Bryan's mouth had been hanging open for so long, he was getting a jaw-ache. This place was ridiculous. Only magic itself could have kept a world like this hidden from him for all his life. Well, magic, and apparently Bryan's dad, who had never even suggested that magic could make candles float, let alone bring the entire night sky indoors. Come to think of it, his dad had never done any magic in front of him. Bryan had always assumed that magic was purely mental, a sort of invisible, intangible force that silently manipulated the universe around him, but this was real. Even if it was an elaborate optical illusion, he could see it, and if he'd had a long enough ladder, he could have reached out and touched it. Why on earth would his dad live like a muggle when he could do all this?
"Duffy, Bryan."
An eternity had passed in the blink of an eye. Bryan climbed the stage and sat down. Somewhere in the sea of faces, he thought he saw Kate, but suddenly the brim of the sorting hat obscured his vision. It was heavier than he'd expected. He scrunched up his nose as he felt the thing moving by itself on his head, resisting the urge to shake it off. This was a bit too intimate for his liking!
"I'll be quick, don't you worry! Everything I need is there- adventurous, eager for fun, a touch of bravery... Gryffindor!"
"Duffy, Bryan."
