Speed walked down the pebbly road, kicking some pebbles as he went. Speed was currently alone, his sister being at home babysitting. Speed and his uncle Cameron were not dumb, as soon as Austiin left the house they both ran out. Tommy could be a little brat at times. So Speed decided to go to Brightstone, why not? He could not go home until later or Stephanie would kill him and tell Austiin that he ran out and did not help babysit Tommy.

Speed felt slightly weird. Usually he would be with his older twin sister linking arms and looking at all the stores and complaining to each other. Pulling each other’s hair and running around. Eating ice-cream and trying to flick each other with ice-cream using the spoon. Just for fun. But right now Speed had nothing to do, nothing to entertain himself. When Speed was bored he tended to become sad, Speed hated being sad. So he decided to try and do something entertaining. After a few minutes Speed decided he would sit down for a little and recharge. Fixing his white sweater he sat on a bench in front of one of the many stores.

Bethany Claire Young was a British girl, with a colourful family. She wasn't the kind of girl that stood out from the crowd. She didn't have the kind of family that could shower her with gifts and complements. Her family was odd. Her family loved the environment to new extreme. Bethany Claire Young had little confidence and she didn't go out all too often. And this was really okay, because she didn't have anywhere to go. For Bethany Claire had spent the last 13 years of her life in the freezing cold Iceland. More north than normal people. Only going further south for one month in a year to see the extended family. Bethany Claire had grown used to the cold, but she hated snow. She hated snow more than Bethany Claire hated people who couldn't spell properly. Bethany was now no longer in Iceland. And for this she was glad. The grant money had gone and her family had been left with nothing, so with nothing left, everything was more to New Zealand. It seemed to Bethany that New Zealand seemed like a good place to come and start over, and not just that, but she had the chance of actually attending a wizard school. Going to a school, that she had to go to every lesson at an already decided time. Where she had to get up early, and do mounds of homework. Although to most it would seem boring to Bethany Claire Young it was the dream. Bethany was out and about for the first time since moving to New Zealand. She was living in a one bedroom apartment with her both her parents, and 3 little sisters, 2 brothers and a cat. It was small, but after having spent time in a house in the area just before the arctic circle, it was luxury. Although Bethany currently slept on the floor, she was at least never cold. In fact, it was still summer in New Zealand, and it was the first summer that Bethany Claire had ever seen.

It had been an early start for the bleached blonde, she had helped tidy the apartment. And helped her mum and dad get the breakfast made for Jeremy Young, Misha Young, Emma Young, Niamh Young and Anna Young. All of her siblings, then Bethany was able to go out. She knew that soon, both her parents would have jobs and she'd be away at school and she wouldn't have to worry about looking after the family. The family would fix itself eventually. They'd get more money and they'd all be able to move out. It was a good thing that the year after next Emma Young and Misha Young would be also be starting school. The twins of the family, and the two that would take responsibility when no one else was around. Bethany Claire Young was very close to all her siblings. But she really was closest with the twins. Since they were closest to her in ages, having just turned 10. Jeremy was 8, Niamh 6 and Anna 4. And this wasn't helped by the fact that Bethany suspected that her mother was pregnant again. And this wasn't something that worried Bethany but rather made her think that maybe it would be good to get a new house and a bigger house before anything else was done. But Bethany avoided thinking about it. She ignored it and just tried to enjoy her walk. Bethany was feeling quite hot so, she took off her jumper and tied it around her waist. She wasn't used to the heat that the summer really brought. She was getting quite tired from all the walking. She'd been walking for the past hour. It was odd that now that she could go out and walk around, that all she would do was that. Walk until it hurts. Bethany almost laughed as she thought that. Well, of course that's what any sane person would do. Bethany Claire walked until she came across a bench, that had a boy sat on it.

Bethany wasn't confident enough to go straight to the boy and sit down and talk with him. She didn't know if he would hate her, or be mean to her, so instead Bethany Claire Young, just walked over and sat down next to him. She didn't say anything. Who would want to talk to me anyway she thought to herself. Bethany was referring to the fact that she had pale skin and bleached blonde hair, and that she didn't think herself in any sense appealing. Despite the eyes that were a mixture of blue and green. A perfect blend. Instead of speaking to the boy, Bethany Claire Young sat looking out at the shops, a smile on her face. New Zealand would be a good thing for her and her family, she just knew it.

Speed continued sitting. It was warm and he was tired, he had nothing to do. The only thing that he could do was just sit and watch the people go by, if only her had someone to talk to. Then he would no longer be bored and would be slightly happier. Speed liked being happy and disliked being bored, boredom was his enemy but it often came but rarely did it stay for too long. Speed looked like an opening and gentle person, his appearance welcomed people and that helped him make friends and open up even the shyest of people. The fact that Speed was gentle and open also helped him make friends and help people with their problems, he always had a shoulder to cry on and an ear to listen and the heart to never judge, he also knew how to calm down an angry person and open up a shy one. These traits were some of Speeds favourite traits that a person could have and was extremely happy to have such traits. Speed could not imagine himself being a mean and cold person, ever. It just wasn’t him. Speed was the boy who was gentle and liked seeing people smile, even if it meant you had to frown to make ot possible, Speed enjoyed talking and listening to people and was very good at both. Helping was something he did often and was something that helped him carry on.

