Lucas Soares was the kind of person that couldn't be pinned down to a single spot and this was getting worse when there was a plethora of places to explore. A week into his new school and home and he was still trying to get used to the long distances between different locations and the intricacy of the castle's interior. He had visited seemingly the most significant locations but he hadn't yet the chance to wander deeper into the castle's bowels. Most first years would be frightened of the thought of walking around the dungeons alone after the sunset but he was totally fine with it. So, he just waited for Gryffindor common room to empty out a bit in order to sneak out without being noticed.

Lucas knew it was after curfew but he wasn't tired yet and he was extremely bored. At the same time, he preferred exploring when the castle's corridors weren't crammed full. He was aware of the patrols but he had confidence in his small stature and his ability to move quickly and quietly. In the worst case scenario he had a couple of excuses in his defense but he hoped that he wouldn't have to use them tonight. It was the night of a new moon so there was no moonlight to shine through the tall windows. He had only to rely on the floor torches and his own feeble wand-lighting charm. The tiny orb of light wasn't lasting long and the boy had to cast many times the spell to make sure he was on the right track. At the same time he was listening closely for sounds that could mean trouble. He had to be ready to extinguish his wand's light in case someone had found him.

But so far so good. He had left behind him the first two floors without any unpleasant surprises. While he was tiptoeing down the last few steps before reaching the stairwell of the fifth floor, he felt a cold draft of air against the back of his neck. The light on his wand's tip flickered and fainted. His astonishment costed him his concentration. Seconds later, he conjured a new orb and light cast around him. Lucas turned around jittery, pointing his wand at the direction where he felt the draft swooping past him.
No other presence was witnessed at the stairs but he was certain he had felt something. The boy thought it could be a ghost. Even in that case, he had to keep moving. A ghost wouldn't side with him. Informing a professor about a first year's misdemeanor was a more plausible scenario.
Lucas took a few steps backwards on while making sure for the last time that no one was following him.
His heart literally tried to burst out of his chest when he bumped into something solid.

He turned around to cast light on one of those decorative armors that were everywhere as well as on that stairwell. Their collision caused the heavy armor to tilt dangerously before surrendering to the gravity. Lucas finally broke out off his bewilderment but it was too late. He managed to grab the armor's helmet but it came off. The rest of the armor collapsed down the stairs, the clatter of steel rang like a tocsin as the detached parts tumbled down for what felt to him an eternity. The night's silence apparently carried the deafening sound everywhere and he had notified his presence to whomever was patrolling in the close vicinity. Lucas had frozen up with the helmet in his hands, not even realizing that his spell had worn off and he was again drowned in darkness. Down the stairs, he heard the rattle of steel again. Someone was coming his way in the dark and had stepped on the scattered armor pieces. With his back against the wall and his finger tightening around the helmet, he closed his eyes and held his breath. What were the chances for the stranger to pass by without casting the wand lighting charm that would give away his presence?
