Full Name: Maria Selwyn
-
Date of Birth: 25th May
-
Current Age: 11
-
Basic Appearance: Maria is quite short, with a thin body and small face often fixed into a haughty scowl. Her hair is dark brown and wavy. It falls to her waist and is prone to tangling, especially at the tips. She has a short fringe and dark blue eyes. Maria normally wears blouses and poofy skirts, chosen by her father. It's fairly conservative but she likes to believe that it makes her appear elegant, sophisticated and most importantly, grown up. Her family isn't particularly rich, so a few of her clothes are quite shabby and old. She rarely wears them in public.
-
Personality: At first glance, Maria appears rude and arrogant, obsessed with her 'pure-blood' status. Maria is of the opinion that claiming she is pureblood will make people automatically like her. It rarely does. She tends to be very outspoken and self-important in conversations, talking over others and pushing forward her own opinion. . She pretends to act superior because she thinks it will get her respect, and often talks badly about muggles in order to get the approval of others. Truth be told, Maria doesn't know how to talk to people. She grew up having to hide her wizarding heritage from other children and this caused her to hang back from joining groups, because she was afraid that they would find out. After her one friend, a fellow half-blood, moved away, she began to be bullied at the school after she began imitating her father's often haughty attitude. Because she doesn't know how to talk to them, she has developed a mindset that muggles are not worth speaking to. Because of this, she is very much looking forward to Hogwarts, where she believes she'll be able to talk to people more easily.
-
Family: Her father is Edmund Selwyn, a member of the Pure-blood Selwyn Family. He is very polite and wellmannered, but can be quite pressuring about what he wants his daughter to achieve and do. Her mother is Gloria Wood, a muggle who currently works as a veterinarian in a local practise. Gloria met Edmund while they were both travelling abroad in New Zealand and they decided to move there once they had married. Gloria was understandably shocked by her husband's talents, but became accepting once she learnt she'd no longer have to do the ironing by hand.
Pets: She once owned a pygmypuff. It came to a nasty end in a newly installed washing machine when it was mistaken for a sock. Her father owns a pet Kneazle. While her mother was initially adverse to the idea, she has convinced her father to allow her to get a pet bat, whom she has named Seth.
-
Area of Residence: She was born in England and her parents moved to New Zealand when she was two.
-
Blood Status: Halfblood, but likes to pretend that she are pure-blood.
-
Heritage: Maria can trace her heritage back to England and the Selwyn family. Her father, Edmund Selwyn, is English and is a member of the Selwyn family, a Pure-blood family going back many generations. Her mother, Gloria Wood, is English, from the South-East, and a muggle. Due to this, the Selwyn family cut off her father from the family tree.
-
Special Abilities: None
-
Interests or Hobbies: Maria likes to read about anything. She enjoys looking at the differences between Muggle and Wizarding technology (often proclaiming that wizarding technology is superior) and she also enjoys studying animals.
-
Strengths:
-
Weaknesses:
-
Describe your character in three words: Arrogant, lonely, approval seeking
Favourite place to be: Her favourite place is in her room, reading a good book. She doesn't like going outside where there are muggles, as she simply does not know what to say to them.
-
Friends: Due to her self-important and insulting attitude, she has no friends. As a child, she was friends with a small girl who lived down the road, but the friend moved away when they turned eight. Maria doesn't know anyone else who is going to Hogwarts as of this posting. This girl was a member of a pureblood family, and she began to idolise Maria when she found out she was a Selwyn. Maria allowed her to continue to think that she was a pureblood Selwyn and has grown a complex that people will like her if they think she is a pureblood.
-
Hogwarts House: She hopes to be in Slytherin, because she has been told by her pureblood friend that it is the best house, that the best wizards get into it.
-
Hogwarts Hopes and Ambitions:
Obviously, she wants to achieve high grades in all her subjects. She is most interested in transfiguration and dreams of becoming an animagus and taking to the sky. It has yet to occur to her that her animagus might not be a being that can fly.
-
Best school subjects:
Her favourite subjects will likely initially be Herbology and Potions. She'll enjoy the task of meticulously taking care of a plant as well as preparing a potion. However, the one she will enjoy the most will probably be muggle studies, investigating the differences between wizards and muggles.
-
Worst school subjects:
Once she realises that her dreams of transforming animals from objects are a little farfetched, the difficulty of transfiguration will likely leave her frustrated and undermotivated.
-
Extracurricular Activities:
She'll want to, by pressure of her father, attempt to join the Quidditch team. She's more likely to enjoy helping out in the owlery.
-
Plans for your future:
She plans to make friends, using her status as a 'Pure-blood' to swoon her fellow Slytherin companions. Maria also wants to succeed at school and get a post in the ministry.
-
Your Boggart: Her biggest fear is that people at Hogwarts will discover she isn't a pureblood and will hate her, so her boggart would be the image of her muggle mother.
-
Mirror of Erised: Surrounded by a group of students, with her father watching on in pride.

A page from your diary:
To my Diary,
Daddy insisted that I go outside and play with some of the local children today. I don't see why I should, when I shall be whisked off to Hogwarts any day now. Why Daddy thinks I need to hang around with muggles, I don't know. But I didn't want to disappoint him, so as asked I went outside and hung out in the park. A couple of girls were there, but they didn't try to talk to me. Laughing and giggling about something unimportant. After a while, they came and sat down on the same bench as me, though they still didn't talk to me. I overheard part of their conversation though, and chipped in to inform them that it was rude to ignore someone sat on a bench and that they should make an effort to include me. After all, I am a Selwyn. For some reason, that annoyed them and they got up and left. Muggles are so stupid. I sat by myself for half an hour before I went home. I told Daddy I'd talked to a couple of muggles and he seemed pleased. He asked me if I'd made friends with them and I replied 'No, of course not. Why would I be friends with muggles?' Daddy looked disappointed at that.He told me not to say things like that around Mother. I hate it when Daddy is disappointed.
But it's true isn't it? I don't need to talk to Muggles. At hogwarts, I'll be able to talk to other Wizards. Other Pure-bloods, of my own status. I don't need any muggle friends.
