Sixth Years: Lesson One

Another year, another headache, Angel thought dryly, eying the host of Screechsnaps set about the greenhouse. At least his sixth years were quickly arriving so they wouldn't be his problem for much longer. Mostly, he thought, eying a few of the sleepier ones who were still clearly on their holiday sleep schedule. “Right, let’s get right into it, shall we? I think I recognize most of you from last year, well done surviving, but just in case, I'm Professor Castillo, and welcome to 6th Year Herbology,” he said, once everyone was settled.

I know you're used to taking today easy, but we are getting right into things I'm afraid. You may have noticed the Screechsnaps on the benches in front of you. Screechsnaps are semi-sentient and quite vocal plants, which can be a blessing and a curse considering, they’ll definitely let you know if they need something.” As if sensing Angel’s attention on them, a few of the screechsnaps nearby let out a string of disgruntled chatter, causing Angel to wince at the noise. “We’ll have you lot be taking care of one for the rest of the semester, starting now, so hopefully come exam time you’ll be able to recognize exactly what your screechsnap is trying to tell you when it starts well, screeching.

For whatever reason, Screechsnaps never seemed to like him, and Angel wasn’t able to get very close to many of them before they broke out into some manner of ruckus. At least it made a good excuse to get his students to put in some practical time with some of the plants now. “We’ll just be repotting them today, so please pick a plant and get to it. Make sure you give them a good balance of water and fertilizer, they’ll let you know if mess up so keep an eye out for any writhing or vocalizations in particular.” As he passed, one of the nearby screechsnaps blew a raspberry and Angel was unable to repress the urge to return one of his own. He'd definitely been spending too much time with his daughters.

Once everyone seemed to have successfully wrangled their screechsnap, Angel gave the class a quick wave, gathering their attention before they packed up for the day. “This year is going to be vital groundwork in order to progress to your NEWTs next year, and I will require at least an A in this class if you wish to take Herbology next year, so no slacking, alright?” Satisfied that the kids were well and truly lectured and warned for the upcoming year, he leant back against his desk again, taking a quick glance at his pocket watch. “And in the spirit of hard work and not slacking, let’s call the lesson there. Feel free to come and chat if you’ve any questions. Otherwise get out of here, enjoy your first week back,” he said, dismissing the class with an tired wave.

RP repotting your screechsnap, feel free to have some fun with how yours reacts or behaves as you do.

Unlike the rest of her professors during the first week of the semester, Professor Castillo would be getting straight into things if the plant on her desk was any indication. Professor Castillo explained that it was a screechsnap, a semi-sentient plant they would be taking care of. She really wished she would stop being given semi-sentient plants to take care of in Herbology, as it was going to trigger trauma. She felt a horrible sense of déjà vu as she was instructed to repot the plant. Veronica got to work doing just that, grasping the screechsnap and pulling it up out of its current pot and dropping it into a new one and packing the soil in tight. She watered it per the professor’s instructions, and once they were done, she just wanted to get back to the castle so she could clean up. Once they’d been dismissed, Veronica put her plant to the side and made her way out of the greenhouse so she could wash up back at the castle.

Marley thought herbology was mildly okay. It wasn't something she really enjoyed and she didn't really know why she was still taking it, but she guessed it was a good idea to keep taking it nevertheless. The Hufflepuff quickly packed up the things she needed for the lesson before quickly making her way to the greenhouse, slightly losing track of time. Once she arrived in at the greenhouse, she took a spot that was the nearest available and got out the things she needed for the lesson.

Marley moved her attention towards the professor as he got started with the lesson. It seemed they were getting straight to it, no basic introduction, which the Hufflepuff had been a little surprised by. But she was happy to get started right away anyway. It looked like they were going to be learning a specific plant this semester, replotting it and everything in between. Marley made sure to take note of what the professor was saying about the plant, as she didn't want to miss out on anything important about it. She got straight into repotting her screechsnap, doing as instructed. The Hufflepuff got a hold of the screechsnap before pulling it out from its current pot, before transferring it into its new pot. Marley winced a little from the sound it had made as she had pulled it from its original pot. She then placed and packed the soil around its roots and whatnot. Marley made sure to water it as instructed as well.

It wasn't long until they were finished with everything and they were dismissed. Marley made sure to pack up her things and tidy her area, making sure everything she had used was put back in its proper place. The Hufflepuff then says a quick and appreciative thanks and goodbye to the professor, before heading back to the castle with the rest of her friends and classmates.

Millie had been hoping to be eased back into Herbology, it wasn’t a subject she was a big fan of, so she had been hoping Professor Castillo would follow the lead of her other teachers and have an introductory lesson to start things off. She wasn’t so lucky. ‘Semi-sentient’ was a term that got thrown around far too much for plants that usually ended up being harvested in some way. It was all a little weird, but Millie tried not to think about it too much. She listened to Professor Castillo talk about the screechsnaps and once he had given them all the instructions they needed, she got to work repotting hers, packing it with fertiliser and making sure it had enough water. Once she was done, she cleaned up, packed up and made her way out of the greenhouse after being dismissed.

Ten was happy to be back in her favourite class, and even more so to see Veronica getting into it too. She stood beside the prefect, wondering whether this year would feel similar to their second when they'd had to take care of a mandrake. Back then, Ten hadn't realised just how important Herbology would become for her, and while she'd managed to keep her mandrake alive, she hoped this time to keep her screechsnap thriving. She grasped it as instructed, repotting it quickly because she could understand most plants didn't like to be out of bed (understandably) for too long at a time, and tucked it in firmly with the soil. "It's looking good," she mentioned over Veronica's shoulder, glancing at her plant and hoping she sounded as encouraging as she wanted to be. At the end of the lesson Ten hung around the greenhouse a little longer, just incase there was anything else in there that needed watering before she left.
