Sofia Carolina Lorena Fernandes was born to Marisa Fernandes and Gonçalo Andrade on the 17th of January, 2015. Marisa and Gonçalo were unmarried at the time, so Sofia took her mother's name and the family never bothered to correct this once the couple were married. Marisa Fernandes was taken in by Olavo and Odelia Andrade, when she ended up on the streets as a child, abandoned by her parents for unknown reasons. Marisa was never raised as a sister to Gonçalo, and so both were aware that they were not blood, nor officially relatives. Marisa was home tutored by Olavo, and Gonçalo, by Odelia. It was during one summer when Olavo and Odelia had some guests over, that Marisa and Gonçalo first established their relationship as more than just friends: Both having been turfed out of the house to avoid upsetting the very particular guests who had flown over from England, especially to see Odelia, the two had gone out in search of something to do. They decided to explore the building, several streets over, hidden away, which had recently been abandoned due to poor structural form. The two ended up on the second floor, having deep conversation before Gonçalo confessed his feelings for Marisa. Flattered and feeling likewise, Marisa rewarded him with a kiss, to which he rewarded her with proposal. Though the two were engaged, they never actually wed until after Sofia was born. The relationship was accepted by the family, and even praised.
Sofia had a generally quiet upbringing in the house that Gonçalo had proposed to Marisa in. Though they never purchased the house, muggles did not know they lived there, thanks to repelling charms. Several other charms also kept the house strong and upright. Sofia had no siblings, but this did not bother her as her mother and father gave her all the attention she could want. Gonçalo got a job at a wizarding shop, several miles away. Marisa worked as a saleswoman for a local muggle business. When her parents were at work, Sofia would be looked after by her grandmother, Odelia. The two of them got on well and Odelia began to teach Sofia how to read tarot cards. She also taught Sofia how to count, to read and write, to socialize, to juggle teacups, how to speak English and a bit of French. Sofia used these skill as much as she could, though her mother quickly tired of the occasional broken cup. Gonçalo managed to get a position on the Portuguese Quidditch team as a Seeker. He began working a lot and Sofia saw very little of him.
At the age of six, Sofia's life changed drastically when, midway through the year, a fire started in the house. Sofia had been asleep, at the time, and her father had run to rescue her from the flames which were fast nearing her room. Marisa had already made it outside, and was shouting to her husband to send Sofia down on the roof as the flames had blocked the staircase. A set of drapes hanging on the walls of Sofia's room, caught light as she'd been passed out the window, onto the flat roof, unfortunately, her father was trying to climb out the window when the fire leapt forward, blocking his path. Sofia witnessed his face through the flames as he tried to find another way out, before he disappeared. His funeral was held one week later.
Sofia never really learnt to speak Portuguese, properly, having learnt English first. However, she did learn Spanish when she and Marisa moved house. They lived in Spain for five years and Sofia attended a local school where she learnt to speak Spanish. Sofia did not enjoy this school as much as she had enjoyed her grandmother's teaching. However, Marisa and Sofia moved again when Sofia was eleven. Marisa decided that Spain had not been far enough for a fresh start, and she moved the two of them to Australia, where she managed to get a job as manager of a wizarding shop. Sofia, often finding herself alone, took to climbing the local trees, in which she would sit and read books. She only ever had one meeting with a koala during the night; though no harm came of the meeting, both had been equally surprised at one-another's presence, and Sofia had resigned, deciding that sleep would be of more use, anyway.
Sofia had moved to Australia during the interval between school years, so she was due to attend the nearest secondary school, come the next term. Surprisingly, and to Sofia's great amazement, she received a letter inviting her to Hogwarts. She accepted and soon joined the school as a Slytherin, much to her initial disappointment.
