Ruby had rather unintentionally spent far too much time indoors of late and knew she needed to get out more, instead of hiding away inside the castle like some sort of student version of rapunzel with short hair and less of the singing. There wasn't zero singing though, Ruby did sing a bit, however Ruby sounded like a strangled cat when she sang and doing it indoors wasn’t doing anyone any favours.
When she had free time and the sun was shining, Ruby decided to get out by taking a walk down to the lake by herself. She had never actually done something like this before, mostly because she preferred company when venturing that far from the castle. Nonetheless she'd heard the lake was peaceful when no one else was around and worth exploring, and maybe even a good singing spot if she felt like scaring the birds. But the moment Ruby reached the water’s edge, she found it creepy instead, like something invisible was watching her. And then the unwelcome intrusive thoughts rolled in like what if she slipped? What if she fell in the water? What if she drowned and no one found her because the lake was so large? Or what if she was found, but only after being partially eaten by sea monkeys, or whatever lived in lakes and ate people. "Shut up" she said out loud without realising she'd spoken. She wasn’t sure where the thoughts came from exactly, but they did rather ruin the peaceful lake walk she’d been looking forward to.
