Professor Adler had almost finished restocking the cabinet that sat along the side of the classroom when the first years turned up for their next lesson. She wanted to make sure that any student, regardless of whether she was teaching them, had access to the basic necessities any student might need throughout the term. The drawers were filled with tissues, plasters, wipes and deodorant. Spare hand cream and sanitizing lotions, hair clips and products for the girls, and even extra pieces of parchment, fresh notebooks and multicoloured pens. It was free for all, and the mother in her was keen to make sure the students felt as though they had anything they could need.
"Good morning gang!" Professor Adler smiled as the first years took their seats, "Please get out your writing materials today, we have a lot to cover. If you're missing anything you're welcome to help yourself in the drawers over there," she pointed in the direction of those she'd just refilled. "If you ever need anything outside of the lesson or for your other subjects you're also welcome to help yourself." Geo didn't want students to think they could only come in here during their DADA classes. The professor waited for the class to settle, before jumping into the content for that morning.
"So why do we have Defense Against the Dark Arts class to begin with?" Professor Adler asked the class. "All the wizarding schools teach this subject as a mandatory subject and for what?" The board behind her suddenly showed an animated picture, and Professor Adler wrote out his name beside the image.
"This is Lord Voldemort," Professor Adler introduced, a stern look on her face. "Some of you may also have heard him by You-Know-Who or He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named. At the height of his life, people had every reason to be afraid of him. He murdered and tortured many people and creatures over the years in the hope of controlling the wizarding community in Great Britain. He abused the Dark Arts and as a result lost a great deal of himself in the process. Voldemort is a perfect example of why we don't play around with the Dark Arts because of the negative consequences." Geo knew it would be a heavy topic for first years but she had a responsibility to let them know. "Together with a group of loyalists called the Death Eaters, Lord Voldemort worked towards "cleansing" the magical world of those they believed impure and unworthy of wielding magic. Primarily, this meant those who were muggles and muggle-born, and those with mixed blood such as part-veela, or part-giant. Those who weren't sympathetic to his cause also could have met the same fate." Geo explained, before the picture behind her changed and a new face appeared.
"Next we have Gormlaith Gaunt. She was an unstable and cruel witch who believed in pureblood supremacy, meaning she had an intense hatred for anyone with a different view from hers. Gaunt used jinxes, hexes and curses to bring living hell to those around her. Her hatred for muggles and muggleborns ran so deep, that she even murdered her own sister and brother-in-law for showing sympathy towards their muggle neighbours. She kidnapped and manipulated her niece, Isolt Sayre, and later tried to kill her when she married a muggle. Some of you who enjoy history may recognise the name of her niece as one of the founders of the American wizarding school Ivermorny, which she founded alongside her muggle husband," Professor Adler continued. Having taught at Ilvermorny before coming back to New Zealand, she was more familiar with the school than some of the students may have been. Once again the picture behind the blonde changed into a third image.
"And finally this is Gellert Grindelwald. He was expelled from Durstrang at a young age for conducting disturbing experiments on his peers. Grindelwald used and abused the Dark Arts, killing, maiming and controlling people through Dark Arts with the intention of ending the International Statue of Secrecy. Some also say he sought a way to cheat death." Professor Adler hoped none of these students thought that it were possible.
As the image fell away from the board, Geo continued. "There are dark witches and wizards all over the world including here in New Zealand. The Scitorari, who are now those who practice the Dark Arts within their focus are not people you want to mess around with." Professor Adler had encountered enough Scitorari to know they were bad news. "The main reason that we've gone through these examples if that I want you to understand why it's important we're learning how to defend ourselves. With any luck you won't come across people like this in your lifetime, however should you find yourself of needing to protect yourself or a loved one, this is why we must be confident in our defense." Geo hoped the first years understood the importance of what she was trying to teach them.
It had been a long lecture today, but the woman hoped the students at least found the information helpful. "Next week we will be focusing on spells, so make sure you bring your wands. I'm sure you've been told your wands are an extension of yourself, so it would be wise to get accustomed to keeping it upon your person as much as possible." Geo didn't want to see another wand left behind at breakfast, either. "No homework for today, see you next week!" She grinned, dismissing her class.
