A SINGLE DIARY ENTRY

April 4th, 2063

I'm a witch? Apparently.

This lady came to the house just before dinner, which was odd on its own for a Wednesday. Dad was out, but me, Brina and mum were making dinner - pizza night! She gave mum a letter, and she let me read it after. Well, being April, obviously I thought it was a joke, even if it's not Aprils fools anymore. But sometimes companies do late jokes, or timezones, she'd said she was from Aotearoa and I don't know what their time is like over there anyway.

A witch, she said, and that's what the letter said. Mum wasn't half surprised as I was. But she said it explained why my phone always played up, or my laptop had to get fixed so often - something about magic not liking technology, which honestly that's kinda a big no from me? I can't go somewhere where I don't have access to my socials. How am I supposed to contact all my friends? I barely get to see them as is because we move around a lot, not so much now when I was supposed to be going into high school, but definitely early on.

Mum wants me to check it out at least, she says to give it a try and see how I feel about the whole thing. I mean, it could be a cool adventure - I've seen so much of the world already, this would be something exclusive, different, something only I would know - and I'm honestly kinda into that vibe, not that I would tell Brina, I'm pretty sure she's devo that I'mma disappear for a year.

Christa ♥

Christa stood in the long line of students, her heart almost beating out of her chest. She could hardly believe this was actually happening. Just three months ago she had been sitting in her family's little house in Parramatta, blissfully unaware that she would soon be surrounded by wizards, magic and an entire school full of people who had been living a completely different life from her own. Now, here she was, her new robes itching slightly at the collar, eyes wide as she watched the students ahead of her. The hall was enormous, the stone walls stretching higher into the vaulted ceiling than she thought they should be able to. The candles were floating overhead, casting a warm sort of golden glow over the tables, and she couldn't help but to look up, her mouth dry at the sight. It was all so terribly different from what she'd ever known, but also somehow, everything was so cool. Was all of this just for her benefit? Did they do this for everyone?

She tried to focus, to slow her racing thoughts. "It's not that big of a deal," she whispered under her breath, though it wasn't helping to calm her very well. After all, it wasn't every day that you got sorted into a wizarding house, was it? She didn't know much about them, though she'd tried to read up on it a little. The different houses seemed to come with different opinions from everyone else in different houses, and everyone seemed to think their house was the best. As the line moved forward, Christa adjusted her glasses - no, wait. She didn't need her glasses actually, and so she pulled them over her head instead. Her whole world was now shifting into focus and she wasn't sure what to make of it.

Langley, Christa!

She flinched, feeling her face heat up as the entire hall seemed to turn to look at her. Her heart thumped in her chest again as she forced herself to make her way up the steps to the stool, the solitary, surrounded stool. She tried to ignore the way the students were watching her - maybe they weren't even watching her, but it really felt like they were. She was definitely not used to this kind of attention, but there was no going back now. She dropped herself into the stool, the nervous energy buzzing through her as the weird little hat was placed on her head. She hoped it didn't mind the sweat. She could barely hear the voice in her head, but it felt as though it was sifting through her brain, trying to figure her out. It was weird... a very weird feeling indeed.

"I am sifting through your mind, figuring you out. Once I've found it, I'll know exactly where you should go. I'll say, that you would've made a rather good Hufflepuff with that kind and hard-working nature but, I feel you'll see great success in...Gryffindor,"
