The first letter came on a Sunday afternoon ...​

Dear Shalamar,

I hope you had a nice day when we met. I wanted to thank you for the time you spent with me, even if it was just for a little bit (I was really, really bored!). Maybe you won't mind getting a letter from me, at least I hope you don't. Perhaps you have a boyfriend who wouldn't think kindly of you receiving post from another boy. Please assure him (if your having a boyfriend is indeed the case) that I have no other intentions than what I display now; an earnest wish to get to know you better, and to be your friend. You were very kind to me and had the most fascinating things to say about dragons. I daresay you have more to say about a lot of things, and these I want to know. Since our conversation, I have confirmed that the dragon I was thinking of was a Swedish Short-Snout. I've even procured a dropped scale; it's beautiful, like mother-of-pearl. Here it is attached to the letter for you. I think the young dragon that attacked me is still alive and roaming the mountains behind my house, since that was where I found this one. There are more around and about, so please consider this one a gift.

I was so busy talking about dragons that I forgot to ask about you! I'm very sorry about that; as I said, I do have a wish to know you more. But it's only fair that I offer you a little about myself in return, so here it is. Hi, I'm Ramses Teodov.

I'm sixteen years old and I attend Durmstrang. Maybe you go to Hogwarts, Beauxbatons? I have a keen interest in dragons, but also all creatures, magical and non-magical alike. My father has a house in Bulgaria and my mother a house in England. During school time we live in Bulgaria and rent out mother's house all year, but on the holidays we all stay at a house in New Zealand. My mother is Miriac Teodov but her maiden name is Yearling; I mention this because my cousin, Artemis, goes to your school (or at least I believe it's your school). Perhaps you know her? If you don't, maybe you could seek her out. She'll look like a first year and is very fond of magical creatures, too. She's a dear.

Father's trying to drag me on a trip down the river now, so I'll finish the letter here. I hope you will write back!

Dear Ramses,

Your letter surprised me on so many levels it's hard to know where to begin. Firstly no I do not mind you writing, in fact I was thrilled. Secondly, no I do not have a boyfriend who would be upset. (I don't do so good in the boy friend department - think I am too serious for many) Thirdly ... I do attend Hogwarts and I do know Artemis; in fact Artemis Blackmore-Yearling is my dearest best friend in the entire universe and she actually came with me on one of our school vacations to Mongolia to help with my dragon training. What a small world this is!

I can't wait to tell her that I met you.
I also hope that it was not because of me that you were so bored that day. You did seem to emphasis your boredom factor. Thank you so much for the gift, I feel bad that I have nothing to give you in return but I will find something I am sure. I can't tell you how happy I am that you decided to write to me. I would hate to burst your bubble as to how fascinating you think I am. I did have a boyfriend and he did not think my penchant for studying and thirst for knowledge very exciting at all, least of all fascinating. That is now why I am single ... he was my first and most likely my last boyfriend. Boys simply don't seem to think of me as girlfriend material.

How was your trip on the river with your father?
Do you have a large family like Artemis? I have never had a friend that I could write letters too, so I will thoroughly enjoy this. What is Durmstrang like?
I had a lovely time with you as well that day, I just wish that it was longer and I could have gotten to know you better.
