Ash Richards had never really expected much to come of his life. After the countless times he had messed up, lost someone or landed himself in trouble, the ex beauxbatons man had come to expect let down in his life. Lately though, he found himself more and more at a loss for words. His life had taken the most unexpected turn of events. An unexpected friend from his past had walked into his life when it had hit its all time low, and he couldn't have been more blessed and stoked on life. Sofie had become the ruling factor in his life, and the anchor to his emotions. When she was sad, he was sad. When she was angry, he was angry. When she was happy, he was happy, and he had never been so happy in his life. After spending a portion of his life serving time in a muggle jail for an aggravated assault charge, he had taken a different approach to life. He was no longer the raging alcoholic he once was. He no longer lashed out with his anger, or turned to violence as an answer. And most of all, he had stopped harming himself, and was taking a happier approach to life. He had quit smoking, started eating healthy and had even taken to working out when he had the spare time. He and Sofie had been going steady for a while now, and he saw her as often as he could around work and they're lives. The only problem they had was that he found himself shutting off when things between he and Sofie were getting to serious. He had been fighting his hardest to overcome the mental shutoff, but nothing he tried was working. He knew what the problem was, but he simply hadn't wanted to come to terms with it. Shaking his head clear of his thoughts as he sat on the lounge inside his apartment in Obsidian Harbour, he sighed to himself and picked up the stereo remote.

Ash had always preferred a muggle life over that of a wizard. He placed that all down to his muggle family who had all but abandoned him after he had been arrested. They had never quite come to accept Ash for what he was. Well, his parents hadn't at least. Ash never thought or spoke of his brother though. The memory was to painful to mull over. Preferring the muggle life had lead Ash to view some pretty amazing parts of the world, especially when he had played in his band. Still staying up to date with muggle music, Ash now played a song by one of his favourite muggle artists, Tyler Carter. The musician had recently paired up with a personal friend of Ash's, with whom he had toured with before, and the cover was one of Ash's favourites at the moment. Playing the song now, he hummed away at the tune.

Sofie Caris was in a pretty good place, but she could honestly be better. She had been dating Ash Richards for a while now, but anytime she tried to talk about the future, or taking things further, to anything along those lines, Ash kind of just shut her out, which really upset her. She really liked him after all. Though she didn't know everything about his past, she didn't care, she liked the Ash that she was with now, if he wasn't like this in the past, then she would rather not bring it up. Something was holding him back though and she'd be damned if she was going to let this go on with no promise of what her future held. She wasn't the kind of girl that could just be strung along by the arm and not expect anything in return. It just wasn't her. So, she had decided that she was going to give Ash Richard's an ultimatum. If he couldn't accept that, then as much as she wouldn't want too, she was going to walk. She really liked Ash, in fact she was pretty certain she loved him, as far as one could tell these things and she didn't think she would ever find someone that she could connect with so well, but if he wasn't willing to put in the effort, then what was she going to do? She wasn't just going to stay there, she didn't exactly owe him anything, well, except her happiness. Who was she even kidding, she didn't want to leave, but if she had too choose between a chance at a future and nothingness, then the choice was too easy. Flicking her hand as she left her hours, Sofie quickly grabbed the flower crown one of her students had made her and pushed it on her head. She loved flower crowns. They were adorable.

Sofie had always been a big fan of the muggle life. It was always fun to talk to her mother on the phone, or to text her or anything else. Sofie kept her phone with her at all times, as did her sister. Helle was still living in Copenhagen, which of course wasn't surprising. She'd recently gotten a job up there as a magical talent scout. She did tend to travel quite a lot, which was fine with Sofie, but she rather thought that Helle should be staying with their mother. Still, she supposed that was not her decision to make and if her mother was not putting up a fight about it, then what right did she have? She wasn't much better anyway, she was a long way from Denmark, she was living in New Zealand and had been for years. Her job was here and she loved it. Eventually, Sofie got closer to the place she wanted, and as she drew nearer, she kept reciting what she was going to say in her head. She didn't want to come on too strong after all. He was still a guy, they were renowned for being bad with their emotions. She wanted to be calm about it all, collected. Walking into Ash's place, Sofie looked around and spotted him on the lounge. She walked up to him and flung her arms around his shoulders, giving him a quick kiss on the cheek before she stepped around him to rest beside him. "We need to talk."

As the song had come to an end, Ash signed to himself and smiled. He always managed to feel happy after a good sing to himself, not that he did it often. At that point, he heard the front door open, and knew that Sofie had arrived. He had come to expect her at certain times, and often overstressed when she was late. He flashed her a smile, and hugged her as she wrapped her arms around him. He smiled stupidly when she kisses his cheek. He didn't know how, but she always managed to make him feel like a teenager again. However, the smile faded ever so slightly at her first words. Usually, she greeted him with a hello, or asked how he was or how his day had been, the usual idle chatter. But he knew something was wrong at the words 'we need to talk'. Frowning to himself, he sat upright and looked her in this eyes, trying to find some reason for them needing to talk. He knew he hadn't done something to upset her. Majority of his time was either spent with her or at home. Ash had very few friends after his stint in a muggle jail, and he didn't much care to try and reconnect with the people who hadn't bothered for him. So that couldn't have been it. "Well hello to you too," he said with a grin at her, "And what do we need to talk about exactly?" he asked her curiously, trying to keep his voice levelled, and not show how concerned he was. Surely she wasn't breaking up with him? She had just hugged him and kissed his cheek. He highly doubted that that was it. Or he hoped it wasn't, at least.

Trying to wrack his brain and mind for a possibility of what might be wrong, he came to only one conclusion, and it scared him the most. It had to be about his earlier thoughts, about the distance that he always put between them when things got to serious. For a year now they had been casually dating, but with no official strings or titles. He had accepted his place with her, just as he had thought she had. But apparently, from what he was assuming about this situation, she wasn't content. The sudden realisation that Ash was classically doing as he always did and was over-stressing hit him, and he tried to put his mind at ease. He would have to find out the reason for this before he went further with his thoughts, though the entire time he had sat there waiting, which had seemed like forever to him but had only been a few seconds, his chest had tensed and tightened. He was already fearing the worst.
