It was a seemingly beautiful day at Hogwarts, one that would stay in Laura's mind forever. It felt that way at least. Today was a beautiful day, the sun was shining, the birds were singing a tune, a tune of pure freedom. It made Laura feel free; it made her feel like she belonged in the world she was in. A magical world. One full of mystery and wonder. One where everything and anything could happen. It amazed her, her world was so perfect and she admired everything about it. She had a feeling that nothing could ruin her feeling of sheer contempt. As she continued to walk past the beautiful, rippling water that filled the lake, Laura knew that in this moment, she never wanted to change a thing. She thought everything was perfect and she never wanted to leave. She enjoyed the peaceful aura the lake had. She liked how it was calm but had an air about it that made her want to stay away in fear impending doom would be at hand. Smirking to herself in a subtle but obvious manor, Laura paused quickly, she needed a quick moment to get herself together. A moment to capture her thoughts and the flawless scenery around her. Closing her bright eyes and breathing out, Laura heard a rustle in the bushes behind her. It wasn't a loud noise, yet it wasn't quiet either. It was a curious noise. Laura wanted to know more. She took a peek around her shoulder, seeing nothing, Laura put her mind and body back into the world around her, the one where she felt most at home. Hearing a noise like that wasn't unusual for her, she ignored it in the classiest fashion she could conjure, a fashion that she could wear without flaw.

A quiet place to sit and get back to her studies in a vicinity that differed from the one of the school library, Laura opened an eye, and then another eye to search for a comfortable and silent place to continue her studies. Exams were coming up soon and she wanted to do well, despite her everlasting daydreaming during class. Being in a world more imaginative instead of serious was a secret escape for her, one she wouldn't dare tell anybody about, even her sister. The surroundings at the lake were faultless, untouched by pollution that was slowly taking over the Muggle world. The Wizarding world was just too perfect to be disturbed. Or at least too protected. Laura spotted a large tree, one away from the shimmering water that would keep her books safe in case of the slight chance she could get splashed. It was in shadows, it seemed perfect, she could keep out of sight but still be in view, a compromising position, one that was just the thing for what Laura planned to do. The light could be a problem, Yet Laura was prepared, her wand was in her bag along with her books. Studying for exams was important, she wanted to succeed and since she hadn't payed much attention in class, hitting the books was what she needed to do. A hint of excitement crossed her face as she started to stroll towards the tree. It was a casual stroll, Laura wanted to keep everything casual that day. She was wearing her denim shorts, converse sneakers and a white tank top, one would say it was the perfect outfit for stepping out. Laura liked how she felt that day, a feeling she would grow to get used to, a feeling of optimism.

Approaching the tree, Laura threw her bag on the soil that surrounded it and sat down, leaning against the vast trunk. She felt the slightly chilling air brush softly against her pale face, it was pleasant, she enjoyed how the breeze felt on her warm skin. It was a hot day and sitting under a tree in the shadows feeling the misty morning air suited her mood immaculately. She didn't want this feeling to end, yet she needed to get on with her studying. Instead of feeling like an interesting task, it now felt like a chore. Laura just wanted to enjoy what was around her, she wanted to make the most of this beautiful morning before it turned into an orange sunset and then, turned into night. Laura didn't dislike the night, she enjoyed it very much. She just didn't want this wonderful moment to end. Letting out a ever exasperated sigh, Laura reached out to fetch her bag, taking out a book that looked like it was about defence against the dark arts. Laura opened it and started to read quietly to herself, there would be many mornings like this in the castle, she would experience many more and Laura knew it was the best thing to focus on exams, it was her future in her hands after all.

Rain swam through the peaceful waters of the lake, most mermaids chose to stay in their caves around this time where the warmer water was staying but not Rain, she loved swimming through a chilling ocean in the winter, no kids in the water so she would have to talk to them or scare them off if they got to destructive. Rain's long blonde hair rippeled behind her as she swam through the water, occasionally doing some turns in the water, it never got old, even though it seemed to be the only thing she could ever do.
Somedays Rain yearned that she could have legs and could talk above water, go to class like a normal student and take classes, go out and walk in the lush green grass or the playful white snow, but she knew that would never happen. Although she did like to sit on the beach from time to time and imagine she wasn't a mermaid.

