***********

This was the second attempt at shopping for school supplies at Obsidian Harbour, the first had been an unmitigated disaster as Pixie had managed to get herself lost. In the big scheme of things, this wasn't the end of the world but her fathers reaction then and now was most certainly dictating that it was! For exactly one hour, thirty six minutes and forty something seconds he had actually attempted to put various animal collars on her before they left the house by the floo network, just so that she would not get lost again! The humiliation of it all, thankfully Barbara their housekeeper, a sixty year old spinster who doted on Pixie as if she were her own; clucked like a ferocious griffin and managed to persuade Con Cyclone that having his daughter on a leash was good in theory but the authorities would surely have something to say about it if anyone reported it.

He had relented and instead warned her that she was not to venture two inches away from him. Pixie had every intention of staying close by this time, mainly as he promised that if all went well and they managed to purchase what they needed to, he was going to take her on a tour of some of muggle London. She had tried to dress some bit accordingly but it was always difficult to fathom what mode of style muggles wore. Biding goodbye to Barbara, they entered the fire place together and stepped out in a side street. From there they walked at their leisure once again through the cobbled streets of Obsidian, her father making sure that Pixie had the supply list and a quill in hand to mark off what they had already purchased and what they still very much needed to obtain.

He had gotten an owl the size of a teapot the previous day for her and they had gotten her quills and ink pots and quite a few scrolls but other than that, everything else on their list would have to be purchased that day. She called out the books and clothes they would need, as well as the fact that she would need a wand and hinted at a broomstick, surely he would buy her one but her father seemed to purposefully ignore the hint and directed them both to Flourish and Blotts bookstore.

Once they had entered, he took the list from her and told her to stay 'IN' the store while he went and got her books. She sighed at first before turning around to look at the rows of shelves crammed with books, it was like being inside the library. Pixie smiled and managed to stop herself from hugging the nearest shelf of books. Casting a last glance to her father, she sauntered down on aisle and began browsing through the assortment of titles on display. This was most definitely a place she would love to get lost in!

Glad that she had been able to avoid apparating, Alana skipped alongside her mother in the happiest of moods. It wasn’t assured yet that she’d be able to attend Hogwarts New Zealand this year, but according to what her mother had informed her of, things were looking up. Alana was going to take it. She knew that she wouldn’t be able to begin shopping just yet, but she hoped that her letter for the school would arrive soon.

Alana knew better than to rush her mother when she was inside of a shop, but she was desperate to go see what the other children were doing. She so rarely was able to interact with children who didn’t bear a strong resemblance to herself. Not that her mother usually cared. She preferred that her Finch children stayed away from the sort of riff-raff that would corrupt them. Alana knew that her mother was right. There were plenty of children that were from the wrong sort of family. The sort of children that thought that muggle items were in some way superior to magical items. But, Alana felt that she had a good idea of who she should be associating with. She’d met Ivaylo on her first solo outing after all, and she knew that neither of her parents would doubt that he was just the sort of person she should be associating herself with.

Waiting for her mother to head to the counter, Alana took her chance. She took a deep breath and made her request to head to Flourish and Blotts. It was her mother’s next stop after all, and Alana couldn’t get into too much trouble with books. Whether she’d made a good argument or her mother was just very eager to haggle Alana would never know, but the woman did relent and send her off with a few sickles in the palm of her hand. Alana wasn’t much of a reader, but the chance to be alone was not to be missed so she quickly turned into the shop. She headed for the one section that did manage to keep her interest, the children’s fiction section. She searched quickly, spotting the latest book from a series she’d been reading about a young witch who was also a spy. Opening it to the first page, Alana began to slowly read, her lips moving along with the words.
