History:
Shirley and Henry met completely by accident. Both were muggle born. Both were in New Zealand at the same time but for completely different reasons. Henry had a formal education in Ilvermorny and had moved to New Zealand and bought a plant farm. Shirley had never had a formal education because at the time she was born there was a war on and her name got lost in the eather. There were no local schools for her to attend and as a muggle born it was difficult for anything to be done.
With some luck, her parents were not scared of her and so she was allowed to cultivate her magic in some small way, though it was never as great as it could have been and much of what she learned was from muggle written texts.
When she met Henry - randomly one day at the park, neither of them knew what the other was. So it was a great joke to them when four months later, Henry confessed his biggest secret only to find his new girlfriend had the same secret.
They were married only a year later and Shirley happily moved with him to his farm. As a muggleborn, she was not used to all the ways magic worked and received something of an education from her now husband. Of course, they began working on their family straight away and a couple of years later in 2010 - Lou was born. They were overjoyed and they were so grateful to have someone who could help with the farm as he grew.
Three years later, a sister was born - Bettie, and she was perfect.
As parents, Shirley was left mostly to the raising of the children as Henry was always so busy establishing their farm. The most time he spent with the children was when he was teaching Lou how to look after the plants, but he wasn’t much of a talker. Shirley had been the emotional one in the relationship and she spent most of her time with Bettie who was brought up learning all the ins and outs of running the farm.
Ten years later, Shirley discovered that she was pregnant again and gave birth to Reece not long after Lou's 10th birthday. It was decided that Lou would not attend school as they were much too busy with the farm but once it came time for Bettie to attend, they shipped her off happily and it was the same for Reece.
Lou felt resentment towards his life at this stage, and at 14, when Bettie was sent to school and he discovered Reece would be as well, Lou ran away from the farm. He was sure that aside from the obvious farm work he wasn't doing, he wouldn't be missed. He lasted two months on his own before his father found him. Lou was never really able to explain properly why he ran away, having inherited his father's lack for words and trouble for expressing his emotions. He was grounded for the entire summer after that.
Bettie and Henry taught Lou as much as they could collectively, enough for him to survive as they expected he would be on the farm always, so he had no need of learning. Whenever Bettie returned home, she taught Lou all that she could, but Reece was never as involved. By the time he’d started school, Bettie and Lou already had something of a rhythm.
Lou grew up and stayed on the farm, seeing no other future for himself. Bettie returned, but Reece left. He didn’t want a life working the farm like his siblings.
Henry died not long after. Shirley was devastated. And soon after that, they lost Reece as well. Shirley had tried to warn Reece of what could happen should he love a muggle, but he was stubborn and in love and he refused to listen.
Shirley still holds a grudge to mary lou’s mother for her hand in part of her son’s death. Shirley gave up control of the farm to her children and traveled a little before settling down somewhere close by.
Henry was a strict man. He punished any wrongdoing but rewarded any behavior he liked. However, he never much thought about what his children wanted. Both he and Shirley are guilty of expecting certain things and not asking what their children wanted. Henry loved his children but didn’t always know how to show it.
When Lou was 19, he met a girl in town. Her name was Justine Robinson. She was very pretty, with long blond hair, fair skin, and baby blue eyes. She was sweet, and kind to Lou, and for a year he was smitten by her. He was shy, not wanting to rush things as he slowly courted and grew to know her. He attempted to kiss her a few times, but she always turned away from him. He didn't mind, thinking their relationship was worth waiting, and respecting her boundaries. Lou was dismayed when on the eve of their anniversary, she never appeared for their date. He went to her house the next day, having waited until early morning, standing in the rain. His heart was broken when he learned that she had left town to study and live in France, having left without so much as a goodbye.
Lou's life since has been fairly unremarkable- work the farm, go to town for supplies, have Bettie write to Mother. The only pleasures he held for himself were the books he would slowly read, and the piano he liked to play.
There was one more surprise to be had, however, as his brother's daughter was dropped unceremoniously at the farm with them. Lou was shocked by Mary's arrival, unsure of how to deal with a child when he had never even really been one himself. He's tried in his own clumsy way, buying her little gifts and trying to show her what he knows and making sure she can survive on her own when she leaves the farm. But Bettie- she ignores the childs existence completely, pretending she doesn't exist.
Lou was relieved when his mother learned of Mary's existence, as he considered his mother better for Mary than he was. He's always struggled with his relationship with her, thinking he has nothing to offer her. He's a bit jealous that she, too, has gone to school, but is relieved she will have a life outside of the farm.
Recently, another interesting development has occurred, in the form of a wondering Potioneer that put in an order with Bettie for ingredients. However, Erik Drage seems content to come to the farm whenever Bettie isn't around and pester Lou...