Rain slowly came up above the cool water and looked around, she saw a girl reading a book, the girl looked nice enough and for once Rain craved some nice company, instead she usually got what looked like a nice kid instead was a pesky brat who kept on poking her tail or begging for rides and her answer to that usually was to drag herself back under the ripples and swim away. Rain swam towards the edge of the lake and pulled herself up on the sand quietly, her bright blue eyes shone with wonder to see what the girl was reading. Rain herself couldn't read that well but she had taught herself to write a bit.

Rain cleverly and carefully pulled herself up the sand. it was hard work pulling along her long golden tail but she was curious as ever, she was being quiet and trying to stay hidden behind the book so the girl wouldn't see her. Once Rain got close enough she pulled herself up and flipped over sitting herself next to the girl and leaning over her shoulder trying to read some of the words she cringed her nose and her light freckles gave her a mischevious look. Rain's long blonde hair dripped some water everywhere but she didn't care she was trying to read.

Reading her ever so boring school book, Laura wanted something different to do, she was sick of studying, she knew that she needed to but she just couldn't be bothered, this was a feeling Laura had grown to have often, a lethargic feeling that plagues her school work. Laura knew that she needed to study but she just couldn't be bothered at all. Her imagination was elsewhere, in a place that she wanted to be. She resented the thought of studying on a beautiful morning like this. She was quietly praying for a distraction, something that could give her tired brain an excuse not to do more work. Just a little something to keep her mind busy with something other than learning. Laura heard a rippling noise coming from the Lake, she didn't look up to see what it was though, the most important thing right now was to study, even though her curiosity was running wild. Her imagination was trying to think of reasons for the rippling, a Shark? No, a Shark in a freshwater lake, that's absurd, an alligator? No, an Alligator would be in the USA. She wanted to know what was making the curious noise but she couldn't leave her studying for moral reasons. She made the decision to keep reading her Defence Against The Dark Arts textbook in the hope it would be able to keep her mind where it needed to be, not where it wanted to be. Laura forced herself to continue to read like she had heard nothing, it was hard but she persisted and hoped that she could forget about the distractions around her.

As the rippling turned into what sounded like dragging, Laura started to become more curious, she wanted to know what it was, she cringed as she reluctantly kept reading the book. Laura had to admit, the book was boring, it didn't interest her at all, not like the noise she was listening to. It was getting louder, she started to become a little scared, maybe it was something evil going to hurt her, a monster from the lake that was going to drag her into the water where she will never be seen again? Laura started to regret going to the Lake alone this morning, she wished that she asked somebody to go with her but it was too late. There was nobody else at the lake, only her. She started breathing a little heavier, she was scared that se was going to get hurt. When the dragging stopped, Laura felt relief cross her face, she was so glad that the noise had stopped and that she didn't feel as scared anymore. She sighed and smiled to herself, she wasn't going to die, she was just being paranoid again. Laura actually felt like she wanted to read now, mostly because she felt safe enough now, she had no distractions anymore and she could actually read with succession, even though she didn't want to. When Laura saw a drop of water fall on the page, Laura felt her fear grow again, she hesitated to look behind her but when she did she saw a person, a person with wet hair. She was totally puzzled. "Did you just go for a swim?" Laura asked, she had no idea why the wet girl was trying to read her boring textbook.

Rain stopped attempting to read and looked at the girl, she asked her if she had just gone swimming and she looked at her, her heart churned to be able to reply, she wondered if she could drag herself into the castle and up the stairs to see if they had any potions to let her speak, it would be fantastic to have the ability to speak above water. Rain wasn't full of herself but she thought she had a nice voice, and like most mermaids an excellent singing voice aswell.

Rain looked at the Girl and raised her eyebrows before smiling kindly, Rain let out a small giggle which didn't sound to bad before pointing to her long Golden Tail which seemed to glitter in the slight sunlight. Rain smiled and then took the book from the girls hands and started to try to read again. she was finding the book interesting, how could the girl not have more of these to read they were fantastic.

The Mermaid flicked her long wet blonde hair out of her face as she turned a page delicately before looking back up at the girl to see her facial expression when she noticed she was sitting next to a mermaid.

