It was bad enough that Savannah knew everyone was judging her hand-me-down robes, which were fixed by magic but seemingly still looked like they were a hundred years old. Savannah’s family was not well off, her parents really struggled to keep jobs, barely trying half the time and she was just left to her own devices. But at school, she wouldn’t have to think about them, she could just focus on her education, on having a little fun. She wouldn’t have to look after everything because there were house elves. She was going to be able to just learn, maybe make a friend and work so hard in her seven years that she would never end up like her parents. And unlike what that boy that had been taking a bath in the water said, she would not need anyone.
Savannah followed the group of students into the hall, she stayed mingled amongst them, unable to tear herself away from the fact that her robes just look bad in comparison to the shiny new robes of seemingly everyone else. Savannah knew how this would go, despite neither of her parents having gone to Hogwarts in New Zealand, she had lived close enough to the community that she had heard plenty about it from other people. Savannah stopped as all the other students did and she stood on the tips of her toes to see over other students rather than push her way to the front.
