Professor Zumwalt was rather excited about this lesson. She had to pick the location for their next travels. The third years were going to continue their practice of mapping the skies tonight. They would be traveling to a Northern Hemisphere location to map the stars in the constellations they had discussed the previous week. Each student had a blank star map waiting on their desk. Once she heard voices coming up from the stairs, she opened the door, closing it after the last student had entered the classroom making sure the stragglers had arrived as well.
“Good evening! So glad that tonight is such a clear night,” Adorah said pausing a moment to see if any of the students would question her. It was currently raining and lightning outside the windows of the classroom. “Of course, I mean to say, at the location we are headed to. That's right - another field trip! The weather report from my trip there earlier is clear, dark skies, perfect for mapping the stars,” she said to her students. Adorah had the students follow her to the edge of the grounds where a portkey would be functional. Pulling out a pillow case, she had the students gather around, each placing a hand on the fabric before they disappeared from the castle, reappearing in an open field.
After adjusting her footing, Adorah counted to make sure everyone had arrived in one piece. “Welcome to Alaska - and - technically - yesterday morning! Time zones are quite a tricky thing. Here in our past, we shall see stars,” Adorah said, pointing up to the sky. It was much later here in the evening than it was back at the castle. “Now, you all have an hour and a half to map as many of the constellations we talked about last week as you can - the ones that are in the northern hemisphere, of course. If you finish, feel free to continue mapping any of the other constellations you might spot in the sky. Remember to use your tools properly to get correct distances between the stars. These maps will be graded so if you're struggling, please ask for help."
The students began to take their measurements, and she walked around the group, assisting as needed. At the end of their time, she gestured for everyone to come back to her, holding out the portkey once everyone was in front of her. Hitting the grounds, she led them back to the classroom to get their belongings. “Don't forget that the semester is almost over, and studying the night before your exam will not help you learn in the long run - so start early!” she called out as students exited her room.