When the Girl looked at Laura, Laura felt a little intimidated. She didn't know why but she just felt intimidated. Maybe it was because the girl wasn't saying a word. Laura felt as if she had said something insulting, the girl wasn't saying a thing and the scilence was almost deafening. She raised a curious eyebrow and continued to wait untill the girl answered. She had a weird feeling that she had done something wrong, she might've accdently sat in the spot where thst girl usually sits and it might've annoyed her a bit. Laura felt a little guilty. "Am i sitting in your spot?" Laura asked in a kind manor, she didn't want to annoy the girl further. She had already been inconsiderate enough to take that girl's spot and if she was rude now then it would be worse.

Laura's thoughts changed however, the girl raised smiled at her and Laura kindly smiled back. The girl must not be annoyed at Laura if she had smiled at her. It was confusing, Laura had no idea why the girl wasn't talking to her and she knew now thst it wasn't because of something as small as taking her spot. Laura felt a puzzled look enter her face, she wanted to know. The girl took Laura's book and atarted to read it, Laura didn't mind. When the girl pointed to a golden glittery tail, Laura gasped. She had been talking to a marmaid, Laura had never talked to a mermaid before. She was shocked, a mermaid was next to her. She was sitting next to a mermaid. Laura just sat there staring at the marmaid's tail in shock.

The Mermaid giggeled before handing the girls book back, she coldn't talk to her which was annoying her greatly but she made the best of the situation. Rain had heard of a thing called sign language that people do, she wondered if she learnt it then they could all understand her. The only problem was she had no idea what sign language was, Did you hold up pictures?.

Rain leaned back and lifted up her tail, it glittered in the sunlight, it felt so awkward holding her tail up like this so she sat it back down and smile at the girl, Rain was curious if the Girl wanted to swim, she was much more graceful in the water. Rain began to wonder if she knew of the bubble head charm so she could stay underwater with Rain, but ofcourse she couldn't ask her. not above water.

Rain grabbed the girls hand with hers which was just like a normal humans the only difference between her and the witches and wizards was that she had a tail and couldn't speak above water, Rain often wondered if she could get some sort of wheelchair and hide her tail under some cloth and get wheeled around the school. it would make her lifetime.
Rain rolled onto her stomach and lifted up her tail again smiling as she gently tugged her arm, she wanted her to come in the water with her. Rain turned around carefully before she started to drag herself down the beach, the sand under her scales of her tail was an odd feeling it felt to compacted and it wasn't entirely comfortable but she would be in the water soon so it was fine. Rain looked over her shoulder and pointed to the water for the girl to follow before dragging herself further down to the waters edge, once rain was at the edge of the water she looked back at the girl to see if she was coming.
The Mermaid pulled herself into the shallows, the water wasn't as cold as others would expect, it was slightly warm because of the sun, Rain turned around and looked at the girl smiling.

After the mermaid handed Laura's book back, Laura looked back at her, the last thing she expected was for a mermaid to be talking to her. Well, talking as much as a mermaid could. Laura didn't know much about mermaids but she did know one thing. They couldn't speak out of water. Seeing the glimmering golden tail, explained everything, as much as it could with her knowledge about magical creatures. Laura didn't know much and hanging out with a mermaid would be the perfect thing to do instead of studying, it was the perfect excuse. As the mermaid held up her glimmering tail, Laura was in awe at how beautiful it was. She had never met a mermaid before and this was an experience like no other, she wanted to hear the mermaid speak, Laura could tell the mermaid was nice, due to her smiling and giggling. Laura looked back at the mermaid and smiled back.

As the mermaid tugged on Laura's hand, she knew that the mermaid wanted Laura to go into the lake with her. Laura didn't have anything to change into but it would be relaxing and she didn't care at all about walking around the castle in wet clothes. Laura watched the beautiful shimmering tail as the mermaid dragged herself back in the direction of the lake. Laura realised that the mermaid was the one making the curious noises. Laura let out a sigh, it was good to know that it was just a mermaid and nothing that was going to hurt her. Leavingher bag and books at the tree, Laura followed the mermaid and when she got to the edge of the water, Laura took off her shoes and dipped her feet into the water. It wasn't as cold as she thought but she was still a little hesitant to go in. Laura looked at the mermaid, with an unsure look on her face she was a little scared about going in.

