Seventh Years, Lesson Two

James was glad to be back in the classroom and stood in front of his desk as he waited for his seventh years so they could get started with their second lesson. "Welcome back, everyone take your seats," James directed his students and once they had all done so he raised his wand to close to classroom door. "Today we will be learning about Lethifolds and Dementors, you might want to take notes as this will be included on your N.E.W.T exam," James paused to give his students the chance to take out what they needed to start taking notes and once they had settled down again he resumed.

"Lethifolds and Dementors are quite similar and are repelled in the same way, however Lethifolds are a highly dangerous and carnivorous creature, does anyone know what lethifold are commonly known as?" James asked and waited for a student to volunteer the answer. "Correct, moving on. The black cloak of the lethifold gets thicker after digesting a human, as fun as that thought is does anyone know how a lethifold would attack a human?" James nodded when a student gave him the correct answer. It was no doubt something that would sit with some of his students as it had with him when he was a student.

"Moving on to Dementors which you might be more familiar with, they don't feed on bodies but rather happiness and can consume souls, once upon a time the dementor's kiss was an act used as a punishment of last resort for the worst of the worst criminals, though thankfully that is no longer in use as I'm sure you'll agree it is a fate worst than death," James let that last point sink in before he continued. "As mentioned earlier dementors and lethifold can be repelled in the same way, this is through the use of the patronus charm which you will be learning in due time," James waved his wand in the direction of the blackboard and his initial notes vanished and were replaced with the homework assignment. "Your homework is simply an essay on both dementors and lethifolds and is due before our next lesson, class dismissed,"

[Elio Boneheart]

Elio sat upright as Professor Cade welcomed the seventh years to their second lesson. The subject immediately piqued his interest. He scribbled notes quickly as the professor explained the similarities between Lethifolds and Dementors, mentally bracing himself for the inevitable questions. Honestly he wondered sometimes how muggles managed to survive in a world where they didn't even realise there was literally danger around every corner. If they came into contact with a dangerous magical beast, how were they supposed to do anything about it without magic? That was mostly the point, obviously, he thought, but that still didn't make a lot of sense of sense to him honestly. When Professor Cade asked what Lethifolds were commonly known as, Elio raised his hand with a confident smile. “Living shrouds, sir,” he said. The professor nodded and moved on, asking how Lethifolds attacked humans. Elio's hand went up again, but someone beat him to it this time. The gruesome image made his skin crawl, but he pushed through, jotting down more notes.

As the lecture transitioned to Dementors, Elio felt that little hint of unease again. He had read extensively about their soul-draining capabilities. He didn't think he was the only one. When the patronus charm was mentioned, a spark of determination flared within him. He resolved to master it when the time came. He might have been struggling some with wordless and wandless magic, but he wasn't about to let that ruin his chances of casting a successful patronus. As the lesson ended, Elio made a mental note to start his essay early. He wanted to ensure it was thorough, showcasing not only his understanding of these dark creatures but also his dedication to excelling in Defence Against the Dark Arts.

[Savannah Walters]

Savannah had been thinking a lot about what her last costume would be for the halloween feast. Savannah knew the moment she left school, she wasn’t going to be one to seek out costumes and parties, she would work because that was what she was supposed to do. Savannah was therefore keen to have one last good hurrah before she did so. The ravenclaw had a few ideas but now really wasn’t the time for that, she keenly put those thoughts away and then focused on grabbing what she needed for the day ahead and then heading out of the dorm room.

Savannah walked into the defence against the dark arts classroom and took her usual spot int he room. She took out her books and notes and placed them down in front of her as the professor told them they’d be going over Lethifolds and dementors. She had her quill in hand and began writing down what the professor was telling them about both creatures, focusing first on lethifolds and then on dementors, both as bad as each other, though morbidly she wondered what it might be like. The lesson was wrapped up shortly after and Savannah packed up her things and then headed out of the room.

[Anisha Khatri]

Anisha tried her best to put al the drama of the prefect meeting behind her, though it bothered her more than he would have liked to admit. She wished she could get rid of the feeling that half of her classmates hated her for no good reason, but she knew she should try her best to ignore them and move past it.

The Gryffindor made her way into the Defence Against the Dark Arts classroom, she took her usual seat near the front and took out her wand as well as a quill and parchment. Professor Cade told them they would be learning about Dementors and Lethifolds today, and was kind enough to tell them they would come back on the exams. Anisha raised her hand at the question, but once again was beaten to the answer by Elio. She took notes on the Lethifold, hoping more than anything that she would never encounter it in real life. She took notes on dementors as well, and then noted down the homework before leaving the classroom once they were dismissed.
