Family

Mother: Nyasha Umutoni-Thorne (a Rwandan witch and magical botanist).
Father: Nathaniel Thorne (a Muggle playwright from London).
Siblings: None. He's an only child.
Extended family: There are talks of a mysterious cousin from Nyasha’s side who once attended Uagadou and disappeared into magical research in Madagascar. His father’s family line has mostly faded into the Muggle world; a few cousins think he’s a “science teacher at a boarding school.” He lets them.

Personality

Bastian is equal parts brilliance and mischief: a walking paradox of intellect and chaos. He’s sharp-tongued, charming, and radiates the kind of confidence that makes people believe in their own magic just by being around him. Behind the theatrics, though, there’s a deep empathy; he reads people like he’s reading the air itself. He thrives on laughter, debate, and a touch of harmless rebellion; anything that keeps life from going stale. At his heart, Bastian’s a born teacher: he believes that curiosity is the purest form of magic, and he’d set the entire castle on fire if it meant sparking a student’s creativity.

Likes:
  • The smell of spell parchment and lemon polish
  • Storms (as long as he’s indoors)
  • Magical jazz from the 1940s
  • Tea with honey and clove
  • Spontaneous midnight duels
  • Floating candles (he collects rare varieties!)
Dislikes:
  • People who belittle “soft” magic like art or emotion-based spells
  • Bureaucracy
  • Cold porridge
  • Quills that squeak
  • Unnecessary rules
Hobbies / interests:
  • Experimenting with new charms and naming them dramatically
  • Brewing experimental teas (half are delicious, half explode)
  • Stargazing with enchanted telescopes
  • Collecting cursed jewellery and “fixing” it for fun

Backstory

Bastian was born in Edinburgh to a Muggle playwright and a Rwandan witch who believed plants could feel emotions. His childhood home was a mix of theatre scripts and talking ferns -- loud, loving, and a little enchanted even before he knew the word for it. When his first burst of accidental magic made his father’s quills write poetry on their own, his parents handled it with absolute wonder. But his Hogwarts letter came during a stormy night that also brought tragedy -- his father’s sudden illness left the family shaken, and Bastian threw himself into Hogwarts life as both escape and expression.

At school, he was the kind of student professors couldn’t forget; creative, clever, and always skating the edge of chaos. He found comfort in Charms, where magic felt like breathing, and in friendship, where laughter became his shield. But behind his confidence was a quiet grief he never really processed. When his father died during his fifth year, he buried the pain in performance (jokes, spells, smiles) to keep people from seeing the crack in his heart.

First to Sixth Year
Hogwarts School of Witchcraft of Wizardry

full

First year was when Bastian realised that magic felt less like learning a language and more like remembering one. While most students struggled with wand movements and incarnations, his spells often responded to emotion first; brightening when he was excited, faltering when he was nervous. Professors quickly noted his instinctive grasp of Charms, though his tendency to experiment earned him a reputation as "promising but unpredictable".

By second and third year, Bastian had found his rhythm within the castle, throwing himself into Charms Club, Duelling Club and any elective that let him explore magic beyond the syllabus. He became known for his flair and confidence, often helping classmates with practical spellwork, even as his own magic grew increasingly improvisational. Care of Magical Creatures and Ancient Runes quickly became favourites, grounding his creativity in theory and living magic alike.

In fourth year, Bastian experienced a subtle shift in how he approached magic, becoming more thoughtful and deliberate in his experimentation. What had once been instinctive play began to feel like genuine research, as he started questioning not just how spells worked, but why they responded the way they did. Though he maintained his humour and charm, he spent more time in the library than ever before, drawn to texts on emotional resonance, symbolic magic and advanced charm theory.

Fifth year marked a quiet turning point. The loss of his father and the growing unrest in the world left him relying heavily on performance and productivity as coping mechanisms. His grades remained excellent, but his magic grew volatile beneath the surface; powerful, responsive and increasingly tied to his emotional state. It was during this year that professors began gently encouraging restraint and grounding techniques.

By sixth year, Bastian had outgrown the standard curriculum at Hogwarts. His charmwork was innovative enough to blur the line between student and researcher, yet he struggled with precision when overwhelmed. During late-night practice, Bastian attempted an experimental charm designed to stabilise emotional spellcasting. Instead, the spell created a feedback loop; his emotions amplify the magic, which in turn amplified his emotions. That forced him to confront the limits of his control, and the realisation that Hogwarts could no longer give him what he needed. The decision to transfer to Hogwarts NZ came not from failure, but from the understanding that growth sometimes required distance, silence and an entirely new way of listening to magic.

