FIRST LESSON
Noel was reading over some of the homework assignments from the first years, figuring to start with it right away. But than the second years began to walk in the classroom and he put the assignments beside him on an pile, to focus on this class. He than stood up and welcomed them with an friendly smile. When everyone was inside he closed the door with an easy wave of his hand. And took an good look of the group of students he had in front of them. '' Hello everyone and welcome back to another year of Defence Against the Dark Arts.'' He was sure the students could tell by now that he was an different face than previous year. So he would explain and introduce himself for them. ''For the ones who forgot. My name is Noel Waldgrave. And I’m your professor for Defence Against the Dark arts for the upcoming years.'' He than explained making sure he watched the students in the eye. He didn’t had to go through the rules, since it must be clear by now for the second years, and they knew the fundamental basics of the Dark Arts.

He than walked towards the middle of the classroom and continued. '' In this semester we will talk about a variety of prank-like curses and jinxes. Like the Jelly-Leg Curse and the Trip Jinx, for example. In addition to that, we will also be handling the counter-spells for these prank-like curses and jinxes.'' He than saw some exciting faces but some seemed to be hoping for more than talking. '' And ofcourse that means that you will be practising these in class yourselves.'' He than said and gave an small playful wink as suddenly some seemed to be very excited and smiled. He than paused and walked back to the front to stand there. He than turned to the blackboard behind him and looked back to the class for an moment. '' I will be using the blackboard behind me to write things down. I would advise you to write along with me.'' He paused an moment to let the people who hadn’t already take their stuff could do that now. He than turned around to the class. '' So, who can tell me the definition of a curse or a jinx?'' He than asked while looking around. And pointed at an person close. And smiled and nodded approvingly as the student answered. ''Very well.'' He said and gave them a smile. And turned towards the blackboard to write the good definition down. Than moved on turning to the class again. ''And who can tell me the difference between a jinx and a curse?'' He than asked, choosing an different student in the back to answer. And than gave an friendly smile as they gave their answer. '' That’s right, good job.'' He than replied. Satisfied with it he writed it down on the blackboard. And looked at the students to see when he could continue.

He than let the blackboard for what it was for now and leaned at his desk. '' Next week we will practice our first jinx.'' He than dropped and knew they would be excited, most of them than at least. He would let them know next week that he didn’t want fooling around. For now he let them be excited. As he looked at the time, he figured it was time to close it off. '' The time is almost up. For homework, I want everyone to write down the names of three jinxes and three curses, and write down the effects of each jinx and curse. It has to be turned in before the start of next week’s class.'' He told them and made sure that, that messenge was clear. He than gave them an friendly smile and went sitting down at his desk. And dismissed the class, to return to the first years homework.

Please review the DADA Class Policy for first through fourth years.

Roleplay the lesson. As stated above, complete the assignment for extra credit:
- List three jinxes and the effects of each
- List three curses and the effects of each

The first two students to answer Professor Waldgrave’s questions will also receive extra credit. Only one question for one student please.

Felix wasn't sure he was ready for classes to begin, but then again he wasn't sure he ever would be. Taking a seat in the first Defence Against the Dark Arts lesson of the year, he'd heard from some of his classmates about what to expect from Professor Waldgrave's classes this year. "Can we practice the spell on you sir?" Felix called out. If the professor was going to let them practice the spells in class then it was only fair they could also practice them on the person with the most experience. Surely Professor Waldgrave wouldn't take issue with that. Making some notes on the types of jinxes and curses they'd be using throughout the semester, Felix couldn't help but wonder when they'd actually get to use them in a real life situation. Not during the dueling tournament, but out in public. In the wild. "Isn't a curse something that isn't done for fun? It's meant to give the spell caster an advantage?" Honestly Felix wasn't a reader, but that sounded right. Felix wasn't sure all jinx's were fun either, but a curse's intent was to hurt, wasn't it? At the end of the lesson Felix packed up his things and lurked outside the classroom for whichever of his friends wanted to walk with him to the next lesson.

Jasper’s last grade card had been a whole lot of P's and he knew he had to turn things around, at least enough to scrape A grades or ideally E's to keep his parents off his back over the next break. With that in mind he arrived at Defence Against the Dark Arts ready to focus. That focus lasted until Felix asked if they could practice the spells on Professor Waldgrave. Jasper snorted a laugh and no longer focused on the lesson. He tried his best to get that focus back and follow along until the lesson ended and the class were dismissed.

Rose was invariably on the side of her siblings in regards to the Defence Against the Dark Arts professor, but she wasn’t really all that bothered about it either. As she entered the classroom, she noticed first her sister and then Amory and took a second of hesitation to head over towards Amory before Sayuri quickly pulled her into the seat beside her. She quickly waved at Amory in apology before trying to at least pay a little attention to whatever the professor was going on about. She laughed into her hand when Felix asked if they could practice spells on the professor, honestly genuinely a question she was sure they all had at this point. She didn’t bother to answer any of the questions, just taking a couple of notes lightly instead because she wasn’t really that interested. When the lesson finally wrapped up, she scribbled down the homework and waited for Amory to head out alongside her.

Amory walked into the classroom meaning to perhaps sit with Rose but her sister stole her away, fair enough. Instead Amory found his way to sit next to Felix, who was also in the top two Gryffindors list, so it was as good a option as any. As the lesson began most of it was a blur, it's not that he didn't listen he did, well sort of. When Felix made a suggestion and there were a few reactions heard around the room Amory looked sideways to the boy, he had a fair point. "You know that sounds like a great idea. Wouldn't that be sort of fair?" Or perhaps they were the professors own personal guinea pigs or circus monkeys, who knows. Last year it had included demonstrations the Professor himself did on the students, perhaps this year too. Rest of the lesson Amory just listened, keeping his opinions to himself, not really bothering answering any questions. As the lesson concluded Amory strode his way towards Rose who was patiently waiting for him, it was sort of a nice feeling. Having someone wait to exit a class with him, as silly and small of a thing as it might have seemed.

Winnie walked into the defence against the dark arts classroom and took her usual spot in the room. She looked at the professor and smiled at him, nodding as he re-introduced himself to them, but she knew it was silly, people should not have such terrible memory than that. Winnie took her quill and began writing down what they’d be covering within this semester. She made sure to get down what was being said and then raised her hand at the question the professor asked, but in neither occasion she was picked to answer, which was frustrating. She took a note of the homework and then headed out of the classroom.
