"Today we are going to start our first switching spell." Professor Summers started, a grin on his face as the students took their seats. He was super excited to be doing a practical lesson again this week, and hoped his students were just as excited. "Switching Spells are some of the most common types of transfiguration spells, and simultaneously some of the most complex to explain or understand. The initial concept seems simple enough; you take one item and simply switch it out for something else..." He shook his head, indicating that this was not the case. "But no. Once we dive deeper into the mystery of these spells, you will certainly find that they are awfully complex in their simplicity."

Aeon took two perfectly new quills from his desk, one black and one white. He placed them both upon his desk, moving things around to make some space. He placed the white one on the left and the black one on the far right. For once the class fell silent, and most of them stared up at him somewhat eagerly. After a pause, his wand swished downward toward the desk, though it aimed more at the middle than at any one particular quill. Not a sound escaped his lips. Silently, slowly, both quills began to change. The black one brightened, turning the color of coffee with milk, to gray, and then finally to white. The white quill gained dark brown tips for but a moment until the new color seeped slowly toward the center, effectively making a black quill. The two quills had completely switched places.

Professor Summers picked up the black one. The same black quill that had previously resided on the right side of his desk, now sat on the left. His small class still stared at him. He felt absolutely certain that at least a few of them were contemplating whether he had transfigured both quills to change to a different color, or if they had really switched. The difference between switches and transfiguration spells was most always subtle.

"Fact One," He started. "You will find that in most cases that when you cast a switching spell, there is no incantation." He fell silent for a moment to let the implications of that statement sink in.

"So when you cast a switching spell, you can no longer rely on correct wording. Your success will come solely from your ability to concentrate and focus not only on the objects being switched but also from your knowledge of the second object's whereabouts and location, which brings us to Fact Two."

Professor Summers opened the first drawer of his desk, and placed the black quill into the drawer and left the white one sitting on his desk.

"The two objects that I switched were close together and in plain sight; this does not always have to be the case. For a small example..." He swished his wand once more through the air impressively and the white quill turned back to black. From his drawer he removed the white one.

"I think I shall have you all try a simple switching spell yourselves in the remainder of the class. We will start with an inanimate object like the quill and work our way up from there."

He reached under his desk and pulled from it one pile of white quills, and another of black. "Okay guys! I want each of you to come up here and collect two quills each. Remember, visualization and wand movements only. By the end of class, I want to see each of your quills swapped colors. I will be watching for pranksters and cheaters. You have about forty minutes, so get started!"
Homework: Role-play attempting your very first switching spell. Keep in mind that you are attempting a type of magic that is far different than anything you've learned before. I imagine such an easy spell can be cast without too many problems, but the 'no incantation' thing might be a little strange if you've never tried it before.

Elliot knew they'd be going into more detail on switching spells today, taking his seat and wondering just how difficult the new magic might be as Professor Carter began the class. Watching the demonstration closely, Elliot supposed it was easier than normal transfiguration in a sense. Like Professor Summers had said, it required knowledge of the item they were switching, which was right in front of him, rather than having to envision what he was turning the target into like they had previously. Still, something about the lack of incantation made Elliot feel weirdly adrift. Even though he'd seen Professor Summers do it, it felt strange to imagine. How was he supposed to really express what he was trying to do without words to direct things? Elliot looked at his wand in his hand dubiously before eying the quills.

His first attempt was failure, Elliot simply swishing his wand downwards between the two quills, mind focused entirely on the fact that he wasn't saying anything. The movement felt incomplete and Elliot shook his head. All spellcasting before had felt like habit, but Elliot wondered if he could just trick his brain into replacing the need to say a spell with the image of the quills switching, maybe he could get the hang of it. It took a few attempts, and Elliot was starting to feel a bit silly waving his wand about silently, but finally, finally his quills swapped sides. Elliot slumped with relief, feeling like he'd begun going cross-eyed with how intently he'd been staring before wondering if maybe he could get one more switch in before class ended.

