trained to manage their conditions, and there may be some living amongst us day to day without revealing their secret, even to their closest friends and family. Readers that are living with this are reminded to ensure that they are clear on their schedules, and that planning is key to the safety of their peers.
Today we are joined by Briar Rowan-Cullen. Former Leader of the Werewolf Support Services, Briar is an activist for Werewolf rights, a member of the Wizengamot, and is currently the Head of the Department for the Control and Regulation of Magical Creatures, and is a werewolf herself.
Hi Briar, thank you for joining us this afternoon, I know this will shock some of our readers to hear of an attack so close to home. How easy is it really to recognise a Werewolf that lives amongst us?
It is important to remember that a werewolf is no different to anyone else for the majority of the time, they are no more or less dangerous than any other human. It is only on the nights of the full moon where they transform into a wolf and have the potential to cause serious harm and injury even to those they hold dear to them. The main difference between a wolf and a werewolf is that they have a shorter snout tufted tail and human eyes. The main thing to remember is that true wolves are not native to New Zealand so if you see a wolf wandering around during a full moon, it is best to be cautious.
Do you think this Werewolf attacked because it was scared, or is something like this down to animal instinct?
Is there a difference? During a full moon every werewolf turns into a wolf-like creature. In their natural form they lose their minds completely following the instincts of the wolf. It is also an incredibly painful transformation. Any creature in pain is likely to be scared and their first instinct is to defend themselves. Werewolves are unable to recognise anyone and only respond to their own kind and would even attack their closest friend if they felt threatened. This is where the development of the wolfsbane potion changed the lives of many werewolves. It enabled them to keep their own mind during transformation. Let them control their actions and reduce a lot of the pain experienced.
Would you agree that Werewolves are predatory creatures?
Are you a predator Aaliyah? Aren't we all predators? We eat meat, we hunt the foxes that eat our chickens and the rabbits that eat our veggies, the flies and mosquitoes that annoy us. Your owl or cat is a predatory creature when it hunts for rats. For the majority of the time a werewolf is no more a predator than you or I, well you, I shouldn't really include myself in that group. They can be parents, hold respectable jobs and contribute to wizarding society just as much as everyone else. A werewolf who is under the benefit of wolfsbane is no more preditory than a human. If you forget to ignore all the predatory actions they take. If not under the benefit of wolfsbane this is a different story. A werewolf is more like a wild animal. A wild wolf that would hunt just like any other carnivore.
What should someone do if they are worried or concerned about a werewolf, either during a full moon phase or outside of this?
What do you mean “be concerned about a werewolf?” If you are concerned about a werewolf during a non full moon I would like to say thank you for being concerned about the welfare of some in society who are living everyday facing many forms of discrimination. The best thing you can do is support them like any other friend and accept that they may not feel well during certain times of the month. If you are really concerned about them you can contact werewolf support services at the ministry, this service is where to aid werewolves in need as well as family members. We can also answer any questions that you have about werewolves in general or interactions with them.
If someone is concerned that a werewolf is not fully prepared, what is the best way of approaching this?
If they have already transformed. There is precious little that you can do to help them without putting yourself at risk of attack. The best you can do is ensure that you keep yourself and anyone else you can safe and if possible reduce their mobility in a way that is not putting yourself at risk or causing distress to them. The best thing you can do is wait until the morning and make sure that they are okay, check them for any wounds that they may have sustained. Make sure they have something to wear as clothes don't handle transformations well, something to eat or drink if they want it and a place to rest.
Thank you very much Briar. If anyone wishes to talk more with Briar Rowan-Cullen, please do get in contact with the Ministry and we can put you in touch.
The investigation into the identity of the werewolf responsible for this attack continues.
