Transfiguration 7:4

The classroom was divided in half, as it would be for the rest of the school year. Desks were on one side, an open space with a sole table was on the other. NEWTs were closing in, and Professor Styx wanted to make sure that her students were ready to go. She sat atop her desk, a stack of paper next to her on the wood. It would be an easy week for her, but not really for her students. She watched as they entered, waiting until they were all there before jumping down and addressing the class.

"Your NEWT exams are looming closer every day. From this week until the end of the term, we will be focusing on getting you ready to sit those exams. We are going to do a review worksheet every week, refreshing your brains on the theories and spells we have covered over the last seven years." She began to hand out the worksheet to the students. "Complete the sheets and turn them in before you go. If you wish to practice any of the spells in a practical format, you may do so over there." She motioned to the single table. "Please turn in the review before you would work on anything practical. Good luck!"

Moving back to her desk, she sat down on top and waited for anyone to need her.

Though Harper had found last week's lesson to be slightly uncomfortable, she'd also enjoyed the challenge of it, and she was looking forward to seeing what new spell they would learn today. The classroom was set up differently today, and she tried to guess what today's assignment would be. Maybe they would be conjuring furniture to fill up the empty half of the classroom?

The truth was incredibly disappointing. Harper knew NEWTs were a big deal, but she was surprised to learn that they would spend the rest of the semester revising for them. Had they really covered all the material they needed to know? Harper felt like there was still so much about transfiguration that she didn't know, that she wanted to know. She thought back to Defence Against the Dark Arts last week, when Professor Adelia had mentioned the Restricted Section. Harper had no interest in learning dark magic, but she wondered if there were more transfiguration texts in that section of the library. Maybe she could ask Professor Abberline for a permission slip.

In the meantime, she had a study guide to complete. Harper glanced over the worksheet, frowning slightly. It was incredibly easy, covering material they had learned back during their first three years. She quickly filled it out and handed it in. Once she was done, she decided to go to the empty half of the room and practice some conjuring spells. Harper started with a very ornate carved chair. She then conjured a matching desk. She wanted to practice some animate conjurations, but she doubted Professor Styx would be pleased to see wild animals running loose in the classroom. Besides, the lesson was almost over. Harper vanished her work before grabbing her stuff and heading out.

I would use the spell Gemelitiar.
6. What are your views on Transfiguration as punishment? What are the Ministry's views? What has replaced this practice?
I believe transfiguration should never be used as a punishment. It is inhumane to transfigure someone without their consent. The Ministry has similar views, although in the past, criminals used to be turned to stone. Now, criminals are sent to Azkaban.
7. How would you turn a beetle into a button and back?
I would use the spell Praepilatus and then untransfigure the button back into a beetle.
8. What spell would you use to turn an animal into a statue?
Statua
9. What spell turns a tortoise into a teapot?
Torte
10. What spell gives life to a inanimate statue, like a chess piece?
Animare

Ivy didn't particularly appreciate the immediate reminder of the NEWTs professor Styx gave them at the start of the lesson, but she supposed it made sense. They were going to be using these last few weeks of the semester to get ready for the NEWTs. Ivy completed the worksheet, then spent some time practicing spells after she turned it in. She spent the hour that way. Once they were dismissed, she left the classroom.

The Gryffindor teen entered the Transfiguration classroom, worrying about how quickly this semester was going. Soon it would be over then NEWTs would be right around the corner. Emmaline hoped she would be able to manage these exams. They would be the biggest, as well as last exams, of her educational career. The size of the exams and difficulty did not worry her as much as that they would be her last. There were still worries about the material of course, but she would take exams forever if she could.

Emmaline found her seat in the front row of the Transfiguration classroom. She set her wand on her desk, wondering which type of Transfiguration they would cover today. The human transfiguration had left her with an odd feeling in her stomach, but she had done it in the end, even if she quickly reversed it as soon as possible. Today they didn't seem to be doing any transfiguration. The professor announced that they would just be reviewing for NEWTs for the rest of the year. Emmaline appreciated the refresher. She put her wand away and unpacked her quill and ink. The professor gave each of them review questions which she started on right away.

Review Questions:

1. What are the seven types of Transfiguration?
-Inanimate to Inanimate: Nonliving to Nonliving
-Inanimate to Animate: Nonliving to Living
-Animate to Inanimate: Living to NonLiving
-Animate to Animate: Living to Living
-Switching: Switching two objects
-Conjuring: Making objects appear
-Vanishing: Making objects vanish (to where is up for debate).

2. Name the five areas of Transfiguration that are heavily regulated.
-Animagi
-Invisability
-Muggles and Muggle Items
-Time Travel
-Appariation

3. What is the spell that changes a spoon to a quill and back again?
The incantation is "Scriopea."

4. What spell turns a match to a needle?
The incantation is "Flammeus Tailora."

5. How would you turn a book into a jewelry box?
You would use the three tap method, visualizing the jewelry box, and use the incantation "Gemelitiar."

