- Now you see her, now you don't. Deryn is an expert at social camoflage & blending in, but seldom forms any real social connections with people.
- Deryn tends to be aloof & distant, not having had much opportunity for friendships as a child with her parents moving around so much that she finds the busy chaos of Hogwarts & the large numbers of children all in one place somewhat overwhelming which brings out all of her blending instincts but also reinforces her instinct to keep people at arms length.
- She is also an avid learner with a strong curiosity and drive to learn new things. She regards Human beings themselves as a species to be studied as much as anything.
- Having been very erratically socialised she often has trouble giving credibility to anyone elses values (or opinions) but her own. And her own are highly personalised to say the least.
- But perhaps the most significant characteristic, and one that underlies much of her personality, is that she has had to live so much of her life in concealment and lies that the concept of being safe enough with a person to trust them and reveal herself is quite alien.
She already knew the importance of this pretence by the time she was three years old, but it was burned indelibly into her core personality when she was four and in 'breaking cover' while in a temper her best (and last) friend nearly died. The level of control she has maintained since then has been so tight that hiding herself and concealing her thoughts and feelings has become as natural as breathing. And, no matter how angry or upset she might be, she has never let herself lose her temper.
- One of the things that intrigues her about Hogwarts is the possibility that this will be a stable environment over time, and just possibly a place where she might meet people with whom she can be safe. Deryn had no siblings and sometimes wondered if she had been born by mistake also. While her parents are loving and attentive when they remember to be, most of the time they get so absorbed in their work that they almost seem to forget that she's there. When younger she wished for a sister so that she would have someone to play with and to talk to and occasionally still has pangs wondering what it would have been like.
Deryn's reaction to the Hogwarts letter was mostly surprise, although her father had occasionally mentioned Hogwarts when talking about his childhood he had never got around to being specific and as Deryn's contact with other members of the wizarding world was erratic no one had really thought to tell her about it, or, indeed, that she might not actually know.

- Pre-existing pet:- An Australian Green Tree-snake called Mink who has been the closest thing to a friend that Deryn has had for the last four years. Just over a meter long and only slightly thicker than her thumb Mink likes to ride around on Deryn's shoulders or wrapped around her neck or arm under Deryn's robe.

- Born in Dunedin New Zealand she has moved around all of her life staying for various lengths of time in many out-of-the-way towns in New Zealand and Australia as her Parents pursued their studies. She has frequently had to live as a muggle hiding within muggle society.

- Deryn's Mother 'Marika Kym' (nee 'Thelen') is German and a Halfblood. Marika's Mother (Silvia Thelen) is a Parselmouth and worked as a Healer. Her Father (Jurgen Thelen) Was Muggle born and worked hunting down rare magical items & ingredients on commission for magical craftsmen such as wand makers and Apothcaries.
- Deryn's Father Morgan Kym is descended from one of the earliest magical families to emigrate to New Zealand. Upon Graduating he shocked his eminently respectable family by failing to settle down to a respectable wizardly occupation & setting off to explore the world, meeting Marika in Germany, and finally settling into their semi-nomadic life as Alchemists researching the magical properties of Native New Zealand and Australian Plants and animals.

- Deryn Loves to paint and draw and enjoys the challenge of working within the limitations of the muggle media of Acrylics & Pencil & paper.
- Having spent much of her childhood pretending to be a muggle living amoung muggles her tastes are more varied than most wizard children, her favourite Band is a German techno band called E Nomine and her favourite books are Muggle detective stories
- Gymnastics, in particular Floor, Bar & Beam work, she always hated Boxwork.

- Broom skills are above average but not exceptional. Not a contender for the next Quidditch team.
