Fifth Years, Lesson Two

James was back in his classroom to welcome back his fifth years for another lesson. He had attempted to trim down his first lesson compared to the previous year but his attempt had proven unsuccessful. Their latest lesson would be a review of a popular curse, at least it had been popular during his Hogwarts years, he wondered if the students today still used it on each other. Once everyone had made their way inside James raised his wand to close the classroom door and turned his attention to them.

"Welcome back fifth years, I trust you're all settling back into life at Hogwarts and aren't missing home too much, today we will be reviewing the body bind curse, something I'm sure you're all familiar with," James paused for the benefit of the students who had started to take notes. "Can anyone tell me the incantation for this curse?" He waited for a student to answer his question and nodded at them in acknowledgement. "Correct, and can anyone tell me why it is considered a curse and not a jinx? Opinions, best guess?" James nodded as he listened to one student give their thoughts. "Anyone else want to share their thoughts? Perfect," James said as a second student weighed in. "Good thoughts, there isn't a specific right or wrong answer so I'm curious to know what you think,"

"The body bind curse, or Pertificus Totalus causes the body to become rigid, it is not a pleasant curse to be on the receiving end of, it isn't painful per se, but you remain aware as you lay helpless which can be an unsettling experience,"
James said as he refreshed their memory. Having not taught them the curse in the first place he couldn't judge their knowledge for himself so he just gave them a refresher. "The incantation itself stems from Latin 'petrificate' to make into stone, and 'totalis' or entire, just a little information to help you understand the spell better," James stopped to allow them to catch up with their notes. With that last little bit of information about the make up of the incantation, the lesson was over so James brought things to an end. "No homework this week, lucky you but my door is open if you have any questions, class dismissed,"

Assignment: RP the lesson. Answer the questions for extra credit.

Winnie walked into the defence against the dark arts classroom and took her usual spot in the room. She looked to the professor as the man got started, with a spell she did like. She had her own thoughts about why it would be considered bad, but she didn't feel nearly as confident as others to say it out loud. The professor then began talking about the spell, she tried to not roll her eyes at the lecture since this was a spell they'd learnt so long ago, she knew all these things about it, it didn't matter that they were looking at it in a slightly different lens. She packed up her things and then headed out of the room.

Daiki walked into the defence against the dark arts classroom and took his usual spot in the room. His gaze moved to the professor as the man got started, but he didn't remember the name of the incantation so his hand remained down. He took a few notes from what his classmates said and then what the professor said about the spell. Eventually the lesson was wrapped up and he packed up and headed out the room.
