Family History:
The Thorne family are Muggleborns who have lived in Wellington and surrounding areas for generations. Baxter James Thorne married Elliana Ruth (neé Michaels) Thorne, and together they had three children: Zephyr, Amaryllis, and Sage. Baxter is a botanist and works for Victoria University of Wellington, while Elliana works as a member of the New Zealand Parliamentary Counsel. Elliana's career kept her very busy, so while she was home as much as possible, Amaryllis grew up a daddy's girl.

Her older brother, Zephyr, was the class clown at school, always getting in trouble and getting detentions. He was mostly just acting out, pulling silly pranks, but back at home, Zephyr channeled that energy into teasing his sister and hiding her toys. Teachers were often hesitant when Amaryllis arrived in their classes a few years later, expecting her to cause the same chaos as her brother. Wanting to avoid detention and prove to be the complete opposite of Zephyr, Amaryllis did everything by the book. She was quiet in class, not wanting to draw any unnecessary attention, and studied hard. She was more than happy to let Zephyr steal the spotlight and hog all of the attention, whether for good or bad. Sage, her younger brother, is a sweet boy, but she worries that he will begin idolizing their older brother and follow in Zephyr's footsteps.

Baxter Thorne kept a nice garden in their backyard, marking off a small corner just for Amaryllis to grow her own flowers. She didn't have any pets, but her flowers were her pets, and spent lots of time reading, napping, and studying among her flowers. Zephyr hated when she received her Hogwarts letter and all the attention was on her preparing for school. He threw a tantrum one afternoon and ran out to jump around and stomp on all of her flowers. She spent the entire summer nurturing her flowers back to health. Amaryllis is going to miss her garden very much while away at school, but her father promised to take care of it while she's gone.

Personality:
Amaryllis is a very quiet and shy girl. Faced with the large personalities of her brothers at home, she took to being her father's shadow tending to the gardens outside. Gardening has a very calming effect on her, and any time she wanted to avoid confrontation, she'd run and hide out in her garden. Her older brother was always the class clown and trouble-maker, so Amaryllis did everything possible to be the exact opposite, being very studious and following all rules to avoid getting in trouble with her parents or teachers.

Entering into the magical world on her own, Amaryllis will be even quieter than normal, completely overwhelmed by this new world. She's used to going to her parents for support, and while they do support her, they won't understand, isolating her even more. It will take a bit for her to warm up to the castle and students, but she can get animated when discussing things for which she's passionate, such as her flowers and playing the violin. Hopefully soon she will learn to embrace her new life, open her eyes to the wonder of magic, and blossom like the flowers she loves so dearly.

Amaryllis stood inside the giant hall, eyes wide and mouth agape as she took in the spectacle before her. She'd never been anywhere so grand, yet haunting. After about the tenth time that day, she'd stopped pinching herself, but it was still hard to believe that this was her actual life. She was supposed to be returning to school with the rest of her friends with whom she'd grown up. Instead, her parents had to give some excuse about her going off to some fancy boarding school. Her older brother, Zephyr, had been especially rude about it all, so she couldn't say she was unhappy to be away from him for a while.

Still, there was nothing anyone could have said to have prepared her for this moment. The young girl had actually jumped when the old hat started singing about the different houses. No one had told her she was entering a world of singing hats. She'd just expected to see someone pull cards out of their sleeves or maybe a quarter out of someone's ear. Sure, Amaryllis had bought a wand, but she still wasn't convinced that the response hadn't been some sort of trick of the eye.

When her name was called, Amaryllis hesitantly tip-toed up to the stool, her fingers gripping the edges of the wooden seat as the hat was placed on top of her. She turned her head about eyes looking under the brim in an attempt to find some sort of speaker device. "You don't really talk, do you? I bet one of them is a ventriloquist," she whispered to herself, her eyes landing on the professors. Surely one of them was doing that trick of throwing voices to make it sound like the hat was speaking. Now that was an impressive trick she wouldn't mind learning.

"A professor long, long, ago enchanted me but I'm not a puppet. I think you'd make a good hufflepuff...certainly that seems like the obvious choice for you....but I think you could find excellence in....Ravenclaw,"
