The Basics

Character's Name: Miranda Sophia Dawes
Miranda - from Shakespeare's 'The Tempest', named by her father (though he does not strive to be like Prospero, even if he would quietly think of her mother as villainous as Caliban!)
Sophia - for the Greek idealogy of wisdom, this name was chosen by her mother
Dawes - variant of 'Daw', of miscellaneous descent. Mostly used in Anglo-Saxon countries, specifically England, the USA, Canada and Australia. OOC the writer took it from the classic Australian novel For The Term Of His Natural Life and the protagonist, Rufus Dawes.

Character's Birthdate: 28 May 2049. Miranda is a Gemini - sociable, friendly, talkative, often a little flighty.

Hometown: Born in England, grew up in Cornwall, now lives in Melbourne, Australia, where her father works as a university lecturer.

Blood Status: Mixed blood - both her parents are magical. Her father is muggle-born.

Wand: Knotted 14 Inch Flexible Alder Wand with Meteorite Dust Core
Knotted - earthy, traditional and close to nature.
14" - a little longer, slightly more uncommon and not easily forgotten.
Flexible - not easily broken, performs under strain with little effort (as long as the wielder is up to it)
Alder - best wielded by those who are kind and helpful, can be a loyal and trusted helper if wielded correctly.
Meteorite Dust - works well for those who adapt easily to their surroundings while maintaining their own personalities. Useful in divination work.

Educated At: Hogwarts New Zealand (commenced 2060).

House: "Thank you! I am very glad you liked it. But this shouldn't be about how great I am, but about how great you are, and where this greatness will take you. To me, there is only one choice...Ravenclaw,"
Seemingly, her intelligence and curiosity outweighs the traits that may have seen her in a house like Gryffindor or Hufflepuff. Especially her enjoyment of puzzles and problem solving, and her desire to learn things about magic and about the people around her.

Appearance

Hair: Dark hair that is inclined to get curly or at least very wavy. She takes a lot after her mother.

Eyes: Dark brown.

Height: 4'7" - a little above average height for her age (but not by much).

Style: Mostly wears things that are comfy and easy to move in, she's not that fashionable. Neither of her parents have great salaries to go off (being academics and teachers) of so she doesn't exactly have the money to spend on high fashion as it is, but she doesn't resent it, just having a few casual things that are built to last.

Other Distinguishing Features: She's quick to smile and often has ink-stains on her right hand. Her accent is a little odd, being mostly Australian but with certain words spoken a little more in an English accent - and probably picking up some kiwi intonations while at school.

A Little Deeper

Personality: Miranda is a pretty cheerful sort of person, all things considered. Though it's just her and her dad mostly she doesn't mind too much (besides a little resentment to her mother). She doesn't take out her resentment on anyone else though and is earnest and upfront. She's good at writing, not very good at maths, though she does try. She's happy to help people with the former, though, especially if they can help her out with the latter. She likes puzzles and problem solving, even if maths puzzles take her a bit longer than she would like. Miranda's responsible, but likes to have a bit of fun with friends as long as it's not hurting anyone. She's optimistic and doesn't see the point in bringing anyone down, preferring to offer compliments instead of criticisms. She can get self-conscious and upset and angry if anyone tries to bring her down, though, hence trying to pre-empt it by just being nice. She's secretly a little worried about being forgotten or replaced while she's away at school, even though she knows that's childish of her. She's a bit burned by her mother and doesn't want to end up like her, even though she had more in common with her than she'd like to admit.

Favourite Subject: She won't admit it out loud, but History. English was her favourite subject at muggle school, but at Hogwarts either History or Defence Against the Dark Arts. There's very little she doesn't like, though, she's pretty open minded.

Least Favourite Subject: Potions. Not that she doesn't find it interesting, but the measuring and precision is hard. At muggle school, it was easily maths - numbers and quick calculations just don't come easily to her. Likely she won't be picking Arithmancy.

Boggart: Her father slumped over his desk and unresponsive - she's terrified of something happening to him, especially when she's at school and has no idea and can't help him. Alternatively a mirror, where instead of seeing her own reflection she sees her mother's face.

Patronus: tba, but most likely some kind of dog like a Labrador or Golden Retriever. Friendly and energetic, but protective and loyal.

Amortentia: Frying garlic and onion, freshly mown grass and vanilla.

Special Talents/Abilities: None specifically, though she is actually pretty good at public speaking, having done some speech and drama classes and having been encouraged by her lecturer father. She doesn't get nervous in front of a crowd (and if she does, she hides it very well).

Hobbies: Crosswords and brain teasers, sports (mostly muggle though she wouldn't mind trying Quidditch casually), reading. She likes to do a bit of her own writing though she's only a young girl so it's very simplistic. She wrote a mini play once and her dad was absolutely thrilled.

History: Miranda was born in England in mid-2049, right on the verge of English summer. Her mother was not in a position to take care of her, though, and left when she was a few months old deciding it was for the best. Miranda grew up with her father and her father's muggle relatives, before they decided to move to Australia when she was about six - her father had a good opportunity for teaching there, and it meant Miranda could have some more connection with her mother if she wanted to. She attended a muggle school in Melbourne for a few years, though her father didn't make a big secret of magic being part of her life. She tended to sit in on her father's lectures though if she was home sick from school/when he taught night classes. While Miranda liked her muggle school, she knew she'd have to go to magic school eventually, which she looked forward to (though knew her dad would keep her up with her muggle studying, especially for literature) - even if she didn't look forward to being with her mother instead of her father for most of the year.

Family:
Father: Stephen Dawes, lecturer in English literature. Muggleborn, attended Hogwarts in Scotland where he was sorted into Hufflepuff. He didn't necessarily excel in magic, preferring the written word, but he scraped through his NEWTs and went into studying more muggle literature, which he did much better with. He is gentle and cheerful, generally good natured and perhaps a little lacking in backbone. Ironically it was while studying and not at Hogwarts where he really got to know his future girlfriend and mother of his child, being
Mother: Gabrielle Moncrieffe, professor of History of Magic at Hogwarts New Zealand. She was a Ravenclaw at Hogwarts in Scotland, and much less approachable. She was a prefect who did very well in her NEWTs, particularly in Ancient Runes and History of Magic (though only barely passed Transfiguration). She and Stephen dated for a while, but she wasn't ready to really commit to a relationship even when she became pregnant, and knew she was not going to be in a position to be a mother and provide the appropriate level of care to her daughter, thus leaving Miranda with Stephen and going off to try and pull herself together. She feels very ashamed that she's never really been a mother to Miranda, although she has had minimal contact with her she's avoided it a lot out of guilt. Stephen is clearly more hurt by it while Miranda is a little more angry, but both of them try and hold it back for each other's sake.
