Alaska: an English name from the Aleutian word alakshak meaning 'great lands'.

WHY? and thoughts:
Alaska's name was given to her because it's where her parent's honeymoon cruise visited. There is no real significance behind her name, except it reminds her parents of happier times. Alaska is quite fond of her name, she finds it has a funky, 'cool girl' vibe to it. Another bonus is that she has yet to meet another Alaska.
Dorothy was chosen by her mother. Dorothy was the name of her mother's younger sister who died shortly before Alaska was born. Alaska hates the name Dorothy, and thinks of it as a frumpy, old lady name; although she would never tell her mother in fear of hurting her feelings.

Alaska was sorted into Slytherin, which was the obvious placement. Alaska definitely portrays many qualities of a stereotypical Slytherin - although deep down she wanted a different house. In the long run, Slytherin with be the best suited house for Alaska and help her to reach her potential; which she understands and has finally accepted.
SORTING POST:
Alaska didn't know how to feel. On one hand she was overwhelmingly nervous, and the other slightly annoyed. The American couldn't believe just how many students were here, and she wasn't even in the hall yet. Tightening her ponytail, the girl shifted around trying to not get in the way. Alaska wished she could've been sorted somewhere private, the embarassment of actually being placed in front of everyone made her feel faint. Although, for a few moments everyone would be looking at her and would know her name. That was appealing enough for the girl to stay where she was. Sighing, the blonde pushed her way to the edge of the clump, wanting a bit more space.
Once the doors opened, Alaska instinctively started walking towards the Great Hall. Everything was so amazing, from the sheer size of the hall, to all the students and teachers sitting; it was a lot of noise but, Alaska could handle it for now. Her parents wouldn't tell the girl anything about Ilvermorny, but Alaska was convinced it was different that this. She looked around, everything was so different than her home in America. The blonde automatically stiffened when a ratty old hat started singing, Alaska hadn't even noticed the headmistress had spoken. A light blush tinted Alaska's cheeks, she didn't realize the sorting hat was an actual hat.
