Leading the first batch of duelists onto the stage, Katherine gestured for them to take their positions on opposite ends, and briefly explained the rules and formalities as a refresher, though by now everyone both competing and spectating was bound to know them. With all said and done, the Headmistress took her place on a raised podium overlooking the stage and the crowd gathered around it, before taking her wand to her throat. "Bow and commence." Her voice boomed clearly, informing the competitors that they were welcome to begin.

The duel begins now. You have 24 hours to post, or face disqualification. Ensure that you use the spell list for guidance on age-appropriate spells, and read over the dueling rules and points system. If you are knocked out or otherwise disarmed/incapacitated, or if you run out of points, you will lose and the duel will end. Have fun!
As an added note: Spectators are allowed to post in this topic once per competitors post, but are forbidden from directly interfering with the duels.

There had been a moment where Tristan had considered not even signing up for the dueling tournament. He had been disgraced publicly, and somehow stepping into the spotlight felt like it would be terrifying this time around. But he had been hoping to reclaim his title as champion after losing it last year. He was too competitive to give up, and would face any whispers with a stoic face. Most people seemed to have moved on a bit anyway, though he knew his reputation was still in tatters. Somehow, he wasn't surprised to see Jerara on the other end of the dueling platform. It almost seemed like it was meant to be, even if Tristan didn't actually believe in things like that. He gave his only friend a weary smile. "Let's make this one they'll remember." He said to him, agreeing to make it a fun duel the way Jerara had tried to do last time. They bowed, then Tristan shot off the first spell. "Levicorpus." There was no head boy badge between them anymore, so this felt less like a rivalry and more like something that could be a lot of fun. He hoped he could make their duel spectacular enough to make people forget about the gossip, even for a moment.

After everything that had happened in the first semester, it felt almost right that his first duel of this tournament was against Tristan. It would be good, they'd said after their last fight that the next, if it happened should be fun. And he whole heartedly intended to have it be so. The boy didn't expect to win the fight, after all Tristan was the better dueller, but certain when Tristan said to make this one that people would remember, he grinned and nodded. "Of course," the head boy replied with a little smile, but he got serious enough quickly and blocked the spell which tristan shot at him with ease, using the protego spells they'd learnt last year. He didn't think too hard before sending back, "Deprimo," a harsh and dangerous spell, but he wouldn't hold back in this fight, he wouldn't expect Tristan to either.

It didn't surprise him that Jerara's idea of 'interesting' spells was also incredibly dangerous. He had prepared himself to block the spell on time, and was glad for it. If he'd been hit by that, he would have been hurt. He wondered briefly how the professors hadn't noticed this about Jerara, or maybe they had and didn't care? He'd done this last year too, but still had the head boy badge on his chest. Tristan forced himself not to linger on that. He had to focus. After blocking Jerara's spell, he sent one off again, "Incarcerous."

Though Jerara was forceful in his spells, he didn't actually want to hurt his friend. These were just spells he could use in such a fight and not really elsewhere. He wanted to try a whole host of spells, and maybe a few would be a bit on the dangerous side. He blocked the ropes from Tristan's spell and threw back a babbling curse.

Tristan put up another shield to block Jerara's next spell, a little relieved it wasn't one that would put him in the hospital wing if it hit. Though he also didn't plan to let any of Jerara's spells hit him. He grinned. "Confundo."

Jerara liked the different spells they got to learn, but he blocked Tristan spell and followed it immediately with a quick, "Langlock," it was a simpler spell, but he thought it would be interesting if it hit. It wouldn't be too bad either if it did in his mind.

Tristan blocked Jerara's spell, smiling a little. He was enjoying the duel, actually forgetting about his problems for a moment. He sent a spell back at Jerara, wondering why he hadn't just dueled like this immediately last year. He still wanted to win, but it didn't seem to matter as much as it usually did. "Impedimentia!"

Jerara just dodged out of the way of the spell which Tristan threw at him, a little laugh of relief following it, Compared with the last duel this was fun, there was none of the intensity like there had been before. It was just good. But, he decided to try something, and cast non-verbally, Aguamenti, watching as water streamed from his wand towards his friend.

Tristan grinned when he saw how close a miss his spell had been. This meant he was doing well, surely. Tristan waited for Jerara to say his next spell, but was blindsided by him doing it nonverbally. Tristan was hit by a stream of water and jumped back, completely soaked. A surprised laugh escaped him, and he shook his head. "Oh, it's on." He said, then pointed his wand at Jerara. "Incendio!" He didn't know if he had the focus for nonverbal spells right now. But he also knew that trying them now wouldn't do him any good, Jerara would expect that much.

jerara found himself laughing slightly when the water hit Tristan, clearly the non-verbal magic had been something that had thrown him off. He wanted to do more non-verbal magic and decided he might. Especially when Tristan declared that it was on. He felt himself nod in agreement. But all of the distraction meant he missed the spell that Tristan threw bad and suddenly his sleeve was on fire. He was quick to pat it out with his hand, perhaps not his wisest choice but having gotten rid of it nonetheless. But when it was out, he cast back, non-verbally an obscuro spell.

Tristan aws worried for a moment when he saw the spell had hit Jerara and his sleeve was on fire. He really didn't want the other boy to get hurt, even if it was easy to fix with magic. But Jerara put it out, and Tristan put up a shield in case the boy would try nonverbal spells again. It seemed to have been the right call. Tristan tried to make up for being worse at those spells by being fast. He shot a Jelly Brain Jinx at his friend.

The choice to switch to non-verbal was definitely adding to jerara's enjoyment. He blocked the spell which Tristan had thrown at him with a non-verbal shield and shot back a non-verbal Confringo. He knew his non-verbal spells lack a little of the force that his verbal spells did but maybe that was better with such dangerous spells.