OWLs Grades and Classes at Hogwarts
  • Charms (O) - Top of the year, examiner wrote: "Unusual creativity; exceptional instinct."
  • Defence Against the Dark Arts (O) - Excelled in practical, flawless under pressure.
  • Care of Magical Creatures (O) - Gentle, intuitive and fearless.
  • Ancient Runes (O) - Deep theoretical understanding, especially symbolic magic.
  • Music (no OWL grade as Music didn't have one) - Exceptional music rhythm and spell resonance, particularly in charm-based compositions. He's also a pretty good singer (despite himself saying he's awful), as well as playing the guitar and piano.
  • Transfiguration (E) - Brilliant concepts, slightly too much flair.
  • Herbology (E) - Strong, especially with magical plants and ecosystems.
  • Arithmancy (E) - Solid grasp, not his favourite but very capable.
  • Potions (A) - Knows the theory, struggles with emotional precision.
  • Astronomy (A) - Good when awake. Occasionally forgot it existed.
  • History of Magic (P) - Knows the content. Was asleep.
Did Not Take / Dropped
  • Divination - Took one class. Politely fled.
  • Muggle Studies - Didn't take the exam (ironically knew too much already).

Extra-Curriculars
  • Charms Club (Years 1-6)
Role: Member → Vice President (years 4-6)
Reputation: "Brilliant, chaotic, and probably inventing something illegal."
This is where Bastian truly lived. He joined in first year out of pure curiosity and quickly became one of the most active members, known for staying late to test variations on standard spells. By fourth year, he was helping run sessions and unofficially naming experimental charms, much to Professor Flitwick’s amused concern. His demonstrations were equal parts educational and theatrical, and younger students often attended just to watch what he might accidentally set on fire.

  • Duelling Club (Years 2-6)
Role: Star performer → informal instructor (years 5-6)
Reputation: "Terrifyingly calm when things go wrong."
Bastian joined in second year and immediately stood out for his agility, creativity, and instinctive defensive magic. Rather than overpowering opponents, he specialised in redirection, disarming, and psychological feints, often turning duels into performances. By fifth year, professors frequently asked him to demonstrate techniques, and younger students sought him out for private practice sessions.

  • Hogwarts Theatre Society (unofficial) (Years 2-6)
Role: Founder and director
Reputation: "If Bastian’s involved, something will sing, sparkle, or explode."
Entirely his fault. He founded it in second year after discovering that half the school wanted to perform but no one had bothered to organise it. The society staged enchanted adaptations of classic plays, complete with floating sets, illusion charms, and musical spell effects. Bastian usually directed, occasionally starred, and always over-designed the magic.
This was where his love of performance and magic truly fused.

  • Care of Magical Creatures Study Group (Years 3-6)
Role: Enthusiastic member
Reputation: "The one the creatures like."
Less formal than the others, this was a small group of students who volunteered to assist with creature care. Bastian had an intuitive way with animals, especially those that responded to emotional cues, and was often called in to calm distressed or aggressive creatures. He developed a particular interest in semi-sentient species and creature ethics.

  • Wizard Chess Team (Year 3 only)
Role: Player (briefly)
Reputation: "Too creative to play by the board's rules."
He joined for exactly one term. Found it intellectually stimulating but emotionally exhausting. Became deeply offended when he lost to a rook with better strategy. Quit dramatically and never looked back.

  • Library research circles (unofficial) (Years 4–6)
Role: Founder of multiple temporary ones
Reputation: "Academic chaos with good citations."

By fourth year, Bastian had formed rotating research groups focused on emotional magic, symbolic spellcraft, and experimental charms. These weren’t official clubs, just clusters of students who trusted his instincts and wanted to explore magic beyond the curriculum. Professors were vaguely aware. No one ever quite stopped them.

Seventh Year
Hogwarts NZ

full

The beginning of seventh year felt strangely unreal to Bastian. Hogwarts in Scotland was still beautiful, still familiar, but something in him had shifted; the castle no longer felt like a place of endless possibility, but a space he was slowly outgrowing. His magic remained powerful ,yet increasingly sensitive -- reacting to stress, expectation and the weight of everything he refused to say out loud.

The decision to transfer came quietly, wrapped in concern rather than discipline. Professors spoke to him in gentle tones about potential, balance and learning in an environment better suited to his style of magic. Though the opportunity was framed as prestigious, Bastian understood what it really meant; Hogwarts could no longer give him the kind of grounding he needed, and staying might do more harm than leaving.

Saying goodbye was harder than he expected. Ravenclaw Tower at Hogwarts in Scotland felt too small and too precious all at once, every moving staircase suddenly sentimental. He laughed it off, of course -- joked about becoming "internationally mysterious" -- bur the truth lingered in the spaces between farewells. Leaving Scotland and Hogwarts wasn't failure; it was the first time he chose growth over comfort, even when it meant stepping into the unknown without a script, spotlight or safety net.

Classes in Seventh Year he tends to take (from 6th year)
  • Charms
  • Care of Magical Creatures
  • Ancient Runes
