The Basics

Character's Name: Peregrine Minerva Piper

Character's Birthdate: 28 February 2052

Hometown: Born in Birmingham, England, but moved to New Zealand when she was about eight.

Blood Status: Mixed-blood

Wand: Straight 10 Inch Flexible Oak Wand with Dragon Heartstring Core
Oak - a reliable wood that can see its wielder through any challenge.
Dragon Heartstring - learns spells with ease, but contains greater power the wielder must be prepared to handle.

Hogwarts House: Gryffindor
"Everyone belongs somewhere that's for sure. For you, the choice is tricky, you would manage just fine, just about anywhere...but, yes...I see where you would manage the best...Gryffindor!"

Appearance

Hair: Brown, sits a little below her shoulders. She doesn't really know how to style it or anything like that, she just brushes it and ties it into a plain ponytail for class.

Eyes: Brown, they get a bit red when she stays up too late reading.

Height: About average height, slightly on the taller side of average but not tall.

Style: Op-shop and out of season chic. She's not on the cutting edge of fashion by any means, she has a few basic outfits and reliable items of clothing so she's not horribly out of style but she's never in vogue.

Other Distinguishing Features: She's got a birthmark on her left knee - it's a splodge of pigmentation that she wonders if she should try to read like tea leaves in divination.

A Little Deeper

Personality: Peregrine is bright, optimistic and enthusiastic. She has some slightly odd interests (big scary magical creatures mostly) but like many other young witches she likes reading, unicorns, Quidditch, boys... She gets excitable about the things she likes although she is very easily deterred and feels like she needs to contain herself if it's seen as something negative. She'll talk herself down and brush it off out of shame and not wanting to be seen as too silly and childish. It doesn't help that she's the eldest daughter and gets expected to be more mature and be a good role model to her brother. She's sensible and responsible, when she needs to step up she's always someone who can be relied on. She's not silly, she does understand a lot of serious adult things for someone so young, but she is still a kid. She does, however, have an extremely bad temper. Nobody has really seen it in full flight, but as she bottles things up the timer to eruption seems to count down...

History: Peregrine was born in the UK to Ministry worker parents and had a fairly uneventful early life. Grew up in a wizarding community, became a big sister a little before she was two. Her father always seemed a bit distant, but she didn't really think much of it given how young she was. But eventually the relationship between her parents broke down, and not long after her mother was in a horrible accident at work that left her comatose for a little while. It was touch and go for a bit, with many hours spent sitting in St Mungo's hall chairs, many reassurances given to Percy that 'mum's going to be okay, promise, we just have to be really good for her so she doesn't get upset with us when she wakes up', and many politely recited responses to concerned adults. Thankfully, her mother pulled through and recovered without any long lasting issues, although she couldn't work in her previous job as a hit witch. It was her uncle who suggested they have a bit of a change in scenery and move to New Zealand, as he had some opportunities there and it would be good for all of them if they did.

So when Peregrine was eight she moved across the world to live in a different magical community. Her life was a little less luxurious than it was before - it wasn't exactly a life of great luxury but she was well aware of the fact that they were a little more financially strained, and often was required to be the responsible and understanding child who accepted sometimes she just had to go without (though she couldn't help but notice this wasn't required of her brother nearly as much). Still, people liked when she was sensible and well behaved and would call her such a polite, nice girl! She picked up new hobbies, gaining more interest in scary magical creatures, writing stories and escaping into books more, and joined the scouts with her brother before finally getting her Hogwarts letter. She couldn't get on the train fast enough.

Family:
Mother - Diana Thornton
Ex-hit witch, childcare worker, and 'boy mom'. Loves her two children dearly, though she does tend to connect more easily with her son than her daughter. Surprising, as they're both the eldest of two. Perhaps just takes Peregrine's ability to be sensible and do what she's told for granted. Perhaps Peregrine not feeling like she can speak up and have an earnest conversation with her without it being complaining or her losing her temper doesn't help. Despite this, she does love her daughter and would do anything to protect her if push came to shove. Was sorted in to Gryffindor, just like Peregrine, and was a bright student (who may have gotten into a bit of trouble every now and then, but certainly achieved highly). Had a long on-again off-again relationship with one of her classmates which firmly went to off-again when she got into a relationship with an older co-worker at the Ministry, and after her injury scare and relationship breakdown has avoided romantic entanglements to focus on her children.

Father - Lionel Piper
Worked in the department of law enforcement with Diana when they met and got together very quickly. Peregrine was born very early in their relationship, Percy not long after. A little distant, being about fifteen years older than Diana, and not much of an involved father - though he still writes and sends money on birthdays and Christmas. Even more emotionally distant from Peregrine - he at least has a little more cordiality for Percy. Was in Slytherin, for what it's worth.

Actual Father - Serenoa Earnshaw
The other side of the on-again off-again relationship. He was in Hufflepuff in the same year as Diana, and the two of them got into all sorts of trouble together. Diana was pregnant with Peregrine before she actually properly started seeing Lionel, and everyone was kind of aware of it when Peregrine was born. Diana didn't want to actually make things more complicated than they were, and Lionel was listed as her father on the birth certificate. Noah had moved to New Zealand and started working in the ministry there, not really wanting to work with his ex girlfriend and her new partner (took the breakup well, clearly). He's invested in trying to make muggleborns feel welcome in the magical world and the two worlds working smoothly alongside each other, and while he seems rather laconic and can miss detail he's a hard worker who gets things done. He didn't get to meet Peregrine face to face until she was a bit older but immediately recognised that she was his daughter and was struck by paternal affection. He knows he can't really go throwing Peregrine's life into more disarray - as Diana insisted, 'that girl has already gone through so much, don't add more complication on top of it' but he knows that she's smart enough to have probably figured it out.

Brother - Percival (Percy) Nero Piper
Obnoxious, annoying, far less concerned with propriety than Peregrine is...but he's her brother and she loves him. For his part, he adores his big sister even if he thinks she's a bit boring when she does her mum voice and tries to tell him off. He's really into space and the idea of extraterrestrial life. Aliens probably have amazing magic. He's a little bit babied by his family, even by Peregrine unintentionally, but he's a lot more perceptive and intelligent than one might expect. He can be a bit spoiled and expects things to go his way, and can be pushy and demanding, but it's something he'll (hopefully) grow out of.

Uncle - Gaius Thornton
Has been an important part of her life, especially in more recent years. He's the more sensible sibling, although perhaps a bit unsensibly caustic and difficult. He was in Ravenclaw, and wanted to be a playwright. Unfortunately, he felt his writing was never good enough - indeed, some of his early works were derided - and decided to be a critic instead, feeling much safer on that side of things rather than putting anything out into the world. He manages Scrivenshafts since freelancing doesn't exactly pay all the bills and is very particular. He and Peregrine get along wonderfully.
