Katalina Vanderhol Harker, or Kat as she was more affectionately known by those closest to her, sat on her front porch wrapped in a faded and well loved quilt while enjoying her morning tea. The sun shone brightly across the front yard of the home she shared with her husband and love of her life, Chace. The front yard where she and her family had shared so many beautiful memories over the last several decades. As she neared her sixtieth birthday, the former lioness frequently felt waves of nostalgia come and go. As life tends to go, her age was making itself known in subtle yet noticeable ways. The small crinkles that the corners of her blue eyes. The smattering of grey in her chestnut hair. The constant ache in her left shoulder from the bludger that finally took her out of her career and the game that she'd loved to play for the majority of her life. While witches and wizards did tend to have longer lifespans than that of muggles, that didn't exclude them from the effects of aging. Perhaps, they were just able to do so with a little more grace or at least at a slower pace.
Birds chirped as Kat thought about her upcoming birthday. There was going to be a big party. Her sister, husband and daughter made a huge fuss about throwing it for her and she didn't give up too much of a fight. Any excuse to have cake was a good enough excuse in her eyes. Sixty. How did this age sneak up so quickly? If she blinked, it felt like just yesterday that she'd given birth to Mattyson. Blink again and she was walking down the aisle to a man that she knew from the age of sixteen she wanted to be her forever. And then...blink again, she was eleven. Walking up to a hat that would decide her fate for the entirety of her school career.
The Katalina now and the Katalina then were vastly different versions of each other. Eleven year old Kat was timid and shy. She was slow to make friends, but as the year progressed, she blossomed and so did friendships. Thinking back on it, the bold fiery shift in her personality finally emerged from within during her third year, during the Tri Wizard Tournament. Looking back now, she could laugh at how ridiculous everyone's behavior had been, but she'd gotten to kiss one of the most popular boys in school at the time and won a bunny out of the deal, so, really she came out victorious. That next year though...that was the year that changed a lot for her in so many ways. She met the two boys who would infinitely change her heart and soul in so many ways. Chace Harker and Sumner Reine (Drage). The ultimate love of her life and her first love that rolled into heartache. Those two were so intertwined over the course of the remainder of her time at Hogwarts New Zealand that it was hard to remember a time without them being there.
But if you really were to ask Katalina, the fiery Gryffindor would tell you about the time with her dorm mates. Her three best friends. How they'd all spent so much time together that, at times, they could just share a look and they instantly knew what the other would mean. They had their fair share of laughs. You know, the ones where it's so hard that it makes your stomach hurt and your cheeks ache, but you feel so incredibly light? Those kinds of laughs. And then they also had their share of heartache and crying. When they were all shoulders to be leaned on. And, on a few occasions, there were fights. And no, not arguing fights. Actual punches thrown. Those were usually shared between herself and Andy because, well, sisters fight.
Katalina took a deep breath and exhaled slowly as she thought about her best friend. You would think that after all these years the sting of losing her would soften, but just the opposite really. There were times that she'd find herself thinking Merlin, Andy is going to think this is hilarious and it packed a wallop every time it came back to her again. Andromeda was gone. Dead. And had been for a very long time.
And then, what felt like not long after, Kiera was gone, too. Her core group of four was down to two. And then the guilt would sometimes eat at her because she didn't keep in touch with Cyndi nearly as often as she should.
The sound of footsteps pulled her from her deep dive down memory lane. Her husband and daughter were making their way up the footpath towards the house. Bringing fresh breakfast treats as requested. Her mouth pulled into a smile as her husband leaned into to kiss her on the forehead. She looked up into those green eyes that she'd gazed into for years and still made her heart thunder out of her chest. "Deep in thought," he asked her as she took a pastry from him. "Just remembering school. It all seems like it was so long ago, but I still remember so much of it so vividly," Katalina mused as she tucked into her breakfast. She snorted lightly. "Just thinking about all of those silly boys I kissed..." Her husband laughed as he walked into the house with Mattyson, yelling behind him, "Tell memory Sumner I said 'hello' and that he's still a git!" Katalina nearly toppled over laughing at Chace's response.
Katalina Vanderhol Harker was here, at almost sixty years old. In love with the life that she'd made with her husband and their daughter. She'd had a successful career. She was watching her daughter live out her own successful career. She was living a life that she'd created that was stitched together from a lifetime of moments and memories. She was here and here was such a beautiful place to be. Kat sighed with content and followed along inside the house. She wrapped her arms around her husband and he returned the embrace. Kat looked at Chace and all she could think was that she was over the moon happy that she was getting to grow old in a house that was made of the two of them.
