Fifth Year: Lesson Three

Professor Nakamura patiently waited for his students to arrive, closing the door behind them once all of them had entered. “Welcome back fifth years,” he greeted before launching straight into the lesson. “Solar eclipses – it is the name given to when the moon passes between the Earth and the Sun, the moon casting a shadow onto the Earth. This can only happen during a new moon but doesn’t happen every new moon. Otherwise, we all would be accustomed to seeing them, wouldn’t we?” He smiled brightly. “When you stand in the line of totality, the moon completely blocks out the sun.”

“Moving on, we will now talk about lunar eclipses. Generally speaking, a lunar eclipse is when the Earth blocks the light of the sun and casts a shadow on the moon. There are three different types: the penumbral eclipse, the partial lunar eclipse, and the total lunar eclipse.” Professor Nakamura paused to let everyone catch up with their notes. “The total lunar eclipse is known for its bright red colouring. Now, what does this have to do with witches and wizards? These aren’t subjects taught in this class but you might have heard in other classes that certain plants harvested at an eclipse have different magical properties. Now, you do have homework this week, which I hope you’ll all hand in next lesson, but that’s it for tonight. See you next class!” Professor Nakamura said, dismissing the students. He was sure some were disappointed not to use the telescopes this week but the theory was important.

Teddy stretched before sitting down and listening along to Professor Nakamura talk about eclipses. He took down some notes but not many as it was a short lesson. He was a little disappointed that they weren't invited to look through the telescopes at the end of it, it made it feel unnecessary to have the lesson late in the evening. Once he had written down the homework, Teddy packed up his belongings and left the classroom, heading back towards the Gryffindor common room.

Callie walked into the astronomy classroom and took her usual spot in the room. Her gaze moved towards the professor at the front of the room. She took out her notes and books and began writing down what the professor was telling them about the solar eclipses. Making sure that she got down what the professor was saying. She continued to make sure that she got what the professor was telling them about the creatures that were affected by the eclipses, and then the lesson was wrapped up. Callie packed up her things and then headed out of the room.

Enoch walked into the astronomy classroom and took his spot in the room. The teen wasn’t too interested in astronomy anymore. He was writing down what the professor was saying about the lunar eclipses. He had his quill in his hand and was writing down what the professor was saying, bits and pieces but he knew about what an eclipse was, it felt pretty obvious and they had covered it somewhat before. He was glad that the lecture itself was short enough too, and then headed out of the room the moment that he could, making sure that he had a note of the homework, though whether or not he’d do it was something else.

Marley quickly made her way up to her astronomy classroom and took a seat in her usual spot. She then took out the things she needed for the lesson and placed them on the desk in front of her. They were pretty much halfway through the semester now, and Marley couldn't believe how fast the school year had gone by. The Hufflepuff moved her attention towards the professor as the professor started the lesson. Today they were learning about Eclipses, which Marley found quite intriguing and fun! Marley took down as many notes as she could, as she didn't want to miss out on anything important. She also nodded her head throughout the lesson from time to time to show the professor that she understood the content. Marley tried her best to hold in her yawns throughout the lesson from how tired she was.

It wasn't long before the lesson had come to an end and they were dismissed. Marley quickly packed up her things as well as tided up her area. She then says a quick and appreciative thanks and goodbye to the professor before heading out of the classroom with her friends and the rest of her classmates.

She’d gotten kind of used to the late night lessons, but it didn’t stop her from yawning as she walked into the Astronomy classroom and sat at her usual spot. She took down notes as soon as the Professor started talking, not wanting to miss anything. She was fascinated by the idea of Lunar Eclipses and had always wanted to see one properly, but she wasn’t always in the right place to do so. And a red moon? That had to be magical right? Well, she was sure it should affect magic anyway. But she wasn’t an expert. When the class ended, she quickly finished up her notes and headed out.

Veronica still hated the late night Astronomy lessons because even after years they still threw off her sleep schedule. She’d have to give serious consideration to not continuing the class in her sixth year. She listened to Professor Nakamura talk about solar eclipses and took notes on the different types. It was pretty boring, the moon blocks out the sun, so what? It just goes dark for a bit then everyone goes about their day. Veronica really didn’t see why this useless bit of information warranted an entire hour of their young lives. When the lesson was finally over she bolted out of the classroom and headed straight back to bed.
