"You get the first bite!" Irene heard as she scarfed down a rather large spoonful of vanilla ice cream. Focusing her attention on the blonde across the table with eyes that were identical to her own, the woman could feel the smile crossing her face. "Why thank you, Lina" the woman stated before pushing the cherry towards her daughter's side of the large bowl they were sharing. The eight year old's eyes widened and with a smile she picked up the cherry and gobbled it. With a chuckle, Irene took another bite of ice cream before engaging her daughter in a conversation about their plans for the rest of the day. Much as she had from the moment she'd come into Irene's life, Melina was entrancing her mother. Now that she was older, it was with her laugh and her smile. The girl was good at getting along with people, a trait that she certainly hadn't gotten from her mother.
As the pair finished up their sundae, Melina jumped up from her seat and reached for her mother's hand. "Come on. Come on. We've got to go!" she urged. Irene stood up, quickly reaching for her bag as she was tugged out the door and to the Harbour. A small crowd had gathered there to watch the ships sail in. They came in at a clip, much faster than normal boats would come in. There was no doubt that they were being propelled by magical means. It was their contents that had brought everyone to the Harbour, however. Rumor had it that the magical carnival was coming back to town, complete with its jesters and clowns and even the small magical zoo that they brought when they came. Melina had been too small for the last carnival, but she was eager, oh-so-eager to enjoy this one. Irene began to wind her way around people, trying to get closer to the railing near the water's edge.
