- Ebony Wand 15" - Dragon's Heartstring Core
It was a warm summer's afternoon and Bruin Dumbledez, Head Boy of Hogwarts New Zealand, was making a rare public appearance. The 7th Year Gryffindor had made himself relatively scarce over the past few weeks, surprised at how easy it was to avoid interaction with others when one had their own dorm room, didn't have to worry about exams, and was one of the few boys at the school with access to the Brotherhood of Magic's clubhouse, the Wizard's Retreat. Bruin had even avoided the Great Hall at most meal times, missing the latest news about him in the most recent Gossip Magazine, although even if he had seen it he probably would have ignored it. Bruin simply didn't want to care what others thought about him at the moment.
Bruin looked out over the glistening lake wondering why he was in such a funk while the majority of the rest of the student body was writing exams and stressing about the holidays. His Quidditch team looked solid, his marks remained excellent, and he had a whole world of possibilities and opportunities opening up to him in the year's ahead. However, the last term had been full of little surprises and upsets and Bruin could not shake the feeling that his life was not where he wanted it to be, that it was missing something.
Bruin toyed with his wand, twirling it between his fingers, and began thinking about his inability to generate a Patronus, particularly irked by how effortless it had seemed for James Potter to have conjured one and the steady progress that Jaken had made in comparison to his own disappointing results. Over the past seven years, Bruin had found himself to be a natural for many spells and charms and through hard work and perseverence had managed to become skilled in those that proved more challenging. He had even managed to complete the difficult training that accompanied becoming an Animagus, although he wondered more and more if the effort had been worth it. He was certainly powerful and impressive in his bear form, but what good was it being a bear? They were basically an animal that the rest of the human race considered to be a threat or a nuisance. Is this how he would be judged?
Bruin had hoped that his 7th year would bring success, friendship, and clarity about his future. He had even dared to hope that he might find something more, but just like the bear pendant that he had worked so hard on for Andy this now appeared to be lost. He touched the matching pendant for a moment and realized that he had been such a fool for even entertaining such ideas and turned his attention back to his wand. He thought about practicing the Patronus Charm again and tried to recall a time when he had been truly happy, a task which should have been easy for him given his relatively charmed existence to this point in his life, but seemed almost an impossibility given his present frame of mind.
Expecto Patronum!
A thin wisp of silver mist puffed from his wand and quickly disappeared in the summer breeze and Bruin tossed his wand to the ground in front of him. For some reason, he had expected a large bear to burst forth and lumber into the woods, never to be seen again. He wondered what would happen if he simply did this himself. Would anyone really miss him? He hadn't exactly been a good friend to anyone recently and those he considered to be his best friends seemed quite capable of moving on without him, in fact, one in particular had made it clear to him that she was quite determined to get over him and he was doing everything in his power to accommodate her request.