Speed was torn from his thoughts when a girl sat next to him, she was quite pale looking but had pretty eyes. With a kind smile Speed turned to her and held out his manicured hand for her to shake. "Hi, Im Speed Stark." He said nicely, with a nice smile on his face. "What are you doing here?" He asked looking at the girl with his bright green eyes, his eyes showed that he was gentle and kind. Maybe a little too kind.

As Bethany sat on the bench, her blue eyes moved between all the people that was walking past her. Completely ignoring her to say the least. Women who walked like the owned the world. Little boys who ran like they were being chased by pirates. Little girls who wore more make up than Bethany had ever owned. The city was an odd place for Bethany Claire Young. She was used to people covered like there was an ice age, which there was, not like it was who can wear the least contest. The men, and boys had the better idea. But then, they also walked like the owned everything and that they were superior. Bethany knew that they weren't but she couldn't help that her mind wandered down to that thought, that they believe that they were. Her mind was never near her. It was worried about the home. About how they were going to be able to afford living. How on earth they were meant to survive without her. It wasn't often that Bethany Claire Young was selfish, but she was going to be if she went to school. Back in Iceland, Bethany had taken care of everything. She had helped her mum cook, helped get the younger ones up. She had been helping her mum with everything for as long as she could remember. She had helped bring up Jeremy and Niamh. And had practially raised Anna with the help of Emma and Misha. it was just the way things had turned out. It did mean that Bethany had little if any friends. That she had no idea how to act around others her age. How to act when they spoke. How to stop herself from comparing herself to the people. But Bethany wasn't too bothered about friends. her friends were really her family. And they were the best. Bethany had so much with them all. She knew all about them. Friends, they were more difficult. There was the same principals as family, but then there was a whole other dimension. Bethany Claire Young, was ready for friendship, but she wasn't sure if faced with a potiential friendship if she would be any good at it.

A voice beside her spoke, and this made her jump. She looked around and pushed herself away. Before realising the boy, Speed, had said his name. She just looked the boy up and down. He had well done nails, and she blushed, looking down at her own, messy and dirty nails where the skin around the nail itself had been bitten, a nervous habit. She looked from the hand to the boy, and slowly extended her own hand to him. She shook it lightly, before taking her hand back, as quick as lightening. "I'm Bethany Young." Bethany spoke, her voice was odd, it was English, tinged with Icelandic. It was understandable, but it was an odd accent that made it hard for people to pinpoint where she was actually from. She then wondered if she actually wasn't meant to be where she was. She didn't have a reason for why she was there. Sitting on this bench, next to a boy, who looked clearly richer than her. She didn't know if maybe he was waiting on someone and that was the New Zealand way of saying please will you go away. Bethany looked down at the ground, and then back to him. "I was out for a walk, I'm sorry if I'm in your space, or in the space of someone who you are meeting. I'll go if you need me to." Bethany smiled ever so slightly, meeting his eyes with her blue ones and looking apologetic. She hoped that maybe he wasn't waiting on someone and actually just wanted to be her friend, this would close to make her week. After all that had happened a little good for herself was what Bethany wanted. As selfish as it sounded.

Speed jumped when the girl beside him suddenly jumped, he was not expecting it in the slightest. Speed was not used to scaring people at all and it made him nervous when he thought the=at he had done something to scare someone. How could he be friends with someone if they didn’t like him because he was scary? Speed never saw himself as a scary figure at all. In fact he saw himself as a friendly figure, one that enjoyed talking and making lifelong friends. So now Speed was slightly nervous. “Lovely to meet you Bethany!” Speed told the girl happily. Speed was still slightly nervous but it was disappearing fast, the girl did not seem scared of him after all just shocked by his sudden speaking. This made Speed smile, Speed was a very talkative and friendly boy when comfortable and happy, he was both at the moment so he hoped that the girl would not be drawn away by his niceness and gentleness like so many were. Speed found it odd that if someone was too nice, like himself, than they were seen as mean and deceitful, being called mean names such as those made Speed wish he was not so nice and was more able to be mean to people who were mean to him first, but he could not do it. Speed could physically not be cruel to someone other than his Grandfather, but he was different, he hated Speed ever since he was able to breathe.

Speed was not rich, but he had a feeling that the girl was slightly intimidated by him, he looked at the girl up and down, then quickly at himself. He did not find himself a threat to the girl or in the slightest intimidating, in fact the girl would probably be able to do more damage to Speed than he could to her. Speed hated fighting, especially people who looked nice and caring, like this girl did. But the thing he hated most was when in a fight with someone mean and cruel, that was the worst. Speed smiled and shook his head. The girls accent was nice and interesting. “No you are allowed to sit at a bench, especially this bench.” He said kindly and soothing her thoughts with his kind words. “I am not meeting anyone, I am in fact extremely bored so I would love to continue to talk to you more.” Speed expressed happily, letting the girl know she was completely welcome on the bench and that Speed did not mind in the slightest that she was there.
