Adorah enjoyed the buzz of the first week of classes. The first years, no matter what semester, had a little air of chaos around them, trickling throughout the castle. The second years weren't much better, but at least they knew where they were going around the castle. As the students came in, she stood at the doorway greeting them, watching as they found similar seats to the previous year, and began conversing in their usual friend groups. As the bell rang, she went to her desk, took attendance, and then looked up at the second years as the bell rang. "Welcome back everyone! Most of you should remember me from last year, but I'm Professor Zumwalt. I'm excited to see you all again and move on to some new parts of astronomy this year. Let's get started!"

"This year, we are going to be focusing locally in astronomical terms - on our own solar system."
She paused a moment, letting students finish taking out their notes and giving a knowing glance to those who were not quite paying attention yet. "We're going back thousands of years when Ptolemy, a notable muggle astronomer, and others came up with the idea of a Geocentric Universe. Everyone pretty much agreed on the idea in the muggle world. However, wizard astronomers who tried to bridge the gap and tell muggles that idea was wrong... well, they were pretty much ignored, including the wizard Aristarchus," Professor Zumwalt paused again, gauging if she'd already lost a few students with her story. It was difficult to keep 12 and 13-year-olds engaged, especially in a subject where they weren't using their wands. However, she hoped that some of them were keeping up.

"A Geocentric Universe, simply put, is that everything is revolving around the Earth while the Earth stands motionless. It wasn't until the year 1540 that things started to change in the world when Nicolas Copernicus published work suggesting a Sun-centered model. Johannes Kepler was the first to realize the planets moved in ellipses, not circles like Copernicus had assumed. We talked about ellipses last year if you remember. Can anyone remind the class what an ellipse is?" Professor Zumwalt asked, picking a student whose hand shot up quickly. "An ellipse is the way the earth goes around the sun, and it's an oval-shaped circle," they answered. "Yes, exactly. 2 points to you!"

"The planets and other objects flying around the Sun are held in their paths by the Sun's gravity, as it is the most massive object. That is the Heliocentric model our solar system follows."
Professor Zumwalt paused a moment to glance at the clock. She saw the second hand was about 30 seconds away from hitting their time, and she could see a few students yawning as they tried to adjust to night classes again after their break. "Well, that finishes today's lesson. I have a short bit of homework for you; make sure you grab a sheet from the stool by the door on your way out," she called as many students headed to the exit.

Astronomy had been alright in his first year, but not really one of the lessons he was most looking forward to. Still, the Professor was nice and he supposed he didn't mind getting to sit around staring up at the sky for a little bit. He made sure to arrive on time, taking a seat and pulling out some things just in case he needed to take some notes on the lesson. Which, it appeared as though he did, jotting down just a few things the Professor was saying, mainly the important bits which sounded as though they might end up on the exam at the end of the semester. The fact they had homework to do was a little disappointing, though Miles supposed he didn't mind as it was only a small bit and wasn't some really long essay the Professor was expecting him to do. As he he stuffed his things back into his bag once they were dismissed, Miles grabbed one of the sheets on the way out of the door to do later.

Angelo stifled a yawn behind his hand as he walked into the Astronomy classroom. He wasn't trying to be rude, he was just really sleepy. He didn't think he would ever get used to having night classes even if it wasn't surprising anymore. He slid into a seat near the back, a precaution in case he drooped. He opened his notebook and took out his pen and began to scribble notes in as the professor began the discussion. He was a little familiar with the geocentric and heliocentric theories though the names weren't really something he could easily pluck out from memory. He supposed that the sky was the same in both the muggle world and the wizarding world so there wasn't much difference when it came to what they would be studying. From what he was hearing it just seemed that muggles had some trouble initially catching up. Still, he wondered if that still proved true. Muggles have been to the moon after all. And well, studies of other planets using robots still continued. He wondered if wizards still thought themselves superior in this field of study though he didn't say anything. When class was over, he made a mental note to do the homework tomorrow. Hopefully he remembers.

Astronomy was so far away, even though she is a Gryffindor and it wasn’t as far away as some other places. Still, as she slipped into he Astronomy class, she huffed a little because she was going to have to get used to walking up and down all the stairs again and it wasn’t like the towers were particularly easily accessible. She found her seat easily in middle of the room, grinning at the rest of the class as she prepared to take notes. She found it kind of interesting how much things had changed over the years and took as many notes as she could about what the professor was saying. Soon she had a pretty sore hand and when the class was over she headed straight for the library to learn more about the models they used to use in science classes.
