Leading the first batch of duelists onto the stage, Katherine gestured for them to take their positions on opposite ends, and briefly explained the rules and formalities as a refresher, though by now everyone both competing and spectating was bound to know them. With all said and done, the Headmistress took her place on a raised podium overlooking the stage and the crowd gathered around it, before taking her wand to her throat. "Bow and commence." Her voice boomed clearly, informing the competitors that they were welcome to begin.

The duel begins now. You have 24 hours to post, or face disqualification. Ensure that you use the spell list for guidance on age-appropriate spells, and read over the dueling rules and points system. If you are knocked out or otherwise disarmed/incapacitated, or if you run out of points, you will lose and the duel will end. Have fun!
As an added note: Spectators are allowed to post in this topic once per competitors post, but are forbidden from directly interfering with the duels.

Arvel didn't really care who he was up against in the duelling tournament, as long as it wasn't Analei. It wasn't that he didn't think he could beat her - he figured they were about evenly matched - but that he would feel pressured to forfeit early in an attempt to make up for being such a jerk to her. Anyway, none of that mattered for the moment, because he was up against Yvette Maxwell. He didn't know her well enough to predict her moves, and his palms were clammy as he bowed and got into position. To start things off, he fired an antler jinx her way.

One thing Yvette was good at ... Duelling. And no one had thought her better than herself and some studying about the moves and spells that can eliminate or stop an opponent. They started off with a simple intro of bowing and the sound of the go ahead. Yvette had the spell in mind but the sudden fast reflex of her opponent mad her change it to a shield charm. Immediately, the Slytherin swish her wand and blocked the incoming spell. Her heart raising, she fought back "Diffindo!" aiming it right to his heart.

Yvette sure didn't mess around. Arvel jumped out of the way of her spell, narrowly avoiding having his chest ripped open. Well, if that was how she was going to play. His wand started to slip in his hand. He tightened his grip on it. "Incendio!"

Yvette groaned at the fact the little cockroach didn't get hit. She wanted this win so bad but her emotions was taking over her. Last semester was quite a bit of a whirlwind for her with a certain someone and she promised herself she would distant herself from him. The Slytherin tired to get back from the game. And as Arvel clearly spoke his spell, Yvette had time to dodge it by twirling to the other side. Although safe, her hair wasn't as the tips got burn a bit when she did the stunt. "Oh, this is war." Nobody messes with her hair. In anger, she attacked Arvel two spells at a time. "Confundo!" She continued. "Diffindo!" Yvette finished with the same spell she started with

Arvel was almost relieved that the spell didn't hit Yvette directly. He didn't really want to burn her, in spite of how much he wanted to win. He threw up a shield charm as the first spell came his way, but was completely unprepared for Yvette to attack him twice. The spell caught him in the shoulder and tore a long gash under his collarbone. Crying out, he pressed a hand to his shoulder. His robes were already damp. He'd been hit by a few bludgers, but this was a different kind of pain, searing and sharp, and he had to get to his knees just so that he didn't fall to them.

Katherine watched the duel get underway with a small frown, not particularly enjoying how vicious its competitors appeared to be with their spell choices, though it wasn't until Yvette disregarded the rules and attacked twice that the woman stepped in to intervene. It was too late to avoid the second attack, given how unexpected it had been, but as Arvel went down, Katherine conjured a transparent wall between the two duelers and stepped onto the stage, fixing Yvette with a cold glare. "Cease your spellcasting at once." The woman commanded. This was not the first reckless Maxwell to break the rules Hogwarts had set in place, if memory served. Katherine was determined to ensure that she was the last. "For the blatant disregard for dueling regulations, Miss Maxwell is disqualified from the tournament. Mr Ayers is the victor of this round. Allow this to be a lesson to any other competitors who wish to cheat." She spoke clearly, allowing the warning to linger for a moment before turning to Kalif. "Please continue with the next two participants. Mr Ayers, come with me to be tended to by a nurse. As for Miss Maxwell - exit the dueling chamber, immediately. I will deal with you later."

She thought she had won this part but when the Headmistress intrude, she groaned and rolled her eyes. Yvette didn't care about some rules specially something stupid. She was here only because of her cousin who seems to have gotten in her head with the dueling tournament. When she heard her disqualification, she was furious and dead ass straight looked at Arvel. Yvette narrowed her eyes at him, it was like telling him that this isn't done for them yet. After the Headmistress told her to get out of the dueling chambers, she rushed outside to the grounds and inhaled a big gulp of air.
