Jeremy sat at a table at the very back of the library, writing. He'd been there for hours ever since he'd finished his dinner. The house elves had prepared an awesome stew that day and Jeremy was nice and sated as he sat working on a ridiculously long Herbology assignment. He wasn't sure that it needed to be that long, but he hadn't been paying attention when Professor Blaze had assigned the homework so he figured more would be better. As the sun began to set in the library, Jeremy recalled another assignment that he needed to work on. He could easily just turn on the lamp that he had at his desk but that certainly wouldn't fulfill the professor's assignment and Professor Styx scared him enough that he had the feeling the man would know whether the students had made any attempt at the spell.
Taking out his wand and placing it on his desk, Jeremy closed his eyes and took several deep breaths. He'd heard it was a good relaxation technique from his sister. It hardly ever worked for him but he was willing to try anything. Opening his blue eyes, he laid them on the wand and tried to will it to successfully perform the Lumos spell. He spent nearly 10 minutes attempting to concentrate but something, everything was able to distract him. First, it was the librarian walking past to ensure that people were being quiet. The noise she made was outrageous. Next, it was a group of giggling second year girls heading to a corner table. He felt like cursing them. Then, the last straw was the dude who'd chosen to look for a book right behind him. He sat back in his chair, crossing his arms and looking cross as he waited for the guy to finish. "Ok...time to do this" he said to himself as the guy left. His blue eyes narrowed in concentration, Jeremy attempted the non-verbal spell once more. He remained in the library for 30 minutes more, until curfew was coming and they were being kicked out. In all that time, Jeremy had not succeeded, though he would swear to anyone who asked that he'd seen a tiny glow emit from the tip of his wand. It had lasted only slightly longer than a millisecond so even he couldn't be sure.
Knowing that he would have a tough time proving he had even attempted the spell, Jeremy left the library, slightly depressed.
