To Bring Some Colour To My Life

Da'ruka sat on a rock by the harbour, the wind roaring through the air, blowing his long hair in all directions. Stroking some of his hair behind his ear, he looked across the horizon, watching as a just departed ferry vanish beyond it. Closing his eyes, he breathed in deeply, feeling the salt tinged air enter through his nostrils before he breathed them out slowly. Sometimes, he felt ever so lonely in the world, one man in the many billions! Sometimes, he had desired for a friend, a companion, one that would go through lonely nights with him, one that would laugh with him.

Many had said that Da'ruka was antisocial, yet it was never the case! He had always wanted to reach out, to simply talk to a random face in the crowd, but something in him had stopped him. Something in him had prevented the words from coming out of his mouth. Something in him had made him recoil and walk away. How he wished that something would simply disappear!

Turning up the collars of his trenchcoat, Da'ruka slid his hand to a sheath inside it, sliding out his wand. He had come here for a reason, and that was to drop off an application in the Ministry of Magic. After all, he had wished he could do something for the world, and being a Magical Law Enforcer would help. Twirling the wand in the air gracefully, Da'ruka uttered one word;

"Avis."

One word was all it took, one word was all it took to bring the magic within him to come roaring alive. Suddenly, a bird materialized in the air in front of him, flying into his outstretched hand. The bird was a dull grey, a boring, nonchalant dull grey. Smiling ruefully, he tapped the bird with his wand and it immediately started switching colours; First blue, then green, then pink, then yellow, before the whole process started again. Chuckling to himself Dar'uka only thought of one thing at that time;

I want to bring some colour to my life.

Adelaide leaned against a wall, eye closed. She had done her job, done everything she could, but she couldn't get a job. She was only eighteen for goodness sake! No-one wanted to hire a barely-qualified witch, no matter how good at magic she was. Adelaide was sick and tired of being 'evil'. She didn't have to pretend anymore, she could be anyone she wanted.

Adelaide was no longer a Duquette, she wasn't a killer. The explosion had killed seven muggles, and Jaques Duquette had thought it was her doing. Adelaide hadn't killed those muggles, even though she believed that she had. She was just a very confused girl. She felt so young compared to all the uncles. Who was she to think she could find her mother in this place? Delani was nice enough, but she simply couldn't be Adelaide's mother.

A thousand tears Adelaide had cried, a thousand times she had thought how unfair everything was. Now she was on the run, and couldn't even stay with Delani's family. She missed her old life, before she had been caught up in all this hatred. What happens in here stays in here, Jaques had said. Why everything happened to Adelaide, it wasn't fair. But as her father said a million times: life isn't fair, get over it.

Adelaide was tired of wearing nothing but black. No colour, no life. She was like and dead man walking these days. Even Zacharie noticed, and he only saw her on Brightstone weekends. How she wished she had been a better person, and not such an idiot. She was Adelaide Garnier, a typical eighteen year old witch, not some murderer.

She hated her new life, running and hiding. Even her money was all gone, she had been disowned. But she couldn't go back to Delani, it would be too horrible to bear. Adelaide opened her eyes, and saw something colourful. A bird? She noticed the man who had conjured it. "Wow." she breathed, amazed that there was still some colour left in the world. She had spoken quietly, but the man would've heard it as she was quite close to him. Adelaide was perfectly hidden in the shadows, so he probably wouldn't see her.

Watching intently as the colour of the bird's feathers slowly flickered from colour to colour. Tapping it with his wand again, the bird stopped changing colours. Its head remained green, his right wing was pink, the left yellow and its body was blue. Smiling to himself, Dar'uka let the bird go, whispering into its ear as it flew off, buffeted by the wind.

Suddenly, Dar'uka remembered something that he had heard, a simple whisper, a simple whisper that was tinged with slight admiration. Inclining his head to the side, puzzled, Dar'uka pricked his ears to register any sound. After a while, Dar'uka admitted to himself that it was probably the wind playing tricks on his ears, as all he could hear was the loud roaring of the wind in his ears, and the crash of giant waves, sending sea-spray all over his face.

Pulling his coat around him even tighter, Dar'uka's curiousity was aroused again. Now, he was suddenly sure that that noise wasn't something made up by his mind. Turning around, his coat billowing about him in that sudden rush of movement, Dar'uka's wand shot out from his robes.

Muttering a single word, Lumos, the tip of Dar'uka's wand shot out a beam of thin light that illuminated the shadows behind him, outlining the silhoutte of a girl. Opening his mouth, he had to try a few times before his salivary glands produced enough saliva for him to speak. "Hello. Come out of the shadows, if you will."

The bird stopped changing colours and flew away. Adelaide was sad to see it go, and she was surprised about that. She hadn't a clue what she was doing here in the first place: she hated the sea. Everything about it scared her, the waves, the sand.

Adelaide's eyes opened wide and she looked a bit like a possum caught in the headlights. She was a little surprised the man had used Lumos, she would have used a different spell, but people were all different.

She slowly stood up, and came out of the shadows, her eyes on the stranger at all times. "Hi..." she said, a little frightened.

Peering into the darkness, Dar'uka saw the woman's silhoutte grow clearer and clearer as she walked towards him. Looking at the woman, Dar'uka turned his wand down, pointing it to the floor instead of the light being shone on her.

"I apologise for the scare." Dar'uka said to her politely, in a gentle tone.

Extending her hand out towards her, Dar'uka offered it as a sign of non-hostility, and also to help her step out from the shadows. "Don't worry, no dark wizards around."

Adelaide blinked as the light was no longer n her face. Her own wand was in her left hand, hidden behind her back. The man said there were no dark wizards around, but it was not easy for Adelaide to trust anyone. Hiding for so long made her wary of strangers, but this man did not seem scary like the other people she had met.

Adelaide took Dar'uka's hand, so she didn't trip up, and just looked at him. She smiled, a rare thing for her. "Adelaide Garnier." she said. Her accent was soft, and her voice was not harsh for once. Being nice was something she would habve to practice.

With a slight heave, Dar'uka pulled towards Adelaide's hand and gently brought her up the docks. The steps were old, and they were all ridden with slippery moss. It would do no good to her if she tripped, for the harbour was mainly rock itself.

Seeing the girl smile, Dar'uka could tell that it was a rare thing for her to do - He knew full well, for he also rarely smiled. Letting a small smile curl up the side of his lips, making him look quite scary, actually. "Dar'uka Anditekos." he replied to her politely.