Rain looked at the girl who was following her into the Water, she noticed the girl being hesitant and she smiled, lifting up her tail so that the water ran off it, the girl had to be curious by now.
Rain pulled on the girls Ankle before pushing her self backwards into the deeper parts of the lake, Rain signalled with her hand for the girl to follow before dissapearing under the surface, Rain swam gracefully under the water before appearing 3 metres away from the shore line.

Rain signaled to the girl again, she had to come out, would she really miss the adventure.

Feeling a little curious about the water and what swimming with a mermaid would be like, Laura walked knee deep in the water, it was pleasant and she liked how the water felt on her skin. Usually at this time in the morning, the water would be cold, that morning it wasn't, it was actually pretty warm. Laura breathed out and looked at the mermaid, she pulled on Laura's ankle and disappeared under the silky surface of the water. Laura looked rapidly around for her, but she couldn't find her. Laura wasn't worried though, the mermaid was built to swim, she wouldn't drown. Laura chuckled quietly to herself before the mermaid appeared what looked like three meters away from the shore, it would be a lot deeper there and Laura knew it. She walked until she was waist deep and when the mermaid signalled for her to go deeper, Laura dived in. She wasn't really a swimming kind of person but she knew how to swim. She swam to the mermaid, under the surface of the wram morning water and smiled when she appeared next to the mermaid. "What are we going to do now?" Laura asked as she ran a hand through her wet hair. She tredded the water and looked at the mermaid smiling, waiting for an answer.

Rain watch the girl appear before her and she smiled and pointed down under the water and dissapeared under the surface. Rain waited for the girl to follow her under the water before she could talk, she knew the girl wouldn't be able to stay for long but she could try.
'Hello my Name's Rain' She said in a sweet gentle melodic voice 'How long can you hold your breath, are you a good swimmer, by your look i don't think you've seen a mermaid before, do you know anything about mermaids?, what was that book you were reading, was it for leasure or was it for study, do you study, what grade are you in, do you reckon you could get me in the castle, whats it like to walk, can you find a spell to make me walk, can i go to class with you one day, do you reckon they'd let a mermaid study at hogwarts, i have mermaid powers and im sure i could weild a wand, whats your wand like...' Rain powered through questions because she knew that the girl didn't have enough time to hold her breath. Rain stopped or a moment, and waited for an answer.

It was weird for Laura, the way the mermaid went underwater. Laura followed her though, she could hear the mermaids voice now. It was so surreal and unusual to her to even be near a mermaid, let alone hear one talk. Laura was a little astonished by all the questions that the mermaid named Rain was asking her at once. There were a few to many to follow properly, Laura could only make out two of the questions. She only heard the first two questions that Rain had asked her. Laura couldn't talk underwater so she had to go above water to talk to Rain. She surfaced and looked down at the water and said "Um, i don't know how long i can hold my breath and i can swim, i just don't do it often." Laura shrugged, it was true. "Can you please ask one question at a time? I did'nt quite get most of what you asked." Laura exclaimed before going back under the water. Laura looked at Rain and waited expectantly for a reply.

Rain followed the girl up to the surface and listened before understanding and going under water again so she can continue to ask questions.
Rain paused for a moment to think of one of the many questions to ask and picked the most important three 'I'll ask you Three, What was the book you were reading? Do you reckon i could get into the Castle, Can i go to class with you one day?' she Asked slowly before swimming up so that The girl could breathe.

Rain found ita bit difficult to keep herself above water it was more of an awkward wriggle for her but she had gotten used to it.

Rain was asking Laura a few questions at one, luckily, she was able to actually understand now. Even though it was still a few too many questions. When Laura surfaced again, she knew she had to reply, she thought about it to herself for a minute, trying to think of a way to answer all of the questions in one sentence. It was easy but Laura wanted to be as kind as possible to Rain, she didn't know what the mermaid was capable of. "I was reading a book about Defence Against the Dark Arts. It's a subject at my school." Laura said kindly, she was surprised that Rain actually cared about her book. It wasn't interesting at all, it was just a boring schoolbook. Laura's attempt to answer all of Rain's questions in one sentence had failed. However, Laura didn't mind this one bit. "I don't think you would be able to get in yet alone be allowed to go to class with me. Sorry." Laura said with a sweet smile, she didn't want to hurt Rain's feelings by saying no but she wasn't going to lie and get the mermaid's hopes up, plus, she looked really excited about going to the castle. Laura went back underneath the water to hear Rain's reply.
