December 2064.
Georgina never expected to set foot in England again. Banishment at the age of eleven tended to leave a bad taste in the mouth. Aside from a handful of letters exchanged with her sister Matilda during her first year, contact with her family had been nonexistent for twenty-five years. That had changed a couple of weeks prior.
It was inevitable that one of her parents would die; her father hadn’t been the youngest of men when she had moved to New Zealand for school, so the fact that he had gone on to live as long as he had was quite the feat. But time came for everyone, the only question that lingered in her mind was, would she be told when that time came? Matilda answered it for her when a letter arrived at her door informing her that their father had died. The news shattered Georgina, more so than she had ever expected. The man was cold, distant and had sent her away when she had been so young and vulnerable. But he had been her father, and at one point in her life, she had idolised him. Now he was gone.
England was colder than she remembered. Georgina buttoned up her coat to her throat as she stood in front of the gravestone. All traces of the extravagant funeral were long gone, and the long-respected noble now lay with the rest, as if he were just one of many that had passed away. It felt strange to think of a man who had loomed large over too many facets of Georgina’s and others' lives, was now just one in a row of headstones.
“I’m not used to it being cold in December,” Georgina said out loud, mostly to the headstone but also to the presence she heard approaching her from behind.
