First Years Lesson Four

Professor Adler's students were already in the lesson, sat in their seats and (hopefully) behaving themselves, when the blonde pushed open the door and strode to the front of the class, hair flying over her shoulder and not tied up in her usual braids. By the time she reached the head of the classroom, turning to face her students, she was out of breath and slightly red in the face, as though she'd run here from the Astronomy Tower. Probably not the best start to a lesson that would be one of their most serious. "Does everyone have their parchment out?" she asked, giving them and herself a moment to prepare themselves.

"What are the consequences of using the Dark Arts?" Geo asked rhetorically, "That's a complex question since not all dark practices are truly evil or even criminal. You've seen what getting involved with the Dark Arts can do when I showed you an image of Lord Voldemort. Once a normal human like you and me, his physical appearance changed gradually as he became more involved with the Dark Arts. But as I said, that doesn't mean that every curse or jinx has the same effect on people,'' Professor Adler spoke and glanced around the classroom, some were taking notes, some weren't. ''The Unforgivable Curses are a different matter.'' With a flick of her wand to the board beside her, some additional notes appeared.

Unforgivable Curses
  • The Killing Curse: Causes instant and painless death
  • The Cruciatus Curse: Inflicts excruciating pain on the victim of the curse
  • The Imperius Curse: Causes the victim to become unquestioningly obedient to the caster

"These spells are particularly cruel, vile, and illegal. The punishment for using any of these spells are severe and will result in a one-way ticket to Azkaban."
Geo wondered how many people already knew about the magical prison. "You will not use these spells under any circumstances," and no one had the right to go above the law and practice these spells, regardless of if it were for educational purposes and even if they believed it to be beneficial. "Anyone who ends up in Azkaban will have their wand taken and destroyed, and you'll carry the reputation as someone who's spent time in that horrendous place for the rest of your life." Geo had seen firsthand what people would do to avoid being sent there, and the influence the prison had on their release. "That's all we're doing for today, however if you like to practice the shield charm and stunning spell again on the dummies, you're more than welcome to, especially if you chose to keep to the theoretical approach last week."
