Esmerelda Lazuli stood alone in the square of Brightstone village. It was a cold, overcast day, and at the moment not many people were about. Esmerelda herself was waiting for her best friend and cousin Cassandra Calbrese, looking forward to seeing her for the first time in weeks. The pair had so much news to catch up on! Esmerelda could have called herself excited, but considered that beneath her dignity. She drew her black cloak tighter around her body as the chill wind blew, impatience growing. It's not like Cassandra to be late, she thought. Maybe she's having trouble with that brat Katie again.

To be honest, Esmerelda didn't really mind. It was nice to have some time alone, without him intruding on her. She felt increasingly constricted by his presence in her Dunedin home . . . their home. Esmerelda sighed, driving thoughts of her deceased husband from her mind, and looked around. Only to see the man himself, insubstantial, striding towards her. How dare he? And now, of all times! With growing anger, Esmerelda turned towards the man.
"Go away!"

Lorenzo Lazuli finally caught sight of his widow, and hurried towards her. He knew he shouldn't, really, but teasing her was the only fun he could get in the afterlife. Except for those moments snatched with his daughter Lapis, and they were too few and far between, with her at Hogwarts. Although the witch shouted at him to leave, Lorenzo ignored her fruitless commands. He would not be controlled by his murderer.
"Esmerelda! How are you my dear?" The ghost's mocking tone contradicted the friendly words he uttered. Lorenzo knew exactly how Esmerelda felt about him.

True enough, he had been intruding on her life. But his motives were the best possible. Lorenzo wanted to draw his wife away from the dark side, as he himself had been converted. He wanted to negate the reason that she had killed him. He suspected that this would be a long, slow process, one that might not even have the desired effect, but he couldn't help it. fter all, Lorenzo still loved her. And still more importantly, he didn't want to see what would happen to Lapis if her mother ended up in Azkaban. The girl would be all alone in the world, save for a mere phantom . . . he couldn't allow that to happen.
