Sixth Years: Lesson Two

Angel had spent most of the morning trying to coax the today's plants into playing nice so he'd having something to show the class when they finally arrived. Feeling slightly disheveled, but triumphant, he tried his best to appear put together as his sixth years began entering the greenhouse.

“Alright, today we’re dealing with a particularly dangerous plant known as Devil’s Snare,” he started once the class was settled, waving his wand to unroll the collection of parchment diagrams he’d pinned to the board. “Now, to the untrained eye, Devil’s Snare could be mistaken for our friend the Flitterbloom here.” As he spoke, Angel walked over to the potted Flitterbloom bush he’d found languishing in one of the safer greenhouses. ”Both sharing the tentacle like appendages, though Devil’s Snare is a lot more on the murderous side,” he said, tickling one of the flitterbloom’s roaming tendrils. "So next time someone gifts you some flitterbloom, maybe make sure they don’t have it for you, huh?” Angel said with a laugh. Maybe joking about attempted murder by plant was in bad form for kids, but hopefully they’d at least pay attention now.

It also makes a pretty good defensive measure, though it does have some very clear weaknesses.” Leaving the flitterbloom to its lazy undulations, Angel returned to the center of the classroom. “Anyone able to tell me how to defend yourself if you’re ever caught up in some Devil’s Snare?” He surveyed the class, pointing at the student who looked most confident to answer. “Good, exactly right. Light, whether natural or artificial is your friend with Devil’s Snare, so sunlight, fire, you get the picture. When exposed to light, it’ll recoil, and obviously fire is even more effective in that regard.

"But now, that's enough talking for one day, I have something much more interesting to show. Let's pay a little visit to the Dangerous Plants greenhouse,” he said, dangling the greenhouse key loosely from a finger. “Follow me!

The Dangerous Plants greenhouse was a strange place, the humid air perfumed with all sorts of strange smells as Angel lead the class inside. The long wide center aisle was surrounded by screened in sections containing a strange selection of bizarre looking flora, and Angel made a point to give the class a measured look before continuing on. “Now we’re just looking today, so no wondering off and please for my own sanity, don’t touch anything.

The class approached a darkened section and Angel outlined the coiled tendrils of the plant within as their eyes all adjusted. “No lights please, but if you look carefully, you might be able to recognize the plant in here, you see it?” Angel raised his eyebrows, hoping a student might be able to identify the Devil's Snare from its dark surroundings alone, even if they were having trouble spotting it.

After everyone had gotten a good look at the Devil’s Snare, Angel checked his pocket watch, deciding to wrap things up. “Alright, that’s all we’ve got today. We can hang out in here a bit longer but don't blame me if you're late for anything. And make sure you brush up on your illumination and fire spells, you never know when you might need it,” he said with a wink, waving the class out of the door.

RP the lesson. First poster can answer the question for house points. Your homework is to practice any spells your student might need to fend off Devil’s Snare; link me an RP for extra credit (this can be posted later and PM'd/@'d at me or edited into your post anytime before the semester ends, just lemme know)

Friday headed into the herbology greenhouse and took her usual spot at the back of the room. She looked to the professor as he showed them a picture of a devil’s snare. She nodded along, and though she had her quill in hand did not actually take any notes from it. She knew how to defend herself, but did not raise her hand to be able to answer it. She followed the professor out of the room and to where they were able to then see one. In one of the dangerous greenhouses. Friday watched but was quick to leave when she could.

Aura hadn’t been sure what to expect from today’s lesson but it definitely wasn’t being told not to accept plant gifts from apparent would-be murderers. That felt a little dark but she did laugh despite herself, so maybe she was the problem there and not him. Honestly that wouldn’t surprise her as she did tend to be a problem. She knew the kind of damage a Devil’s Snare could do, mum had one in her garden once and they’d had to call a team out to get rid of it. No one was quite sure how it had gotten there, but it definitely hadn’t been because her mother had brought some flitterbloom. She hung back with the majority of the group when they were taken into the Dangerous Plants Greenhouse and she watched the snare in the dark. Aura instinctively reached for her wand, despite being told they shouldn’t light anything up yet and just gripped it. She was a witch, her natural instinct when in an uncomfortable situation was to go for her wand. It wasn’t her fault. She stayed alert and listened until they were dismissed. She didn’t even bother looking at Teddy for this one, because she was pretty sure they were probably all feeling about the same with a plant that could eat them whole.

Callie walked into the herbology greenhouse and took her usual spot in the room. Her gaze moved towards the professor at the front of the room and then looked to the plant that the professor was showing them, showing how it was similar to real place that was currently in front of them in person. She took a couple of notes from what the professor was saying and made sure to get down exactly what would protect her against the threat of the plant. She then followed the professor and the rest of the class as they headed into a different greenhouse so that they would be able to see the plant, truly between it and the flitterbloom she would have trouble telling the difference. Callie took the time to really watch it and then headed out of the greenhouse.

Enoch walked into the herbology classroom and took his usual spot in the room. He glanced at the professor as the man got started. He knew what the creature/plant was and he knew how it was similar to the one that the professor had beside him. He felt confident that he’d know how to tell the two apart though perhaps this confidence was a little unearned. He wrote down the bits and piece the professor told them and then followed the rest of the class out of one greenhouse and to another. The professor showed them an actual devil’s snare, but they didn’t get to really see it in action. The lecture was wrapped up shortly after and he headed out of the greenhouse.

Lucy was in a good mood as she made her way down to the herbology greenhouse. Practice was going well, her relationship was going well - all was good in her books. She got inside, took a spot, and waited for the lesson to begin. Apparently they'd be learning about devil's snare. Lucy took down some notes as the professor spoke, knowing this potentially could show up on the exam. The professor asked a question so Lucy raised her hand to answer. She'd actually done some of the readings - something she was about half-and-half in doing most of the time. "They don't like light, so light," she said. She was pleased to get it right.

She then followed the professor into the dangerous plants greenhouse. Lucy looked around curiously at all the plants she'd never gotten the opportunity to see before, but stayed close to the group of students. She didn't want anything bad happening after all. They were led to a darkened section, and Lucy's eyes struggled to adjust for a few minutes before she started to make out the plant. It was a little bit monstrous - but maybe that's because Lucy knew how dangerous it was. Class ended soon after this, and Lucy went back to the other greenhouse to fetch her things before returning to the castle.

Teddy had listened along to the lecture and took notes, but the thing that stood out most to him was that there was a Dangerous Plants greenhouse. How, after six years, had he not known about the Dangerous Plants greenhouse? It was probably a good thing that he didn't know about it because eleven year old Teddy would have gone exploring, and given it's name, probably wouldn't have survived to see this lesson. He followed Professor Castillo into the greenhouse and watched the devil snare. It was ominous, deadly, and kind of cool. Once dismissed, Teddy left the Dangerous Plants greenhouse and returned the the previous greenhouse to collect his belongings.