Aonghas walked into the dorm room, he had been doing a lot of quidditch over the last week, he’d been keen to just fill his hours with something else, to do more than he had been doing before. The hufflepuff was sure that come the next semester he was going to give up his position, sure it was something he’d been fighting for, and had worked for, but it wasn’t like he’d use it for much and he knew that there were likely others who would use the slot more than him, people who would enjoy it more than him, people who would use it, or discover a future career with quidditch, he felt a little protective over his spot because he had fought for it, but it felt a little silly too. He really wouldn’t use it, someone else would, someone would use it more than him, and they deserved it more. The hufflepuff got changed out of the quidditch gear and into the school uniform, using the time to also gather up the different bits and pieces he would need for the day in front of him. He was being kept busy, though he had expected as much as a fourth year. Next year and beyond would be increasingly difficult but at a certain point he knew he would stop bothering, it was more through than it would be worth in the end, since come a certain point it wouldn’t matter what he did, he’d always end up doing unnecessary work. He grabbed the last few things that he would need before heading out of the door.
Aonghas headed into the transfiguration classroom and took a seat in the class. He looked up towards the professor as the man got started, telling them that they would be doing a switching spell, after the build up over the last few weeks, he was pleased that they would be actually doing a spell. He was a little frustrated that they didn’t get straight to doing a spell but pulled his notes towards him and then held it lightly in his hand, watching as the professor made the quills switch. It was interesting to watch and he couldn’t wait to be able to try it himself. Even if there was no real need for him to be at school to learn this stuff, doing magic and spells were one of the few things he liked. He listened along with the facts and wrote a few things that the professor was saying about it down. The teen was glad when the professor then let them actually get started on it, it felt like too long a lecture before, but at least then he was able to get the two coloured quills and they were allowed to get started. He stared at them both, pointing his wand at them and thinking about them switching. It took a while but eventually he watched them switch colours. With that managed he felt pretty happy and then practiced the spell again, taking a little less long that time around and then the lesson was wrapped up. He packed up his things and left the room, he’d need to work on it, without an incantation is was always harder

Cyzarine was getting herself together for the day ahead of her, she had been left feeling pretty good about how the celebrations at valentines had gone, they had ended up pretty well for her. The gryffindor had expected them to, but of course she had been a bit fearful that it wouldn’t go nearly as well as it had, that she had perhaps misread a situation but of course that hadn’t been true. She wouldn’t have it imagined go extremely well, but she hadn’t stopped smiling since it and it was purely because of what had happened, there wasn’t anything else on the matter. She was smiling because of his actions, because of them. The girl was getting herself ready for the day ahead of her, keen to get herself together and face the day well, she didn’t want to be too distracted by the thoughts on her mind, after all, she knew that it would just be too much, she knew that it would be more annoying that anything for him, as well as her. The girl was getting her books and notes together, placing them all into her bag, making sure that she had everything where it needed to be. Once all ready she headed out the door to her first class.
Cyzarine walked into the transfiguration classroom and took her usual spot in the room. She pulled out her notes and books and placed them down in front of her. SHe was hopeful that they’d do a spell this lesson and was pretty pleased when the professor told them they would be doing a switching spell, they’d actually get to do one. She listened along as the professor gave them information about the switching spell and showed them how to do it, before they were eventually allowed to do it themselves. It did take a little bit of time before she was able to get to do the spell, but she understood why they had needed to go over everything, and why that was necessary. Eventually though she did have the two quill in front of her and was able to get started. She focused on them, finding it difficult to stay focused but, when she stopped for a moment just took the time to clear her mind and then tried again, this time she had far greater success and the two quills actually switched. She did the spell again, and managed even quicker. She didn’t get to practice again, but she figured she would get better and better at it if she just practiced loads. With that the professor wrapped up the lesson and they were dismissed.

The valentines dance had certainly gone differently to how Christian had expected, he had mostly gone to show his face and say hello to some familiar faces but instead he ended up making a new friend which was unexpected but never unwelcome. He made his way into Professor Summer's classroom for another Transfiguration lesson and he couldn't believe how the semester was going by so quickly. He took his seat and listened as Professor Summers talked to them about switching spells and the thing that stuck out the most was the lack of an incantation, it was nothing like any spell Christian had attempted before and he wasn't sure he'd be able to do it. Once he had listened to everything the professor had to say Christian took two quills, one of each colour and placed them on desk. It was a while before anything happened, Christian focused as best he could. picturing the movement he wanted in his mind and eventually he was successful. By the time he had done it the first time the lesson was over so he packed up and made his way out of the classroom.
