Sixth Year, Lesson Two

With the introductory lesson behind them the sixth years would be getting stuck into practical spell casting for their first proper lesson of the semester and he hoped they would enjoy that. The desks had been moved to the sides leaving a wide open space in the middle of the classroom that greeted the students as they made their way in. Once James was satisfied everyone was present he waved his wand to close the classroom door. "Gather round, wands at the ready," James instructed the sixth years once they were inside. They wouldn't need their books or quills that lesson as they would learning a new spell. "Today we will be practicing the defensive spell Protego Horribilis, first can anyone tell me the difference between Protego and Protego Horribilis?" James paused to give a student a chance to answer, he picked one of the students raising their hand and called on them. "Exactly," James beamed at them before continuing.

"Okay, only one way to go about this, pair up and get to practicing. One of you using stupefy and the other using Protego Horribilis, begin," James spent the lesson going between the pairs in the classroom making sure everyone was only using the spells they were allowed to use and helping any students who asked for help. At the end of the lesson he opened the door and dismissed them.

[Aurora Chase]

Aura was ready for defence class today. She hoped they were out of the introductions phase and could move onto the more complicated stuff. She noted the open space and pulled her wand out immediately, wanting to get right into whatever they were about to get into. She flicked her eyes across the empty floor and stood off to the side so she could see what the professor was about to instruct them to do. Practical work was always her preference—quills and theory were fine, but spellcasting was where she thrived. When he asked the difference between the two spells, she threw her hand up to answer the question. “Protego is a general shielding charm that blocks minor to moderate spells, but Protego Horribilisis much stronger—it’s used to defend against particularly dark or powerful magic,” she said confidently, sure that was the correct answer. Pairing off, she took her stance and practiced for the rest of the class until they were told they could leave. She was going to go and practice her non verbal spells somewhere she wasn’t going to accidentally hit someone.​

Teddy didn't have to be told twice, taking out his wand when instructed by James. He raised his hand to answer the question but Aurora was chosen first. He lowered his hand and nodded to show she had the right answer. "Well done!" He told her quietly because she probably wanted his praise. Then Teddy paired up and got to work practicing Protego Horribilis. He could feel it was more powerful and would definitely come in useful in the dueling tournament. He practiced until they were dismissed then left the classroom.
