Once it was the next round of students' turn, Kennedy gestured for them to approach the platform, assigning them to the north and south ends respectively. She explained the rules to them and once they seemed ready, she stepped back to give them space and let them begin when they were ready.

Signing up to duel had been a last minute decision, and October still didn't quite believe she had done it. She felt the same intense uncertainty she had felt about signing up for Quidditch last minute, and though that had paid off well, she didn't know if this would do the same. As she took to her corner October ran through lists of spells in her mind, wanting to make sure her strategy made sense. As soon as the duel started she moved instinctively, dance reflexes paying off in her quick reaction as she cast a babbling curse, hoping to prevent her opponent from being able to retaliate.

Braxton made a habit of signing up for the dueling tournament but always seemed to go out in the first round. He hoped that this time would be different. He bowed to his opponent and returned to his spot to start. He cast a shielding charm to block the babbling curse that was sent at him and fired a Bat-bogey hex back.

October had been prepared for her first spell not to land and was ready with a shielding spell for her opponent's response, running through lists of spells in her mind as she instinctively responded. "Petrificus Totalus!" October cast back, steady hand not betraying the adrenaline rushing through her.

October's reflexes were keen and she blocked the boy's retaliation quickly, shifting her position slightly. It seemed a good idea to keep moving, create a more difficult target for her opponent to lock on to. As she shifted to the left, she waved her wand to retaliate, sending a jelly-fingers curse back at the boy.

October had been prepared to shield herself from another attack, but she hadn't anticipated her opponent targeting the floor beneath her instead. Being already on the move the blast sent her toppling over with a yelp, wincing as she felt the skin on her palm and knee tear on the rough ground. She didn't lose grip on her wand though, and October was well accustomed to thinking quickly while in pain, after years of dancing en pointe. Targeting her opponent, she retaliated as she began pulling herself back up to her feet. "Stupefy!"
