It was Rue's first day in her new school. She never liked changing schools, but this time she didn't care. She had no friends to miss.
She slung her backpack over her shoulder, finding her new uniform uncomfortable and itchy. Starting a new school was always like this.
Rue wondered what embarrassment she would be going through today. It was always the same - She would make a fool of herself, blush, and then never speak to anybody again. All she needed to do was keep her head held high, and everything would be OK.
Probably.
Rue started to walk along the lake's edge. She knelt down by the water and dipped her fingers into it. It was icy cold. Rue shivered, wiping her fingers on the grass. Everything was so different here. She didn't belong in here. She was a shy, tiny little girl who didn't know a thing about magic (Mainly because she hadn't been paying attention), and this really wasn't the school for her. She held back the tears, slipping off her shoes and dipping her toes into the lake. It was cold, yes, but she like the stab of pain that shot up her leg. It made her feel real. It was the only way she could ever tell. Pain.
Footsteps. Rue jumped, turning her head and pulling out her wand from her pocket self consciously. But it was only another student. She sighed, putting her wand back in her pocket.
'Sorry.' She said quietly, knowing this conversation wasn't going to go anywhere. 'I wasn't thinking. She added, wiggling her toes and making ripples in the water.