6. What are your views on Transfiguration as punishment? What are the Ministry's views? What has replaced this practice?
I do not believe that Transfiguration should be used as a punishment. I believe that it is cruel to do so. The Ministry used to use this method by transforming individuals into statues. They now have changed their minds and use the dementors to guard the wizarding jail.

7. How would you turn a beetle into a button and back?
You would use the three tap method, again visualizing the beetle. The incantation you would use is "Praepilatus."

8. What spell would you use to turn an animal into a statue?
The incantation would be "Statua."

9. What spell turns a tortoise into a teapot?
The incantation would be "Torte."

10. What spell gives life to a inanimate statue, like a chess piece?
The incantation would be "Animare."

Emmaline looked over her answers once more. She knew most of the answers after taking her OWLs a little while back. She had revised for ages for those, covering all the information from her first year. Now the NEWTs would be similar but with even more added information. It was definitely nice to have the review. She felt like she did rather well, although the professor would be the judge of that. Emmaline walked to the front of the room to hand in her review questions. Back at her desk, she gathered up her things and left the Transfiguration classroom.

Lesson four was already here and Rose still wasn’t prepared. It was good to see that Hufflepuff was doing so well. Maybe this could finally be the year that they would take the cup home. Rose was racking in the points and she knew she wasn’t the only one. She shared a bunch of classes with Essie. Not only that she knew a couple really eager first years. This year had to be it since she was graduating this year. She wanted to take the cup home at least once in her Hogwarts career. Rose had never cared about the house points she just did what peeked her interest. Sometimes that meant raking in house points. Rose shrugged and packed her bag quickly. No use in getting late and losing points to some stupid rule she didn’t know of yet.

Rose arrived at the transfiguration classroom and seated herself in the back. Hoping they would learn a new spell of something cool. Then she spotted the stack of paper and she knew that meant a review sheet. The questions weren’t that difficult and most of the things she had remembered from previous years. She quickly filled in the whole thing and then went on to practice some of the spells they might ask at the upcoming NEWT. Rose seriously felt nauseous thinking about the whole thing. When she was done practicing and she felt like she had done enough she left the classroom.

Review Questions:

1. What are the seven types of Transfiguration?
1 Inanimate to inanimate
2 Inanimate to animate
3 Vanishing,
4 Animate to inanimate,
5 Switching
6 Animate to animate
7 Conjuring

2. Name the five areas of Transfiguration that are heavily regulated.
Apparition, time travel, invisibility, anything that has something to do with muggles items and personal things and animagus things.

3. What is the spell that changes a spoon to a quill and back again?
That is Scriopea

4. What spell turns a match to a needle?
Flammeus Tailora, I think.

5. How would you turn a book into a jewelry box?
Gemelitiar is your best bet.

6. What are your views on Transfiguration as punishment? What are the Ministry's views? What has replaced this practice?

It should never be used as a punishment. Doing something wrong for the right reason is still wrong. I get why you would want to punish someone, but doing it by transfiguration is inhumane and wrong. Now evildoers are send to Azkaban.

7. How would you turn a beetle into a button and back?
First use Praepilatus and then untransfigure it back non verbally.

8. What spell would you use to turn an animal into a statue?
We use statua for that.

9. What spell turns a tortoise into a teapot?
That is Torte.

10. What spell gives life to a inanimate statue, like a chess piece?
Animare does that!

Brooke knew she should be ready for something new or different any time she walked into the transfiguration classroom. By sheer nature of the complex subject they were studying and how mercurial transfiguration or conjuring could be, really finding the classroom split up how it was honestly pretty tame. Still, Brooke hesitated as she saw the new room set up, hesitating for a moment about whether she should sit yet or not.

Thankfully, Professor Styx saved her from too much pondering by hopping to her feet and brandishing a worksheet at the class. In the past, Brooke had shifted from disparaging busy work like a review sheet to seeing it as an easy way to prove how much she'd mastered the material. Now, it was likely a much needed resource for her to make sure she hadn't somehow forgetting everything in the unyielding pressure of her NEWT year. Brooke took the worksheet with a nod of thanks, getting settled at her desk to fill it out, mentally telling herself it was practically like taking a mock NEWT and she should take it just as seriously, completing it with careful focus before handing it back in and working on a few conjuring and switching spells before the class was over.

Fenton had been having dreams about him turning into a donkey recently this past week. He always woke up with a huge grin on his face. It had been a ridiculous previous lesson, yet he had enjoyed it quite a bit. He hoped today would be just as enjoyable as he entered the Transfiguration classroom. The Gryffindor boy took a seat in the back of the room as the lesson began just a minute after. Today they were not learning anything new though. Instead they were reviewing for NEWTs for the rest of the semester. That was certainly a bummer. He had not really started to revise at all so maybe it was for the best, but he wasn't happy about it.

The professor handed out a review question sheet. It had a few questions that seemed to be mostly from the first couple of years. It was difficult to remember some of them, but with a lot of thought, Fenton was able to answer each question. He filled them out quickly before turning the review questions into the professor. That was all the lesson had planned for today. Fenton grabbed his things and left the Transfiguration classroom. Maybe he would not have to review for the rest of the year if they were reviewing in class.
