Aegerine Matilda Night

The Basics

Character's Name: Aegerine Matilda Night
Name meaning:
Aegerine:
Aegerine is a mineral of the pyroxene family, commonly occurring in volcanic rocks. It is named after the Norse god of the sea, Aegir. Crystals of aegerine form shiny black blades or long prismatic crystals, sometimes with greenish or brownish hues. Aegerine is believed to be a stone of "integrity and self", with a strong positive and protective energy.
Matilda: From the Germanic name Mahthildis meaning "strength in battle". Aegerine inherited it from her paternal grandmother. It is the only part of her name that she hates.
Night: Night is an old Anglo-Saxon name, originally (in the time before standardised spelling) a name taken by knights.
Nicknames: Aegerine loves her name, and will not tolerate nicknames. A rare exception to this is that she will occasionally put up with her mother calling her 'Aegie'.

Character's Birthdate: 29 October
Star Sign: Scorpio
Strengths: Loyal – Passionate – Resourceful – Observant
Weaknesses: Obsessive – Suspicious – Manipulative - Unyielding
Scorpios are fiercely independent. They are able to accomplish anything they put their mind to and they won't give up. They are perfectly suited to being on their own. Scorpios are known for their possessiveness and jealousy but on the other hand, they are extremely loyal. Scorpios have an excellent memory and combined with an inability to let things go, they can hold a grudge against someone who did them harm forever, in fact a Scorpio rarely if never forgives and forgets. Scorpios are extremely ambitious, persistent and determined which is shown through a power hungry, controlling attitude. Scorpios are fierce competitors, combined with their powers of observation and their excellent memory, they will recall facts and when necessary, bring them to the table at the time of need. They will win justly, with proper facts and arguments to support their thoughts and opinions. They are all about intensity and contradictions. They like to be aware of a situation and always know what's going on, figuring this out with their probing mind, on the other hand, they are interested in the occult, the paranormal, conspiracy theories and other types of similar unknown mysteries. They are very capable of hiding their true feelings and motivations, they often have ulterior motives or a hidden agenda. To be out of control is very threatening, even dangerous to the Scorpio's psyche, when they control, they feel safe.

A Little Deeper
Personality:
Aegerine is generally quiet and reserved. She is very intelligent, and passionate about her interests, although she doesn’t often share that enthusiasm with others. She has a tendency to think she is better than others – smarter, more interesting – and often uses this haughty exterior to disguise the fact that she’s actually quite shy. As such, she is very independent; she prefers to do things by herself, will not often accept help if it is offered, and considers it a weakness to need it. She is an astute observer, but what she notices she will often pretend not to like, regardless of her real opinion. Aegerine usually keeps her true emotions close to herself. With this aloof, distant manner she is difficult to get to know, and more difficult to befriend, but she is fiercely loyal to those who are close to her.
Strengths:
  • Aegerine is clever and quick-witted, with a talent for creative problem-solving.
  • Aegerine is independent, content to do what she wants or needs to do without input from other people.
  • Once she puts her mind to a problem or mystery, Aegerine will not stop working at it until it is solved.
  • There are few people Aegerine cares about, but she will stand by those people no matter what.
Weaknesses:
  • Aegerine is haughty, holding herself above others. She is often rude and aloof.
  • Aegerine is shy, but she hates to admit this. Instead, she puts up a hostile front.
  • Aegerine’s fierce independence leads her to reject any assistance even when she does need it.
  • Aegerine is stubborn; it takes a lot to get her to change any opinion, and she will rarely admit she was wrong about anything.
Interests: Aegerine is very interested in history, particularly of the Renaissance and Victorian periods . She is fascinated by anything mysterious, and enjoys trying to solve mysteries or puzzles. As a result, her favoured genre of fiction is murder mysteries, especially historical murder mysteries, and she takes particular delight in trying to solve the crime before the fictional detective does. Aegerine is also interested in the macabre, and drawn to things spooky and bizarre. She likes music, particularly classical music, and is an enthusiastic and moderately adept oboist.
Likes: Black, goth aesthetic, cats
Dislikes: Pastels, boisterous people
History:
Aegerine grew up in Reading, England, the only daughter of Syenite Night and Peter Smith. She was quite young when her parents divorced; Aegerine lives with her mother, and travels to London to visit her father, when he can spare the time. Aegerine went to a primary school with a small wizarding community. She had a small group of close friends, some magical, some muggle. She grew up expecting to go to Hogwarts Scotland when she was old enough. All of that changed when her uncle and aunt died in an accident.

Aegerine had always known that she had a distant wider family, fractured by feuds among her grandparents’ generation. She never had much interest in them, but her mother had long wanted to reconnect. Tragic as it was, the accident provided her with the opportunity to do so. Syenite adopted Aegerine’s orphaned cousin, Shale, and got in touch with the family in New Zealand. Eventually she decided to move to New Zealand to be closer to them, a move which Aegerine resents immensely.

Aegerine Night shouldn't be here. She should be going to the proper Hogwarts, in Scotland, not this anachronistic colonial imposter. Her mother had dragged her to the other side of the world to be with family she couldn't care less about, and the more she met them, the more she disliked them. She resented everything about this situation, having to leave everything she'd ever known and come to this place where everything was wrong. It was winter in June, and while she preferred that to the heat of summer, it remained jarringly unpleasant. Naturally Aegerine had done her research, and the reach of history, her favourite subject, was pathetically short here; written records only dated back to the Victorians, and the native people had only arrived in the thirteenth century or so. Even geologically speaking, the country was ridiculously young. Aegerine hadn't discovered anything about it yet that wasn't a disappointment.

And yet, and yet when she walked into the Great Hall with the other new first year students, and saw the size of it and the vaulted ceiling with the stars shining up above, she couldn't help but be impressed. Of course it was a Victorian reproduction of a castle, rather than a true castle, but in the privacy of her own mind she had to admit that the Victorians had made it very impressive. Of course, she would never confess that to anyone else, and she maintained an expression of studied disdain. While most of the others were looking around at the hall and the people (far too many people), Aegerine looked up at the stars. She could see Orion, upside-down, and the sight of the familiar constellation inverted reminded her once again how far she was from home. And then, at last, her name was called, and as Aegerine left the anonymity of the crowd all of her thoughts of what might have been fell away as she was confronted by what irredeemably was. She was here now, and however she felt about it the hat’s decision would affect the trajectory of the rest of her life. She felt terribly vulnerable all of a sudden, though she kept her head high and her pace brisk. She sat down awkwardly on the stool, painfully aware of all the eyes on her, mind seething with curiosity and anxiety. The hat slid down over her eyes, leaving her in merciful darkness to discover her place here.
