Wendy was up in the owlery, going to check on her owl Weasley. It was her birthday and she knew her mother would send her something. Sure enough, when she got to the top of the tower, she saw her beloved owl with a small package in is feet. She smiled weakly and stroked him as she took the package from him. When she opened it up, she saw a pretty golden heart locket with a picture of her and her mother. Wendy read the short letter that accompanied the package.
Dearest Wendeline,

HAPPY BIRTHDAY SWEETIE!!! Twelve years old, how does that feel? I still remember the day you were born as if it were yesterday! I hope your birhday is wonderful at that school and you're celebrating it with all your friends! Missing you!

Love always,
Your mother,
Charlotte
Wendy sighed into the silence, other than the hooting of the many owls, she missed her mother so much more than words could describe. Life at Hogwarts was so quiet and lonely, she just couldn't seem to get over her homesickness. When she had visited her mother during the Christmas break, she had seriously considered never coming back, but she wasn't a quitter, so she had to stick it out. Besides, she had also lied to her mother and told her she was having lots of fun and making many friends, so she couldn't tell her mom she was lying. For some reason Wendy just couldn't break out of her shell yet and she didn't know why.

Joceline, who knew it was her friend's brithday, had gone to the sixth floor to find Wendy to give her a birthday present, that was also a thank you for being there for her in her time of need. When a Gryffindor girl came out and said that Wendy had gone up to the Owlrey she thanked the girl and skipped on over to the Owlrey, deciding that she could also go write her Grandpa.

When Joceline reached the Owlrey she spotted Wendy and beamed at her. "Happy Birthday Wendy!" she chirped, wrapping her arms around her only friend merrily. "How does it feel being so old?" she teased as she pulled away once more. Joce's bright blue eyes twinkled gently, she liked Wendy's company, and hoped that they would become closer friends, because it was obvious that they both had trouble making friends.

As Joce awaited Wendy's response, her thoughts ran to what her birthday would be like next month. She had always spent the day with her Mom and her Grandpa, but since Grandpa was a muggle and had altzhiemers, she couldn't write him, it would hurt her if he didn't remember her, as she loved him so much. She also didn't have Thomas, so really the only person she could think of spending the day with was Wendy.

Wendy was admiring the necklace her mother had given her in her hands, squinting her pale blue eyes when she noticed there seemed to be some writing on the inside. Before she could get a better look however, she heard someone coming and looked up to see a pair of familiar bright blue doe eyes. "Joce!" Wendy greeted her happily, wrapping her own arms around her in return as her only friend wished her a happy birthday. She was surprised yet completely thrilled that she had remembered, making what she thought would be another gloomy day already brighter.

Wendy giggled when Joceline asked her how it felt to be so old. "A lot better than eleven!" she said jokingly. "But don't worry, you'll catch up next month," she teased Joceline playfully as if there really was a difference to being one year older. Wendy laughed lightly and asked, "So got any plans for your birthday?" Wendy was definitely planning on helping her friend celebrate it no matter what way she wanted to celebrate it. She thought it was cool how her birthday was exactly one month earlier than Joceline's.

Joceline giggled when Wendy teased her about being a month behind her in age. "So got any plans for your birthday?" Her smile fell for a moment, “Just a regular day,” she responded gently, giving her friend a trying smile. “What about you? Doing anything special with those hoards of friends of yours?” she asked, referring to what was written on Wendy’s letter. She didn’t mean to sound insulting but she knew that Wendy was lying to her parents, and she understood completely. Why would anyone ever want to admit that you really only had one friend?

Joceline tucked a strand of her hair behind her ear softly as she gave her friend a warm smile. Remembering the present she had in her hands for Wendy she looked down at the red tissue paper that was coming out of the small, light blue bag that held a black velvet box which had one silver chain and four tie pendants in it. Not only that but it held a leather bound copy of The Canterbury Tales. She looked up at Wendy with a smile and said as she handed the gift to her, "Happy Birthday."

[My apologies, computer stuff ya know.]

Wendy couldn't help but blush lightly when Joceline pointed out her blatant lie in her mother's letter but rolled her pale blue eyes playfully. "I think my hoards of friends would prefer to tease me and call me 'half blood'," Wendy replied, thinking of the people Isabella seemed to have gotten to be mean to Wendy as well. Really, half blood was the best insult they could come up with, and it wasn't one that bothered her one bit. She shook her blonde head and said, "A regular day is no day for a birthday, we'll do something that day," she said smiling brightly, referring to Joceline's birthday.

Once she pulled out a gift she had for her, Wendy was truly surprised, it was one thing for her to remember, but to get her something too, Wendy had never expected it. She carefully opened up the gift and her blue eyes glistened with happiness as she saw the four pendants. "Joce, these are awesome!" she said excitedly. It was so unique, perfect for her. Next she pulled out The Canterbury Tales and Wendy's smile grew brighter, if possible. She remembered her mother telling her about them and it was truly magical that Joceline would seem to know she was interested in reading them. "Seriously Joce, you've outdone yourself, thank you so much!" she said happily, wrapping her arms around her friend.
