Third Years, Week Three [Boggart Introduction]

Professor Adler was pleased with the way the semester was going so far. There were a couple of students in particular, that seemed to be incredibly engaged and asking many questions that showed their interest. She'd been keeping an eye on these students, both out of curiosity for their progress and because she was proud to see those that put in substantial effort.

Today's lesson would be one that the students may have been waiting for since they started at Hogwarts, and one that would open their eyes to parts of themselves that may be tough to acknowledge. It would be difficult for some more than others, but Geo was going to make sure that her third years were respectful to each other, given the personal proximities. The desks were gone, and instead the room was empty all for the wardrobe at the head of the room. "Good morning third years," she smiled at those closest to her. The woman was standing at the head of the classroom, next to the dark wooden piece of furniture. She wondered how many students in this moment could predict the next thing out of her mouth. "Who can tell me what might be in here?" She gestured to the wardrobe, before picking one of the students with their hand in the air. "Excellent! And can anyone tell me what a Boggart looks like?" she chose a different student this time, smiling when they gave her the correct answer.

"We will be meeting a Boggart in today's lesson," she told the group, tapping the wardrobe with her wand. "If you could all take a step back please, I will need the Boggart to focus on me and if there's too many people close to it, it will get confused." The professor gave everyone a moment to clear the space in front of her before moving to face the wardrobe. She unlocked the door, and suddenly the room darkened around them as the door slowly swung open.

Every year Geo was faced once again with her own boggart, surprised in the small ways it would change as the time passed. No matter how many times she saw it though, it never got any easier. The woman a took a deep breath and tried not to panic, when it was Lumos and Eden that walked out. She tensed, knowing the relationship between these two children was particularly strong. Lumos' Boggart form was a ghostly apparition of his former self, and Eden was looking up at him. Lumos was an excellent big brother and Geo wouldn't have put it past her if he were to do bold and stupid enough to put himself at risk, if it were to save his little sister. Professor Adler raised her wand at the pair, ''Riddikulus!' Suddenly the scene in front of them changed, Lumos' form coming back to life as he began to tickle Eden, her squeals of laughter filling the air and making her mum laugh with her, as she stepped forward to bundle them back into the wardrobe. The blonde locked the wardrobe, the light in the room brightening the space once more.

"A Boggart is a shape shifter," she said, turning to face the class once more. "It takes the shape of whatever frightens you the most." Professor Adler certainly didn't want any of the students in the room to misunderstand what they'd just seen, implying she was scared of one of their schoolmates. "For me, the idea of losing any of my children is what haunts me the most." Professor Adler said openly, knowing this would be tough for students to show with others in the room. "Everyone will have something of their own that is their worst fear, and the Boggart will use this to scare you," she warned. Each Boggart would take a personal form depending on who it was focused on. "You may not even know what your worst fear is, until you see it emerge in this form."

"Thankfully there is a charm we can use to transform a Boggart into a form that we find funny. A Boggart's biggest weakness is laughter, so you need the Boggart to take on a new shape of something you truly find amusing. If you can picture in your mind the scene of something funny while you use the incantation Riddikulus - ri-du-kull-lis, then the Boggart can be banished. Now we won't be practicing this yet, because I want everyone to be prepared before facing their fears,"
Professor Adler wondered how many would be disappointed. "In two weeks, you'll be asked to face a Boggart, however if you would like to practice meeting a Boggart privately before you practice this in the class, please come and see me in my office and we can work on this together prior to others witnessing it." She wanted the students to have the opportunity to test their fears without others watching for the first time. Professor Adler hoped the students would feel safe enough to practice facing their fears in a couple of weeks, and those that were uncomfortable would be able to speak to her about it first.

Ares had heard about Boggarts from his older sisters, although to this day he still didn't know what actually scared them most of all. Maybe that was because they knew that if Ares found out, he'd probably try to scare them with it. The third year kept quiet as the professor showed them what the boggart could do, the way it climbed into your mind to pull out the deepest fear it could find, only to present it to everyone out in the open. Ares was very unsure that this would be a good idea for him, and certainly it wasn't something he wanted anyone to know. He didn't know what was going to come out of the wardrobe but he didn't fancy letting the other kids in the room in on his secret either. At the end of the lesson he went to find the professor, armed with a list of reasons why he was unable to participate in the future lesson activity.

Gaia walked to the classroom and found herself a seat. As she sat down and took her things out she began listening to the professor and as she raised her head at the question her eyes collided with the closet with the woman. A bitter taste filled Gaia's mouth as she remembered how Nia had been different after the lesson they finally faced their Boggarts last year and she raised her hand. "It's a Boggart." Gaia said flatly as she was picked to answer. She wasn't all that keen to face her own Boggart, she knew she wouldn't freeze up but she didn't trust the people in her class group not to use it to their advantage to know what she was most afraid of. If she was being honest she probably wouldn't trust anyone with such information. It made the third year uneasy for the rest of the lesson and she thought about not going to the class all together when they faced the Boggart, but she needed the grade. Talking to the professor had worked out for Mania in the end, hadn't it? On her way out of the classroom Gaia considered her options.

James made his way into Defence Against the Dark Arts for their latest lesson and listened to Professor Adler introduce them to the concept of boggarts. The thought of having to face his greatest fear was pretty daunting, even if he didn’t know what it was. He watched as Professor Adler demonstrated, and it involved her children; that must have been horrible to watch for her, and he suspected it was an annual occurrence for her. He watched as she demonstrated the spell and explained that laughter was the biggest defence against a boggart. James took some notes, and once the lesson was over, he left the classroom.

Aiya had to admit that she wasn’t as excited about her classes as she thought she would be. Most of them were boring and she was starting to feel a little trapped as she had no other choice but to attend them. She found that the best way to distract herself was writing letters back and forth to her family. Admittedly, she was starting to grow a little fond of the owls in the owlery, but not fond enough that she regretted taking the magical creatures class. She had just finished sending a letter to her father and headed back down to attend her classes.

Aiya entered the Defence Against The Dark Arts classroom and took her usual seat within the room. The professor started the lesson quickly by asking the class about Boggarts. Aiya raised her hand for both questions and was called upon the second time. "Well, no one knows, really. They morph into whatever you fear most when you look at them." Aiya said confidently, having read up about them in advance. As the professor demonstrated how to overcome a boggart, the teen raised her eyebrows at what the boggart had turned into for her. It was simply 2 people, and the Slytherin didn't quite understand. She thought it would've turned into something scary, such as a giant spider or a 3 headed dog. It made Aiya wonder what exactly her own boggart might be. She left the classroom at the end of the lesson with this exact thought. She just hoped it wouldn't be anything embarrassing.

Priyanka settled into the classroom, then waited for the class to start. A few minutes passed when the class started and the topic was boggart. This topic was an interesting topic that made her wonder who her boggart would be. She wrote down everything the professor said and how she could get away with a boggart. It was even very interesting that she could laugh so hard at this creature. And the fact that the professor said that they would have to face a boggart seemed crazy, because she didn't even really know what her boggart was. Then the class ended, she packed her things in her bag, said goodbye to the professor and as she walked out of the class she thought about who her boggart could be.
